Does anybody know good software to use if you have a folder on your computer that you don't want anybody else to open? basically like a vault with a password, for protection both against someone who uses the computer or internet hacks.
I used to rar these kinda folders and winrar offers encrypted lock but I'm sick of raring and unraring every time I need access to the folders.

You can add or remove priviliges to every user by right clicking - properties on the folder icon.
This incase you are using Windows.

The closest I can come up with off the top of my head would be to use TrueCrypt on a virtual volume (see https://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=tutorial for setup details.)

Yeah, look into Truecrypt. It's more than sufficient to keep wifey out of your pr0n.
You'll just set up a large file, whatever size you need it to be, then it will be encrypted into a new volume. When you mount said volume, it'll show up as a new drive letter. Not only will nobody (and seriously, nobody) be able to get into it, it won't even look like a folder or anything suspect at all. It'll just be a big-ass file. There are other, more convoluted ways of stashing stuff with Truecrypt, but for quickness and ease of use, that's a fine option.

Thanks a lot fellas, I'm trying it right now.

"Mr. Metty, we noticed that TrueCrypt was installed on your laptop during a routine inspection. Would you mind telling us what you have that's encrypted before you board this flight from Yemen to the United States?"
Seriously, with you being a potential terrorist and all, having TrueCrypt installed on your laptop will throw up all kinds of red flags. Be mindful of that if they've ever bothered to inspect the thing.

Yep truecrypt. And learn how to create a hidden volume too.

I don't think TrueCrypt is that infamous!
And maybe the encrypted data is on my external hard drive :xbones

Yeah. make a hidden volume so if they make you open it, you open a dummy folder instead
