Jem today on his forum:
Hello all,
There’s not really an easy way to say this, so I’ll just say it. I’ve decided to suspend the Frost project with immediate effect. If this were somebody else’s band, I’d just say I was leaving, it would be so much easier, but it’s not so easy when you’ve created the band in the first place…
The reasons are many - I don’t feel comfortable any longer in the role of singer/front man/keyboard player/principle songwriter/principle cheque writer. Truth be told, I never have. It’s all got a bit out of hand from the gently self-mocking studio project I started for fun in a shed in East Sussex in May 2004 when I was young and happy and it was always sunny.
More than that though, trying to juggle two full time careers as I have over the last 7 years has been a tough ask and has ultimately become a price to high to pay in certain areas of my life. One of which is my health. I’ve been to a very dark place over the last 8 days and ended up in a pretty bad way. Although I’m now emerging out the other side (a stone lighter into the bargain), I have realised that I have some serious issues I must address. I’m no longer young, I’m no longer happy and the sun is no longer shining.
These issues have made me realise that life is sometimes about doing what you must do when the time comes regardless of what other people might want or expect of you. Some things are bigger than music or bands, expectation or disappointment. Figuratively speaking, I’ve now been given a yellow card and my priority now is to get myself back together before I get sent off for good.
So what now?
Nothing. I’m going to go to ground for a bit. Be private. Grow some veg. Get well.
And reflect. It’s been an amazing journey full of brilliant moments. Too many to list, I’m sorry it’s stopped like this, so abruptly, but I’ve been at my wits end lately and I’m no use to anybody in an urn.
I hope you’ll understand. Thank you for being brilliant.
Jem.

Oh wow this is terrible new. Get well Jem, we will miss your brilliance. :sadpanda:
-
Oh man...this sucks.
-
:sadpanda: Damn it, love this band...was great seeing them support DT, they were amazing. Get well soon Jem.
-
Well that kinda sucks. Both albums are kinda proof that you can write purely modern prog music and make it sound fresh and exciting rather than something we've heard before. Hope he gets well soon.
-
Dark month (or so) for modern progressive rock. Hope the man's okay. The poor fella sounds like he's having the week from hell. Whatever it is, couldn't happen to a nicer chap. Best wishes to the Jemminator.
Bad news for us, too... I adore Frost. They're my favourite modern band. Fingers crossed that when he sorts all these troubles out, business may resume. A similar thing happened after Milliontown. But there's no hurry. Jem comes first. And if it never happens, I'm just glad that Frost released two amazing albums, and went out on a high with the best live album I've got in my catalogue, plus the absolutely sublime Dividing Line. He's spoilt us already. Deserves to spoil himself, now, for sure.
Good luck, dude!
-
That's bad news indeed. I would have loved to see them live. Sad to see that this won't happen.
-
That's a shame. Only have Experiments in Mass Appeal, but it's a good album.
-
Tbh I don't think much of them but it's sad he's in such a bad place atm. Hope he recovers.
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

First Oceansize, now Frost*? :sadpanda:

I feared as much would happen... a real shame, too, considering how much hype was built around Frost*'s third album!
Maybe in a couple years once Jem has had some time to make his peace with life and feel like he can do Frost* music again. I hope all the best for him.
I wonder if this means John Mitchell is free, and if so, would he be willing to do a new Kino album with Pete Trewavas and John Beck (and hopefully Chris Maitland)? I can only hope that doing the Defence Of The Realm gigs might interest John to work with Pete again!
Either way, all the best for Jem, and I hope this year will be quite a good one for him. Now I wonder if we'll ever see/hear anything from the December shows he did with Frost* last year? Hmmm...
-Marc.
-
Man, the world of prog has been undergoing quite a bit of shock, seems MP leaving DT was only a prelude (whatever your opinion of MP may be).
-
Very sad, but I think Jem's a pretty cool guy, so I find it hard to hate him for DESTROYING THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC I SO DEARLY LOVE.
Just kidding. Sad news, but I wish him the best.
-
So much going on in this month. Seems this year is gonna be full of surprises
-
*shrugs* First album was great, second was mediocre.

Listen. I love both CD's but didn't Jem do this after the first CD and then came back to do another? I'm hoping the same happens.

Yeah absolutely. He did say "suspend" rather than "terminate". Hopefully a break will do him some good and we'll get some more music further down the line!
-
That's too bad. Hopefully he can get his shit together.
-
FOR FUCKS SAKE
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
So we won't get new Frost* album! :sadpanda:

Totally. It's very possible that it's not the end, but I'm too fond of Jem to want to be presumptuous about it. "Ahhh, he'll get it back together again - nothing to worry about." Fingers crossed that Frost* will return, though.
-
I didn't like the second album nearly as much as the first (except for the awesome "Dear Dead Days" and a couple of other pretty good songs), and I didn't think the first was as jaw-droppingly awesome as a lot of people did (although I do like it a lot), so I am fairly ambivalent about this. If they eventually return and make new music, I'll check it out, but if not, there are enough bands making good music these days to keep this music fan fat and sassy.
-
Sad, sad. But I'm also not terribly surprised given the previous post he made.
Man am I happy to have seen them live. And I can honestly say that it was one of the greatest concerts I have attended.

Was that the Philly show that they recorded for the live album?
-
Yeah, in Philly. Small venue full of geriatric prog fans (it was rather sad really), but the show continuously sent shiver down my spine, and I can't think of the last show that did that.
rumborak
-
That's great, the live discs are excellent, the band seemed to be sounding on top form that night! I've seen them twice, but one was a support slot and the other was their Christmas gig where they'd all clearly had a couple of drinks. :lol Both were still very good performances but had their weaknesses.
-
It's a shame. I love both Frost albums, kind of bummed about this.
-

Wtf? It's because you didn't go to a Frost* show, you went to RoSfest, a very nice progressive rock festival. NEARfest has the same general crowd and I'm not sure what it so sad about it.
-
I really only enjoyed Milliontown, but it's very sad news. I hope Jem finds his way out of the darkness.
On a positive side note, as someone mentioned, if this increases the chances of more Kino material, then this sadness will bring something good with it

The sad part was that it showed that prog is really a rather moribund genre. It was old fucks mostly who were ranting about how prog needs to have flutes and stuff.

I don't really see the big deal, you get people that closed-minded at all gigs/festivals.
-
True, but in regard to the earlier geriatric comment, that is probably referring to how many hardcore prog fans are aging males who want prog that sounds very 70ish, or something like that. I remember when I saw The Flower Kings in late '06, I made the observation to the friend who went with me that I had never seen so many middle-aged fat guys at a concert before. :lol

I think I'll do my second listen of EIMA today, thanks for the bump bro

Btw, Jem is writing a new Frost* track and there'll be one Christmas gig (John Mitchell, Craig Blundell and Nathan King). So not all hope is lost. :)

I'm just now starting to get into Frost*!

What is this good Frost* news doing in the "Bad Frost* News" thread?

This doesn't necessarily mean they're getting back together. It could just be a one-off, like The Hush Sound's new tour dates seem to be.
-
I still haven't heard The Dividing Line. Is there a way I can listen to it or buy the mp3?

Get the band's last release, the live album The Philadelphia Experiment, which features Nick D'Virgilio on drums! It's got a live set that covers both studio albums, and after the live show, on the 2nd disc is "The Dividing Line". I'm listening to the live set right now, actually!
Also, the "Intro" track is totally worth the price of the set alone! Okay, maybe not really, but it's hysterical and a great way to open a show!

He didn't release MCMLXXVII yet, did he?

New Frost* album!!
https://jemgodfrey.blogspot.com/2011/09/where-were-we.html
Quoting some paragraphs:
So with that in mind, once I've completed the Losers album (going very well by the way - dead pleased), I shall be simultaneously working on my "1 in 4" project as well as...and this is what I suspect you'll most want to hear ;)
...a third Frost* studio album!!
Yes, I'm dusting the old cow down again for another lap of the block. I know it's been an on/off thing for nearly 8 years concerning me and this shebang and I sincerely thank you (those of you who have managed to cling on to the rollercoaster ride of my relationship with this ever evolving troupe) for your patience, but I feel that after a full year off, I'm back in the zone and there's some more music to be made.
I did stress at the end of last year that it was only a hiatus by the way. See? I'm learning! :)
As yet I have no idea of the form, shape, personnel or sound of this new album, but it will definitely be Frost* shaped. I'll once again be making Frost* reports available online during the process and it'll no doubt be a bloody madhouse throughout, but that's Frost*. That's what it is.
I hope you'll indulge me once again, in return I aim to bring you the best Frost* album yet. This is my Jon Pertwee album in Dr Who parlance. However I shall try to avoid any Venusian Aikido during it's production.

News! Good news! :tup
https://jemgodfrey.blogspot.com/
Well. I wasn't expecting this day until January the 3rd, but it appears to have rocked up early. I've been invited for a spot of dinner with the record company next week up that London to discuss the new album and think of some ideas to really make this one the BIG one. Obviously I'm well up for that. I'm also going to meet my product manager, I've never had a product manager before so I'm looking forward to familiarising myself with this new concept. From my initial chats with Inside Out so far, it appears that they're very keen indeed to get behind this new release which can only be a good thing. I'm certainly keen, put it that way.
After that, I think we're off to see Devin Townsend. Something else I've not done before.
Additionally I've just asked Vitamin P to come up with a new logo for the band. The EIMA era is officially over now so it's time to give the old sow a bit of a makeover. This new look will make it's debut at our Christmas show, most likely in the form of a super duper limited edition T shirt. Perfect for the December weather.
So bizarrely, it appears that we're already underway. I have to say I'm rather excited, but that might just be the caffeine.
Happy New Year!

So, the fact that he is going to a Devy show opens the possibility to have him in the next album? Is that fair to the rest of the music out there if it happens?

This news has made me dust off my Frost* albums, all TWO of them, as well as their MAGNIFICENT LIVE ALBUM The Philadelphia Experiment, which is awesome from top to bottom! Probably one of my favorite live albums of the last decade!

Jem is so amusing.

Gettin' a bit frosty down here in Michigan. Time for my annual binge.
In other news, I cannot wait for this album. Really hoping a date is announced soon.
-
So, I remembered today that I hadn't checked out Jem's blog in ages. Seems he took it down?
https://jemgodfrey.blogspot.co.uk/
Am I looking in the wrong spot, or did Frost 3 just slip again?
-
Huh, so he did apparently. I mean he hadn't updated it since October...
That said, I don't think he dropped it. He just added a video to PlanetFrost a couple weeks ago. And about a week before that:

New blog entry! Jem just posted it not 15 minutes ago on FB!
Basically, the long of the short of it is:
Frost*'s next album will be a double album released in 2 parts (think BBT's EE, a recent example), the first part later this year, the 2nd in Spring '14.
In order to raise money for the making of the CD, they'll be selling a DVD they just made of a performance of several Frost* songs, to be on sale sometime soon I'm sure! (Sounds like The Tangent!)
And last but NOT least, there will be special guests on the album, including Jordan Rudess, who will guest on at least a 10 minute track called "Towerblock", slated for part 2!
GET EXCITED FOLKS... Frost* is gonna make a big comeback with this 2-part double album! I cannot wait!
-Marc.
-
Daaayumn, brotha.
And Jordan Rudess on their epic! OH MAH GERD.
-
I is excite!!
-
This is awesome!

Holy shit! A double album with a guest appearance from Jordan!! :omg: Can't wait!
-
You know, I ordered Milliontown a month or so ago at my local record store. It's on back-order, so I still haven't got it. :(
-
Just Amazon it.
-
I may have to. Knowing my luck, however, the day I order the CD, it'll show up at the record store and I'll have two copies (not necessarily a bad thing, especially if the album is as good as everyone says it is.)

It is. It's definitely that good. Keep one in the car, and one for the home. That way you'll never be without the epicness of Milliontown!
-Marc.

Awesome news :tup Jordan guest appearance :D :coolio
Although he does say near the end "So that's 2 whole and full fat new Frost albums on the way, the first of which, I hope, will be out this year with the next one in the Spring of '14. Alternatively both will be released in '14" Hope we don't have to wait a year or more for the first part!

Well the very last part is just in case, I assume, things pop up and his schedule gets too messy to finish the album by Summertime for a fall or winter release. I'd assume that Part 1 will see a release between Sept/Dec, with part 2 in March/May of next year.

Holy fucking piss, Batman.
I don't know if a live recording of Heartstrings will make the wait easier to take or harder. I'm hoping for easier. I say hoping, it's more of a wish, really.
-
I had the pleasure of seeing the lads live in December, and oh boy! The new tunes are pretty sweet! Can't wait to hear them on the proper dvd.
Also, Jem AND Jordan? Oh dear... I don't know if it's possible to survive that much epicness.

It sounds like I am going to be needing to check these guys out. I have heard much about them.

Frost* - Six Minutes in September, Part 1 (https://twitter.com/PlanetFrost/status/290479131152486400)
Weird title! Very different. Can see it being quite cool, though. Intriguing, for a conceptual piece. Wonder if the second one's going to have the same name.
-
Part 1? :caffeine:

I am so looking forward to the Frost* Reports that are sure to follow this news.

I've listened to it twice now, and I really quite enjoy it. The last five minutes of "Milliontown" are pure gold.
-
My favorite section of that song has got to be The Only Survivors. Such an uplifting harmony. That said, Snowman and Hyperventilate will always be my favorite songs. Good God, Hyperventilate. I really want to learn to play it (a slightly easier task for my being a drummer; I can't imagine what a nightmare it is for keyboardists to teach themselves).
Edit: By the way, the alleged first chord of Frost* 3 (5:05 on Sept 2012 Report) is positively orgasmic. It's so enticing.
-
My favorite section of that song has got to be The Only Survivors.
The bass groove in that section is HUGE. My favorite part are the three minutes following 19:20.

New blog from Jem Godfrey:
https://planetfrost.blogspot.co.uk/
Here's the news regarding the new releases:
The latest news is that we're releasing a new third album in place of Six Minutes In September. 6MIS is still in production and will absolutely and definitely be released, but logistically a new single album ties in nicely with the completion of our 3 album deal with InsideOut in precisely the same way an epic story told over 2 albums doesn't. In all honesty, we tried to do a deal, but couldn't agree terms on it. I didn't want to be in a situation where I owned one half of it, but not the other and neither did they.
I could cover all this in politically correct "otherspeak", but I'm old, I like a simple life and get tired of telling porkies at gigs about stuff like this. And besides, it's all perfectly amicable.
So my plan is to spend the rest of the year writing and demoing it up, then myself and the boys will decamp to Rockfield for a week to track the whole thing as a band after which I shall take it home to tweak it and mix it for a release next Summer. Have no fears that this will a "that'll do" record, it'll be a belter, I know this coz I've already got the first 10 minutes of it written.
Production on 6MIS will then continue from there so the good news is there will be a new Frost album every year for 3 years starting next year.
Additionally, I'm also going to re-record Milliontown and Experiments In Mass Appeal with Blunders and Nath replacing Andy and JJ's original parts as part of a remastered original version release with accompanying "making of" extended HD Frost reports.
So - DVD this year, a new album in 2014, a new album in 2015, a new album in 2016 and new versions of albums 1 and 2 in between.
To be honest, it's hard for me to get excited about all this. :( Recording studio albums to fulfill record company contracts usually ends badly (i.e. Love Beach). I'm sure this one will at least be decent, but still...
And re-recording the first two studio albums with the new members seems totally unnecessary. Was there a falling out between Godfrey and Jowitt and Edwards or something?
-
Yeah, not sure how to feel about this. :|
-
I see no problem at all, means we just need to wait a bit longer for the two parts of 6 Minutes, so if you want to ignore the in between album you can. Personally I think Jem comes up with a lot of great ideas quickly when the mood takes him, so even a somewhat rushed album could be great.
-

The waiting part isn't what bothers me; it's the fact that the album may be made with the wrong intentions. It could come off as halfhearted due to the record label contract. Still, I'll check it out with an open mind.
-
And then again it might be a "fuck it all, I pulling all the stops here" album that treads new ground. Often an outside constraint works wonders on an artist.
-
Weren't many major bands in the 70's contractually obliged to put out two albums a year? Seemed to work fine for them.
-
And then again it might be a "fuck it all, I pulling all the stops here" album that treads new ground. Often an outside constraint works wonders on an artist.
True. We will see!
-
My only regret is having to wait longer to hear the first note of September as shown in the latest Report.

My only "arrrgh!" is the timing - 6MiS's predecessor's going to be a year later than 6MiS was scheduled, and I'm sure there'll be further delays... but, new Frost*! And more albums than we'd previously anticipated! Excellent.

I guess I was being too cynical. I'm sure there will be some great material on the album.

Nope! DVD this year, album 2014.
New songs this year, though. https://www.planetfrost.com/ Heartstrings and Fathers, uploaded in demo form to the official website. Check 'em out!
ETA: I didn't care much for Heartstrings, but I am loving Fathers.
-
Found a fairly recent Frost* update.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edcad6cMheQ
Not really any news, but it's amusing.
-
'Tis a nice day for Cap'n Frost* today, as the rights to Milliontown now belongs to him again. It's now re-released, ever so slightly remixed and includes some bonus tracks of audio from the upcoming DVD, a special little Frost* report, new artwork and a remix of The Other Me by... well, me actually. :)
So go and get it at Bandcamp (https://www.frost.bandcamp.com/)
-
You're Espen Storo? I love that mix! It's in my iTunes top 50 (#29, to be exact).
One more thing: since the price is in British Pounds, how does that work for American purchases?
-
It should automatically convert, you won't even have to think about it. I buy things from Bandcamp all the time and never in my own currency. If you're wondering about the conversion, it'll be $9.22 USD.
I'll wait for a few people here to buy and discuss this before I do. I'm not sure that an ever so slight remix, a bonus live track and a bonus remix is enough to warrant a second purchase, just yet.
-
now I can buy The Dividing Line without getting the whole CD.
The Dividing Line is one of the best pieces of rock music ever created. It is addictively good. It might just be better than any single thing DT has put out. (ok, I would probably rate SDOIT as better, but SDOIT is 42 minutes long. Dividing Line is so much awesomeness crammed into 16 minutes. pure joy.)

Only in progressive rock can sixteen minutes worth of song be referred to as "crammed in."
Also, I am very disappointed that Fathers has disappeared from Soundcloud. But very pleased to see all the new Milliontown stuff. Had a listen earlier - do the effects at the start of The Other Me sound... different?
-
The last 3 1/2 minutes of TDL is awesomeness!
The only problem I have with the song is the middle section (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=64mG3NPho_g&t=452) is too much like the intro riff (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVbaImL2Cbc) to 39th Street Blues by Spock's Beard.
-
Just listening to Milliontown for the first time because of all the praise I've heard about it. It's beautiful.
-
Indeed. Not a single weak moment.

Thank you for the kind words. :)

I love the Espen Store Remix to The Other Me. Awesome release. :D
-
I'm surprised more hasn't been made of this.....
Why are the bass and drums for Milliontown and EIMA being re recorded? I love Andy Edwards drum part, particularly on EIMA. There must be a solid reason for doing this as I'm sure it won't necessarily be cheap to do.
Imagine if DT took the same approach with the parts the KM, DS and MP recorded!!! Of course that would be a tad silly, but I see little more merit in Jem Godfrey doing this.

The same reason why anything happens in the Frost*iverse. Because it's fun, and because they can.
-
So the double album is back:
https://www.planetfrost.com/post/60178920136/september-3rd-2013
-
Why do you do this to us, Jem? Why? I know he's free to do whatever he wants and do it at his own pace, but revamping the whole plan every few months has started to really bug me.
Ah well, if we actually get another Frost* album out of it, I'll be satisfied.

We'll probably get another Circus Maximus album before one from Frost*. :lol

Wow! I have my hopes up, don't crash them so quickly
In before someone mentions Tool

Dadgum, I was going to say Tool. :lol

Dadgum, I was going to say Tool. :lol
let's not get crazy
-
Oh hey guys Tool's album is coming out in early 2014. Before this.
-
Yeah, Tool usually keeps to their deadlines.
-
Since announcing that idea, I was quickly informed that The Tangent and Big Big Train were already doing something similar therefore we’re going to be really really daring and release the whole thing as a actual, proper double album all at the same time.
Jem, you make it sound like being like The Tangent and Big Big Train is a BAD thing...which it really isn't lol
Well, to avoid the similarities, I guess I can see what he's getting at. Good for him, though, and this means we'll get a double-dose of Frost*ie goodness when the album EVENTUALLY comes out.
-Marc.
-
Yeah, I think his point was he didn't want to seem like he was just jumping on the bandwagon - the only one or not at all.
-
Just discovered this band thanks to Lucidity recommending them in another thread. Wow. Good stuff. I hope their new album is still in the works!
-
Milliontown is pretty much a masterpiece. I never got into their second album, though, so I'm really hoping this new album sounds more like Milliontown than it does Experiments in Mass Appeal.
-
Milliontown is amazing.
-
Dammit, every time! This thread gets updated so infrequently that I figure if someone posts, it must mean someone has news! But NOOOO!
-
The latest news is that the DVD is almost finished and details should come "very soon".
-
This bump inspired me to finally check this out, so I fired up milliontown on spotify. I just got through the first track and it's sounding very promising! :tup
-
The DVD is out!

I've been listening to Milliontown again recently. Such a superb album. I want to hear more from this group.
-
Not bad... only €12, and €5 shipping to Canada. Can't really find any details on the content though? Where/when filmed. Anyone know.
-
Hmm, the content is in the link. The DVD was filmed live in the studio (forgot when exactly).
Track listing (DVD and CD):
Hyperventilate
Heartstrings
Black Light Machine
Dear Dead Days
Pocket Sun
Milliontown
Acoustic Session:
Lantern
Black Light Machine
Interview (DVD):
Jem Godfrey and John Mitchell
-
Oh, and the prices are in British Pounds, not Euro.

Yeah, I caught the track listing. I just didn't know if it was a concert DVD. Sounds like it's not. Thanks for pointing out Pounds vs Euros. That makes a bit of a difference.
-
Promo for the DVD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4DnAtjKbXk
-
Should I be disappointed that Black Light Machine is in the acoustic set?
I'll reserve judgement. It's a real show stopping flag ship tune though and it's so bombastic I'm not sure how it'll translate as an acoustic song.
-
Just watched the promo. I'm confused cos BLM on the clip is a full band performance.
Just noticed they perform it twice. DUH! I'm such a pleb at times.
-
No post in a long time. Has this been posted?
https://jemgodfrey.tumblr.com/post/96300262044/august-31st
Looks like, for all intents and purposes, Frost is dead. If you're writing a double album and then realize for yourself that you're no longer relevant, it might be time to call it a day.
Interesting small jab at DT in there too.
-
This again is a Jem issue. He's like that crazy girlfriend we keep sleeping with.
-
This again is a Jemima issue. He's like that crazy girlfriend we keep sleeping with.
No shit. How many times has he killed Frost*? I'll enjoy a new release, but I'm tired of his attention seeking drama. It's like he's unbalanced at some level.
And I'm not really sure where I hear teen-angst in DT's material?
-
Yeah, I don't even know what's up with Jem anymore. I pretty much don't expect another Frost* album in my lifetime.
-
Yeah, neither do I. He always seems to be enamored by his grandiose plans for a new album, but then he so ridiculously oversizes them (seriously, double album?) that he find himself utterly overwhelmed by the undertaking.
-
I figured he'd just be too busy rebuilding his studio for the 8th time or so.
-
Hell froze over, Jem is working on the album again:

*faints*
-
Look forward to new music.
When I first heard Black Light Machine, my first thought is this would be a great skating rink song. I thought about giving the local skate rink dj a copy.
-
I'm not getting my hopes up on this until we have a release date. I've made that mistake before
-
Same here. I'm believing it when I hold the album in my hands.
-
I'm not holding my breath...
but there's no harm in scooting forward a bit in my seat, right?
-
Ehhhhhhh!
It's going to be a good day.
-
ahhhhhhh Milliontown is still one of my favorite albums ever
The one after that is still great, too.

-
Same here. I'm believing it when I hold the album in my hands.
Ditto... Even a release date doesn't encourage me, because didn't 6 Minutes in September initially have a Sept-2014 target? Plus, Jem has dissolved the band on more than one occasion.
-

TRACKLIST INCLUDING A 30 MINUTE EPIC!!!
Still not holding my breath until I see a pre-order. Good news either way!

That was probably a completely different set of songs or ideas he had at the time. IIRC, it was originally a double album or a concept album or both, but this doesn't seem like either. If anything, this new album is structurally more like Milliontown, and if it sounds anything like it, I'll be very happy!
-Marc.
-
Sounds like good news, but I won't actually believe it until I have it.

*faints again*

I'm gonna go the other way an be very excited, this seems like it's gonna come through soon.

Jem said in a recent podcast (within the last month) that the sound of the album was more like Milliontown than Experiments in Mass Appeal. They're both great but I give the edge to Milliontown, so this makes me happy.

(Thanks ariich for directing me here. Tried searching but this thread didn't show up there.)
I've discovered Frost* recently, and this week just past I purchased Milliontown. The 26-minute title track ends with one of the most powerful instrumental breaks I've ever heard. A real energy and drive to proceedings. And their documentary videos are hilarious to watch as well. A real bunch of characters.
On the new album, there have been updates as recently as yesterday, and work seems to be going ahead with it. Also, nice to see quite a few DTFers are appreciative of this band, looking through this thread. :)
-
Didn't realise they had some gigs planned for next summer ;D
(https://i.imgur.com/g6qcaGj.jpg)
I'll hopefully get along to the Edinburgh show :metal
-
Think this is worth pointing out. From Frost* on Twitter:
We're finally going to release our first full album of new music since 2008 in May this year. Thank you all for being so very very patient.
Many probably will still be like "I'll believe it when I have it in my hands", but this feels very positive.
-
I bought a ticket for the Edinburgh show, now I need to plan my vacation around it!
-
Now that's devotion.
-
Scotland has been really high on my vacation list anyway for many years already, so it was kinda convenient. I mean, otherwise I would have just flown to London :p
-
I would so love to travel there and visit the small towns to soak up the locals.
-
Wow, I randomly happened to be on another Frost* binge after years of kinda forgetting about the band and searched if you guys had a thread on DTF. Lo and behold it was bumped only hours ago!
I took the time to read the abusive relationship everyone has endured with Jem since 2011...outside of obvious reasons, I really hope everyone gets their salvation in May like Jem says.
All of that aside, I think EIMA doesn't get enough love. Sure, it doesn't have the sprawling epic of Milliontown in it, but hot damn there isn't a single filler track on that record, each exemplifying the Frost* vibe perfectly - catchy, dynamic progressive music rooted in excellent piano melodies that just turns you into jelly.
It's too bad I can't make it out to the UK to catch them live. I'm sure it would be a Top 5 all-time show for me.
Anyway, here's to new Frost* music in 2016! :tup
-
Maybe I need to listen to Experiments in Mass Appeal again, because my impression of it has always been that it is a decent album, with a couple standout tracks, but nothing special, and quite a drop-off from the mostly-really good Milliontown.
-
Maybe I need to listen to Experiments in Mass Appeal again, because my impression of it has always been that it is a decent album, with a couple standout tracks, but nothing special, and quite a drop-off from the mostly-really good Milliontown.
That's how I feel about it aswell. Milliontown is just on another level completely.
-
Maybe I need to listen to Experiments in Mass Appeal again, because my impression of it has always been that it is a decent album, with a couple standout tracks, but nothing special, and quite a drop-off from the mostly-really good Milliontown.
I feel the same way.
-
:iagree:
-
Well, here's my thought process.
Milliontown was superb all the way through with its six songs including one sprawling epic, which is in itself 5 songs or so.
Experiments In Mass Appeal's short songs can definitely hold a candle to its comparative songs on Milliontown with Toys, Dear Dead Days, Wonderland, t/t, Welcome To Nowhere, Falling Down and Pocket Sun. (I just realized I essentially named every song on the album...)
While Milliontown's t/t gives it the nod, it's not fair to knock EIMA a peg simply because it's going up against a juggernaut of an album. I really just see it as a larger collection of the excellent shorter tracks from Milliontown.
-
I "knock" EIMA because the majority of the songs, for me, are pretty forgettable and have that "just kind of there" feeling.
And as much as I enjoy Milliontown, I don't genuflect to it like some seem to.
I mean, I like this band, but unlike a lot of their fans, I don't think they walk on prog water. :P
-
Personally, I think I enjoy EIMA over Milliontown. I know that the latter is the superior album, but the title track drags on too much for my liking. Hyperventilate is god-tier though.
-
I got Milliontown last year, and the thing about it, for me, at least, is that I love the first four songs and can not for the life of me get into the two long ones at the end. And then I look on a forum like this and it's usually the last two tracks that are praised as the high points. :lol
-
I think Milliontown crushes EIMA.
-
Been a big fan ever since Nekov sent them in a roulette... quite excited for a new release.
I'll stand with Base and Jingle and say that EIMA is at least on par with Milliontown for me and at times I like it more... Both are excellent for me though.
-
I think Milliontown crushes EIMA.
Yeah I'd agree with this. Every time I try to listen to EIMA I end up going back to Milliontown, I just think its a better overall album.
-
I much prefer EIMA to Milliontown.
-
I like Milliontown a little bit more but both are great albums
-
Both albums are fantastic, can't really choose between them.
-
Both albums are fantastic, can't really choose between them.
This, though I slightly lean towards Milliontown.
Beyond the two albums, I also enjoy some of the B-Sides that have been released, especially "The Dividing Line", which is a superb 16 minute epic. I kind of wish they'd put together a compilation album of all the B-sides and non-album tracks that have been released on various releases/online over the years, but have never been on proper albums.
Also, I'd love to have a GOOD quality version of their cover of "Fanfare For The Common Man".
-Marc.
-

That is the single best thing they've done. That might be in my top 10 tracks of all time by any band. I love both the albums too but as many have said I slightly favor Milliontown.
-
From Jem on Twitter, just now:
Lyrics now completed so I can finally reveal that the album is called "Falling Satellites".
-
No longer 6 Minutes in September?
-
That sounds better to me than 6 Minutes...
-
New Frost* website (https://frost.life/) has gone online. Falling Satellites is coming May 27th!
This link (https://www.insideoutmusic.com/newsdetailed.aspx?IdNews=16843&IdCompany=8) includes the tracklisting.

OMG FINALLY
-
I haven't followed any news or whatever about the progress of the album if there has been any, but I hope this is more in line with the first album as opposed to second.
-
Here's the track list for the limited edition with 2 bonus tracks.
1. First Day
2. Numbers
3. Towerblock
4. Signs
5. Lights Out
6. Heartstrings
7. Closer To The Sun
8. The Rage Against The Dying Of The Light Blues In 7/8
9. Nice Day For It
10. Hypoventilate
11. Last Day
12. Lantern
13. British Wintertime
Tracks 6-11 form a 32-minute suite, and just by titles alone, the ending must reflect or refer to the opening track. Tracks 12 and 13 are bonus tracks.
-Marc.
-
I'm curious about Hypoventilate, will it be as good as Hyperventilate? I wold guess it won't be as eclectic
-
I just hope it's not a blatant retread of what Hyperventilate is.
-
Vinyl/shirt combo ordered. :hat
-
Sad to see Lantern and Heartstrings on here since I've already heard those songs on the Rockfield Files.
Won't stop me from being incredibly hyped for this record though! :metal
-
Really looking forward to this one too! Hopefully it will be more in vein of Milliontown than EIMA.
-
I was firmly in the "I'll believe it when I see it" camp, and now that I have a review's copy, I can safely state that, yes, this actually exists.
I'll probably have a review for Nick in about a week or so.

It's really real? Mother fuck.

Just over six weeks until NEW FROST* (and Big Big Train)... I cannot wait for this album. Luckily, I'll have new Tiles and Haken to tide me over until the end of May.

Very Frosty indeed, I love it! Great tune!
-

Not bad at all.
-
sounds great, and it sets my expectations high, but I hope this was released because it's the most straightforward song. if they're all like this, it's a step below Experiments in Mass Appeal.
-
Heartstrings is not my favorite on the album, but it's in my top 3. The album is much closer to Experiments than Milliontown. Review will be forthcoming for WPaPU next week probably.
-
Jacked and pumped Mason!!
-
I haven't heard the new single yet, but "Heartstrings' is a song they've recorded and released before, at least 3-4 years ago, so it's a pretty old song by this point. I'm surprised more fans of Frost* don't already know about it. Since EIMA, Frost* (or perhaps just Jem) wrote and even released some single songs over the years, though they were on some fairly rare or hard-to-find releases, not EPs or LPs that major record labels would release.
Less than a month now for this (and the new BBT), and I'm glad I already have my pre-order made from BurningShed, though I missed out on the signed postcard from the band. Oh well...
-Marc.
-
As track 6 on the album, Heartstrings will be part 1 of the 32-minute suite mentioned in the announcement update. It'll be interesting to hear how it's developed in a longer form.
-
Pumped to see them in Edinburgh!!

Review:

-
from the review: "Falling Satellites is full of sublime moments..." it's hard to get more positive than that! great news.
-
Nice review and video with Jem along with the single. Did anyone else notice the iron and ironing board next to Jem's keyboard set up. I guess he does domestic duties while in the studio. Loved the song.
-
New song "Numbers" is up on Spotify. Good stuff!
-

Yep, I like it being so retro
-
I'm curious about Hypoventilate, will it be as good as Hyperventilate? I wold guess it won't be as eclectic
Not even close.
Temper your expectations on this album folks. If you only have a hundred or so albums, I'm sure this will sound great, but I'm finding this to be average at best. The exception for me is Signs, and that's more because the lyrics really speak to me more than it being a brilliant composition. Grade is a B if I'm being generous, B- after several listens. For reference: Milliontown A-, Experiments in Mass Appeal B-.
-
I'll definitely take something equal to Experiments in Mass Appeal. That has tons of great moments on it.
-
I'll definitely take something equal to Experiments in Mass Appeal. That has tons of great moments on it.
I'm finding it a slight notch down from EIMA, which I found a slight notch down from Milliontown. But I love both the first two, and the new one is still very strong (and has some great stuff).
Will hopefully get my review written soon.
-
On a scale of Affinity to Havoc how would you exactly rate how well the album stacks up to previous releases and expectations?
-
On a scale of Affinity to Havoc how would you exactly rate how well the album stacks up to previous releases and expectations?
I thought Affinity was amazing - as strong as the Mountain and better than the earlier albums, and also fresh with lots of new ideas.
I don't listen to Circus Maximum so feel unable to compare. I understand a lot of fans have been quite disappointed, but I don't know how much.
The new Frost* I definitely find less exciting than Affinity in relative terms, and it's not as fresh. Most of the album sounds like Frost*, basically. But there are some new ideas, and a lot of the album is really great. Definitely not a disappointment for me - probably the least good of the three, but only by a smidgen.
-
Review is done!
https://ladyobscure.com/albums/frost-falling-satellites/
(note: I was originally thinking of giving 4 stars, but the album grew on me)
-
great review! thanks for pumping me up for it. can't wait the last 10 days or so.
-
Hmmm, if this album is not as good as, or only as good as, Experiments in Mass Appeal, I might have to take a pass on it. I don't listen to this band that much anyway, and when I do, it is usually either the first album or Dear Dead Days. Nothing else from the 2nd album really stayed with me (although I remember a couple other songs being pretty good).
-
Great review, it was a good read! I'll definitely be checking this album out!
-
Just in time for the new album, my copy of Experiments in Mass Appeal arrived this morning. Looking forward to listening later. But particularly looking forward to watching the bonus DVD, with well over 3 hours of documentary footage. I didn't even know a single DVD could contain that much material!
Also, the cover is probably the blackest album cover in the entire history of album covers.
-
Today's the big day, Frosties! I'm loving Falling Satellites!
-
Listening through for the first time now....
Towerblock is freaking amazing.
-
Great album, a bit more pop influenced than the previous two, but in a very good way!
I think it would be an almost perfect prog pop album if it had ended in Hipoventilate, that is like an atmospheric epilogue for Nice Day for It... . By the way, I really love the run of songs from Heartstrings to Nice Day..., but I'm hearing it more like it was separate songs.
And, although Muse and Haken haved done that before, Towerblock is on another level of "prog dubstep metal". Great and very experimental song!
-
Towerblock is freaking amazing.
YES
-
Just picked this up. I'll give it a spin over the weekend.
-
First listen now :tup
-
Managed to snag what was apparently the only copy the local record store got in. :metal
They didn't even have any copies to put in the "New Releases" display at the front of the shop.
-
I listened to this once and it was kind of a snoozefest. Some good songs but overall nothing that really impressed me. I'm hoping it grows on me though.

It grew on me a little after 20 some spins, but that's what my review says - when Nick gets it up.

I listened to this once and it was kind of a snoozefest. Some good songs but overall nothing that really impressed me. I'm hoping it grows on me though.
Same here :'(
-
I think the album is brilliant! There is absolutely NO ONE out there that sounds as epic and PHWOOOOAAAAARG!!!! as Frost* do. Full-on prog but with the sensibility and hookiness of great pop music.
-
I've spun this a few times in-between majorly long bouts of spinning the new BBT (and a bit of Haken here and there), and I have to agree with the sentiments that this album falls somewhere between the band's first and second for me. It doesn't QUITE reach the highs of the debut, but still has a bit more of its flair than the second album did. I don't think I'll ever like any of their work more than their first album, but this is a great effort! There's a LOT of, ahem, I suppose "innovative" work on here, a lot of sound/production things that are really unique to Jem's writing and performance style. It'll be interesting to see how they pull of something like "Towerblock" in a live setting without it sounding too much like a recording of samples and triggers.
This will one definitely grow on me, and will likely sit near the bottom of the Top 10 albums of the year, but they've got some hefty competition.
-Marc.
-
I hopes for this album were that it'd have at least 2 songs I really like, and after a couple listen it meets those requirements with exactly 2 songs I love.
That's success enough in my book.
-
I'm digging it. Too early to say where it stands but I love the modern sounds from the album.
It's like all these patches he uses for pop music then prog it a bit and it's very cool to hear it.
-
Here is Mason's review of the new album: https://wpapu.com/review-frost-falling-satellites/
-
In the closing instrumental of Black Light Machine, there are "glitchy" interludes between the solos. In Towerblock, they go all-out on this glitchy front. The breakdown at the end is so brilliantly bizarre! Just absolutely nuts!
Numbers has really grown on me since the album came out. I heard it once or twice on Spotify, but it didn't pull as much as Heartstrings did (no pun intended). But now I love it! Although I must say that the chorus does remind me a bit of Something Very Strange by Spock's Beard ("Look up to the sky my brother...")
-
Same here, it's slowly growing on me. First I was slightly disappointed, but I think one has to first get a handle on the overwhelming wall of sound. Every listen has been more enjoyable than the last so far.
-
Yup. It gets better with every listen.
-
This album has really grown on me over the weeks. Signs is a frequent earworm of mine, especially the brilliant middle section and its heavy riff that wouldn't sound out of place on a Steven Wilson album. And I really love the poppiness of some of the tracks, especially Lights Out and Closer To The Sun. In fact, in an alternate universe, the latter would be this year's chilled-out Ibiza anthem. Idk. It just transports me to the beach.
-
Just listened to it on youtube for the first time. Like others have said, really hard to digest in one listen. I didn't like Numbers at all, but the rest of the album seemed to be pretty good, I felt like they broke some new ground but their overall sound is definitely still there. Only other complaint would be that the pacing seems weird toward the end of the album, particularly those last 3 tracks. Didn't have a problem with any of them musically, just seemed like the momentum of the album sort of fell off after Hypoventilate.
Anyway, whatever. Pretty solid so far, I'll listen to it again when I have the chance.
-J
-
Finally got this album. Amazingly found it at a Hastings in town.
I love the electronic elements in Lights Out and Towerblock. Only on my 2ND listen and forgot how good Closer TO ThE Sun is.
Pretty good album and one I needed and it's the exact music I've been into.
Got to Lantern...this song would sound way way way cool with a female singer.

How much interest would there be in a Frost* survivor? I'm talking possibly in a few weeks' time, but I'm trying to gauge interest and if it's worth doing it.
-
How much interest would there be in a Frost* tournament over at Polls & Survivors? I'm talking possibly in a few weeks' time, but I'm trying to gauge interest and if it's worth doing it. If I say that it won't be a traditional survivor, and you'll be voting for your favourites instead, would that sway you?
I'd be game for it, but I'll need to spin their 3 albums a lot in the run up to it. Would you also be including their non-album tracks, like "The Dividing Line", "The Forget You Song", "Raining In My Heart", "Here Is The News", and "Wedding Day"? I'm sure not every casual Frost* fan has even heard any of these, mostly because they weren't available on the studio albums, but the die-hards that seek them out have them in their libraries and definitely do listen to them. (And of course, there's also that cover of ELP's "Fanfare For The Common Man"...)
As for the format, I've never been too keen on the "vote for your favorites" elimination process, if only because the last couple rounds become less interesting because you're trying to pick songs that aren't as well-liked by the general audience, since the liked ones are already ranked. In the traditional survivor set-up, there's a lot of excitement and tension built up as the last couple of songs, and arguably the more popular ones, battle it out for the top spots. So in short, I'd only be interested in a traditional survivor for Frost*.
-Marc.
-
I've only heard of The Dividing Line and The Forget You Song. I thought that was it for non-album songs.

In my defense, there was no way any of us could have seen this coming, what with eight years of nothing but aborted new album plans. But holy shit, worth the fuckin' wait.

Hahaha right after reading this. I got onto Facebook and saw they posted about the next album will not take 8 years.
-
I'm extremely pleased with this album. I remember a blog post Jem wrote some while back about how the kids aren't listening to prog anymore, and how he felt reluctant to put out anything new because nobody would take to it. It really sounds on this album like Jem did some soul-searching and found a sound that was fresh while staying uniquely Frost*. Maybe the wait was worth it after all.
-
Just a heads-up for those who don't frequent the Polls & Survivors board often that a Frost* Survivor will be starting later this week, with the Milliontown survivor. Hope to see you there!

The first round of the Frost* Survivor is underway! (https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=48503.0) This round is running for 48 hours to give people a chance to see it and vote. Enjoy!

Black Light Machine just came on in my playlist.
Face. Melt.
-
You know, it took quite a while, but Falling Satellites has finally grown on me. It's really a great album, or at the very least, better than I thought it was upon first listening to it.
-
Black Light Machine just came on in my playlist.
Face. Melt.
Still their best song. It's incredibly indulgent but JUST. SO. DAMN. GOOD.
-
The solo gives me goosebumps all the time.
-
I think what makes the song so great is that you're halfway through and think "wow, cool song. Nice climax and everything". And then BAM!, it goes into a tantric orgasm.
-
I'm air guitar soloing that song in the car on my steering wheel and I don't care who sees me.

Best description of it. :lol

We have a skate ring in town and I thought about suggesting the dj turn down the lights and put this song on. I think people would get into skating to the song.

It is fantastic, still probably my second favorite tune of theirs just behind the title track on that record.
-
So, I haven't listened to Frost* in years but I just dug up the two albums I have (the first two) and also I ordered the new one on vinyl. Looking forward to it! Can you guys tell me if the sound on the new one is a little more "organic"? That was always the problem for me, Frost* always sounded very "cold" to me. But I have always loved Hyperventilate.
-
Their newest album sounds just as "cold" as the first two imo. But it's still a great album.
Also Black Light Machine. :2metal:
-
Milliontown is by far my favorite album of theirs. There are a few nice sections on the last one too, but for me what really stuck out on Milliontown, as this usually does for me with bands, are the instrumental sections. There's some fantastic stuff on there, and not just in Hyperventilate. Wish they'd make another album similar to it!
-

Wow! Amazing song. That was the highlight of my weekend :tup (which already was pretty good)
Thanks!

So my Falling Satellites Vinyl finally arrived and I've listened to it twice now, plus once to the CD in my car. I've really started to like the electronic sound they have. Also in the last two years or so I've come to like some actual pop music. And many times while listening to FS I thought, man this is pop (Lights Out) but damn good pop with a lot of prog passages and played pretty wickedly (<-- that word looks weird I hope you get what I mean).
Does anyone know why Dec Burke is not part of the band anymore? Not that I really miss him, I never disliked the vocals by Jem and John, plus they have become way better since 10 years ago.

Well I have listened to the CD on a completely different sound system than the vinyl but overall I'd say the vinyl sounds pretty good. Although it's a little weird that on one song (I think the first bonus track) the band put vinyl-noises on the song as a gimmick. When listening to the CD it's a cool effect but when you listen to it on actual vinyl you get the feeling there's something wrong with your copy :D although it's obviously supposed to be like that.
-
It's been about six months since I first listened to Falling Satellites and I gotta say: this feels like the rightful successor to Milliontown rather than EIMA. Well, anyway.
-
I'm listening to Falling Satellites after a long while. Oh man, I forgot how cool this record was! :metal
-
Has anyone noticed the amount of pictures the band has been posting on Facebook today? I think something is up... I could imagine they are about to announce a new album.
-

Well, there's a new instagram account where Jem has been posting construction pictures of his new studio.
I think the latest news is that this year will see the release of a show filmed and recorded last fall. All the while Jem will be writing material for a new studio album that should be released next year, but with him you never know. That being said I think with this latest album cycle Jem has finally come to a good place regarding Frost*. It's still a hobby and not his day job but I suspect he won't disband it this time.
-
I think he said something about releasing an EP this year.
-
Petition to change the title of this thread to "Official Frost* Thread" or something similar? Every time I see "Frost* news" pop up, I think there is legit, real news to be found, but it's just rumors and hearsay. :lol Not that I don't appreciate that, but it's a bit misleading. I was so excited seeing this thread pop up earlier today...ah well.
A new album or EP would be nice. Falling Satellites is a great album and I hope Jem keeps up with this band. A new album every 3 or so years would be nice if he can make it happen! An actual live home video concert would be good too. One of my favorite live albums in the last ten years was 2010's The Philadelphia Experiment, which is a fun and exciting live album from them, and having NDV on drums is pretty awesome as well.
I still wish we had SOMETHING from the Defence Of The Realm, from the 2010 Summer's End festival. The setlist for that show looks amazing!

Official Frost*, the band masterminded by producer, keyboard player & vocalist Jem Godfrey, has announced that they have re-signed with long-time label partner InsideOutMusic (who this year celebrate their 25th anniversary).
This new deal will encompass several forthcoming releases, including 2 new studio albums, a live album (filmed at 2017’s sold out show in London), as well as reissues of the bands back catalogue. Jem had this to say: “InsideOut have been a long suffering supporter of Frost*. Unwaveringly supportive even when I was lobbing as many toys as I could find out of my pram. As time has passed, I’ve grown up and come to realise what a luxury it is to have a record company of this calibre covering your back. Many bands don’t have that luxury so I’m absolutely raring to go with the new album and the one beyond that.”
InsideOutMusic label-head Thomas Waber adds: "I am really pleased that we managed to extend our partnership with Frost* mastermind Jem Godfrey. His unpredictable nature and humour is a breath of fresh air in this genre and provides for some of the best music we have released on the label. Let's see what mischief we can come up with in the years to come!"
More news on these forthcoming releases will be released in the coming months.
Giggity on the live album.

+1 to this, except that jingly posted some actual news just now; cool stuff indeed!
-
Wow, that really sounds like Jem will be committing a lot more time to this band and 2 new albums? I'm excited right now even if it takes 2 years to get the first one of them.
-
Color me excited. I loved Falling Satellites, so more Frost* is certainly good news!
-
Not just one but TWO albums?! Awesome. Just heard Milliontown a few months ago and it blew my freaking mind so I'm all over these when they come out.
-
He said on twitter not so long ago that he was working on an EP and a new studio album, maybe these are the two releases?

Does it mean we'll get Philadelphia Experiment available again.

I guess you missed out on last year's re-issue of it?
https://progreport.com/frost-reissue-live-album-philadelphia-experiment/
I checked The Merch Desk and they're not carrying Frost* stuff anymore, so I guess it came and went, but yeah, it was re-issued after being initially released back in 2010. The album is still available as a digital download from their bandcamp site, so if you don't mind buying digitally, that's an option.
As for the new news, I'm excited for 2 more Frost* albums and a live release as well. The Philadelphia Experiment is one of my favorite live albums of all time!

I remember that. I didn't have funds at the time. I think it sold out by the time I got the chance, or I just totally forgot about it. I didn't even know Frost* has a bandcamp.

BUMP!
So Frost has this going on at the end of the month:
http://www.sweetwaterstudios.com/frost-recording-master-class/
And then they are doing a show in Fort Wayne on February 2nd.
https://www.facebook.com/events/133472124224192/
Nick D'Virgilio will be sitting in on drums for both events due to Craig Blundell's commitments with Steven Wilson. I will be at the show for sure.

So Frost has this going on at the end of January at Sweetwater Sound:
http://www.sweetwaterstudios.com/frost-recording-master-class/
Nick D'Virgilio will be filling in for Craig Blundell since he'll be touring with Steven Wilson.
Also, they are doing a warm up gig in Fort Wayne on February 2nd to get ready for some festival gigs and Cruise to the Edge. So, if you live in the Midwest and have always wanted to see Frost live, this is your chance!

It is, but that's where Sweetwater HQ is, so makes sense.
There are farms across the street from our location, so it sometimes feels like we are in the middle of nowhere. ;)
Although, on the positive side, one could say Fort Wayne is in the middle of everywhere. If you were to draw a circle with a 250 mile radius and Fort Wayne in the middle, you'd hit Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Louisville, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Grand Rapids, etc. So, there's a lot of stuff to get to if you want to drive a little. All in all, it's pretty cool.
-
I'm tempted to go to this gig since Frost is one of those bands that, unless they support a bigger act like DT or SW, they may never tour the states ever. I know they have done Rosfest I believe but it usually never lines up with my work schedule. Very tempting...
-

Cool! Sweetwater pretty much always is my go-to for any gear nowadays. I used to always order from MusiciansFriend, but Sweetwater's prices are just as good, you guys have a better selection of brands, and your customer service is waaaaaaay better. Great company.

For my most recent order (bulking up my home studio) Bryan Brubaker.

So Frost* was on point at their Cruise to the Edge warm up show in Fort Wayne last night. No spoilers, but I will say Nick D'Virgilio played like he's been in the band the whole time. Totally dug it, and if anyone is going on Cruise to the Edge this week, I highly recommend seeing their set. You won't be disappointed.

I recently bought the Falling Satellites CD after coming across one of their videos on youtube and I had honestly forgotten how awesome this album is. I like it's different enough from the previous two to be its own thing. I was looking at the comments on this thread when the album came out and if I hadn't read about the 30 min track or movement or whatever you want to call it, I would've never known that tracks 6-11 are all connected. The booklet has no mention of them being connected. The only slight clue is that tracks 6-11 are in a smaller font than the rest.
Does the 6 song suite have a name?

I didn’t know about that either! Anyone kind enough to explain?
-
Found some info from ariich's review, the suite is called Sunlight.
https://ladyobscure.com/albums/frost-falling-satellites/ (https://ladyobscure.com/albums/frost-falling-satellites/)
The rest of the album’s songs form a suite called Sunlight – the songs mostly don’t segue directly from one to the other, but they are connected by some lyrical and musical ideas.
-
Yup. It's called Sunlight. All the tracks run into each other without a pause, and the predominantly-instrumental Nice Day for It reprises both instrumental and vocal themes from Heartstrings. It also has a callback to the opening track on the entire album, First Day.
Meanwhile, in Frost*-related news, John Mitchell's Lonely Robot has announced their third album, Under Stars, will be released on 26th April. I loved The Big Dream (still do), so this is a definite purchase for me.
-
Lonely Robot, the project masterminded by producer, guitarist and singer/songwriter John Mitchell (Kino, Frost*, Arena, It Bites), have announced the release of ‘Under Stars’ for the 26th April 2019.
John comments: “It is the final part in the astronaut trilogy, and was recorded over an intensive month and a half period. This time I wanted to reference my love of 80’s synthwave pop a little more, so beware the 808! The title is derived from belief that we as humans spend far too much time not noticing the beauty around us and far too much time tethered to technology.”
The album once again features drums by long-time collaborator Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson), plus bass contributions from Steve Vantsis (Fish), with all other instrumentation on the album delivered by Mitchell himself.
‘Under Stars’ will be released as a limited edition digipak CD (featuring 3 bonus tracks), gatefold 2LP + CD & as digital album.
The track-listing is as follows:
1. Terminal Earth
2. Ancient Ascendant
3. Icarus
4. Under Stars
5. Authorship Of Our Lives
6. The Signal
7. The Only Time I Don’t Belong Is Now
8. When Gravity Fails
9. How Bright Is The Sun?
10. Inside This Machine
11. An Ending
12. How Bright Is The Sun? (Cosmic Mix)* CD / digital bonus track
13. Under Stars (Cosmic Mix)* CD / digital bonus track
14. Lonely Robot – Chapter One – Airlock* CD / digital bonus track

From the Frost* Facebook page-
Hello all,
With much sadness I have to announce that Craig is leaving our Frostie world forthwith. He has bust his derriere off over the last decade turning himself into one of the world’s most in demand drummers, it has been an absolutely stellar trajectory and it’s a testament to his talent, determination, dedication and sheer hard bloody graft that he now finds himself where he is - playing with some of the biggest names in rock to hundreds of thousands of people all over the planet every year.
However, as with all actions there is a reaction and as such the demands on his time now mean that it has become too difficult to get our schedules to marry often enough to bear much musical fruit. We haven’t been able to gig much over the last two years for example and I know that’s been a source of frustration for our fans. To be absolutely clear, that’s not a criticism of Craig, merely the state of affairs up till now. We knew it and we went with it because we’re a band of brothers and because…Craig Blundell.
But, the next couple of years promise to be busy ones in Frost*World™ and we need to be firing on all cylinders accordingly. Craig totally gets that and, absolutely with the best interests of the band at heart, has decided to step aside so that we have the greatest chance to maximise all that’s to come.
Rest assured we are all still best of mates and he’ll always have a key to the door as nobody ever really leaves Frost* completely. Partly because everyone’s personality somehow remains embedded in our weird hive mind, but mainly because I have everyone's bank details and they all very kindly pay me a small consideration each month to not publish them on the dark web.
So I just want to publicly thank dear Blunders for everything he’s contributed in the last 10 years - all the energy, the creativity, the solos and for all the laughter. Especially the laughter. Thank you mate, we love you and we’ll miss you.
See you all out there soon. Ish…
Jem
Sad news, but it sounds like good things may be coming from Jem in the next couple of years.
-Marc.

Sad to see Craig leave, but if this means Frost* will be much more active now, then it’s good news.
EDIT: One of the comments on Twitter says “Mike Portnoy has a day off in February 2020” :rollin
-
Sad to see Craig go. I guess he is getting busy with Hackett touring and potentially SW touring during the next 2-3 yeas.

:lol
I wonder who will replace him though. I'm not sure how busy NDV is with his solo record and Big Big Train, but he has played with them before. So maybe they will call him again?
-
I've come to appreciate him a lot lately and it is sad that he is leaving the band, but as you are all pointing out, if this means we'll get more frost* it is for the better. And also, that might be one of the best posts about someone leaving a band. It truly feels like there is no bad blood whatsoever :)
-
EDIT: One of the comments on Twitter says “Mike Portnoy has a day off in February 2020” :rollin
I know this tweet is probably meant in jest, but please no.
I have to say, I was pretty gutted with how I found out about Blunders leaving. Jem tweeted an old Frost* Report, and I watched it. When I went back onto Twitter after that, a news item about him leaving was the next tweet. Bit of a hammer blow, tbh. All the best to him.
-
Honestly, what would be wrong with MP joining them full time? I know he's a strong personality and all, but no one can argue with what he'd bring to the table.

His utterly disgraceful treatment of Dream Theater, particularly during the SoA period. I don't want him ruining another of my favourite bands.
-
So, Jem and John are in the studio writing and recording material for the new album. Color me excited. :metal
-
And they've been putting up daily podcasts on their Soundcloud page, where they basically talk about what they've done that day, and shoot the breeze in the inimitable way that only Messrs Mitchell and Godfrey can.
They also put up two songs which will presumably be on the upcoming Others EP. https://soundcloud.com/user-428935264 (https://soundcloud.com/user-428935264)

Hello all! I don’t know about where any of you live, but I just woke up to the first Frost* of the season, and as has been tradition since winter 2007 when I bought Milliontown, I’m inaugurating the occasion with some Frosty* delights!
-
Well, I live in the southern hemisphere and we are getting into Spring right now, but it is always a good day to listen to Milliontown. I'll give it a listen later today

An update from Jem posted 10 minutes ago:
"Good evening Bacefook. Jem here, I hope you're doing ok as this bizarre alternative universe Micheal Chrichton style reality continues to inexplicably unfold... Quick Frost update for what it's worth at the moment which isn't very much I know, but every little bit of positive news helps I hope.
The album's coming along very nicely. Drum legend Pat Mastelotto has joined us for a song or two... he's playing on the songs "Repeat To Fade" and "Skywards". I have the drums for the former and they are gigantic. I had goosebumps listening to it.
The writing is also continuing. Today I wrote a song called "The Boy Who Stood Still". This follows a song I wrote at the weekend called "Antidon't" so we're getting a good run of momentum at the moment.
John and Nath are sending me their parts to various songs as the days go by.
And, most positively of all, the EP "Others" will be released on June 5. There'll be a lot of noise about it over the next 72 hours on our various channels, but I thought I'd jump the gun tonight because I owe this place a bit of love.
More news as we get it. Keep yourselves safe and I'll see you back here soon!
Onwards!
Jem"
Woohoo, finally the EP will come out!
-Marc.
-
I just remembered that EP a few days ago and was wondering if I had missed its release. It was announced so long ago. :lol
-
Yeah, Jem and John post a lot on twitter. I love that they are making the best out of the quarantine. Having Pat in there, even if it's just two songs, is going to be amazing!
-
I was just listening to Frost* again yesterday after a while, so these are very good news, I'm ready :metal :metal :metal
-
Pity that Craig Blundell is not a part of Frost* anymore. He is seriously amazing (btw, is he still in Hackett's band?).
BUT Pat is a fantastic drummer. I'm excited to hear what he'll add to the songs.
-
My word, June's looking like the best month for album releases for a long time, even with the delay of Steven Wilson's album.
-
Another update from Jem:
"Ey up...to confirm then...our new EP "Others" will be released digitally on June 5 and will be released as part of the limited “13 Winters” anthology-artbook physically later this year. More news on it all shortly..
To celebrate, I'm going to release a series of 1 minute long Frost*verts every week day until I run out of talent and/or material.
https://youtu.be/DxXHgeyb6do
"
Gotta love his sense of humor!
-Marc.
-
Hopefully EIMA get remixed and remastered. It's a great album but I can't stand the way it was compressed as fuck. Very harsh and a lot of clipping even at low volumes.
Has there been any news on what's going to be in the artbook?
-
Based on previous tweets and stuff, I have a feeling everything in the box has been remixed/remastered.

With Official Frost*s latest album, “Falling Satellites”, dating back to 2016, it was about time, mastermind Jem Godfrey teamed up with Nathan King and John Mitchell to continue forging daring and dynamic progressive music.
Completed already back in 2019, FROST* now announce the release of the stunning 32 minutes long “Others – EP”. Jem Godfrey states:
“Others” is a 6 track EP containing 6 songs that were written at the time of the “Falling Satellites” album. Initially the idea was that “Falling Satellites” would be a double album, but it felt more focused and concise as a single album by the time we’d finished making it, so these half completed songs were put to one side. Now finished and mixed, they are ready to see the light of day!”
The EP will be released digitally on June 5, 2020 and will be released as part of the limited “13 Winters” anthology-artbook physically later this year.
A first track from the “Others – EP” will be released on May 22!
The track-list is below:
1. Fathers
2. Clouda
3. Exhibit A
4. Fathom
5. Eat
6. Drown
Not much longer now!
-Marc.
-
Do we know what this 13 Winters collection is going to be? Is it going to be a collection of all their studio material or something? I'm just getting into this band and so far I only have Falling Satellites, so it'd be nice to get something like that if so.
-
wasn’t there supposed to be a live release too at some point? Dingwalls, whatever happened to that?

The Frost* digital EP, Others, is now available for pre-order!

What an interesting song. It has that unmistakable Frost* sound, but at the same time is quite different to what I'm used to hearing from them. I like that they are exploring new musical spaces.
-
That was cool! Honestly, I didn't enjoy Falling Satellites very much, so wasn't sure what to expect with the new music, but that was a good start. :tup
-
Absolutely loved it.
-
Very interesting! Sounds a bit different, but it's still clearly Frost*. Can't believe we're finally getting new music after 4 years (when I discovered them).

I was thinking the same thing, with a bit of NIN's Starfuckers, Inc. in there as well.
-
Anyone check out the EP yet? Very interesting stuff so far. Feels like it’s mostly a Jem solo effort, but it’s very interesting.
-
I listened to it once, it didn't catch me. But Falling Satellites didn't either at first listen back then and now I love it.
I wonder who plays drums on the EP.
-
I listened to it once. I can see why these did not make it into the album. They sound very much like Falling Satellites, but at the same time are very different.
-
I really like the EP. Exhibit A is :2metal:
-
I really like the EP. Exhibit A is :2metal:
Yeah seriously, it's like a mini version of The Dividing Line, both musically and conceptually. :metal
I'm also absolutely loving the grooooooove in Eat.
All round a really cool EP. I think I'm actually digging it slightly more than Falling Satellites so far.
-
I listened to it once, it didn't catch me. But Falling Satellites didn't either at first listen back then and now I love it.
I wonder who plays drums on the EP.
I'm not sure either but Jem has been working on this for so long I suppose it's most likely Craig Blundell
-
Finally could listen to it today, and I like it, but it needs more spins to form a proper opinion on it. I agree that Exhibit A is :metal and it's currently my favorite, but it was the single, so I was already familiar with it before.

Jem said on Facebook or Twitter that Pat Mastelotto recorded 2 tracks, but he didn’t tell which tracks. I think 2 of them has only eletronic drums and the other 2 must be Craig. I’m still curious which tracks.
Very good EP, it’s more on the eletronic/experimental side of Falling Satellites.

Pre-ordered. I just got this for The Philadelphia Edperiment., Missed my chance at getting it.
-
Oh yeah, I had meant to post about 13 Winters when I got my BurningShed email about it last week. Oops. I'm kind of saddened that they couldn't get their version of "Fanfare For The Common Man" on the B-Sides disc. I'd love to get a higher quality version of it.
I'm sure I'll order this one eventually, despite already owning most of this music.
Of course, the most exciting news is the new album next spring! Cannot wait for that one!
-Marc.
-
This is exactly what I've been waiting for. Been wanting to get into Frost* for a while, and I have Falling Satellites, but most of the older stuff is hard to find. It'll be great to get everything in one go.
-
46 bucks for 8 CDs is pretty good.
-
I wish they would finally rerelease their first two albums on vinyl... Milliontown is one of those albums that got me into prog back in 2006 (when I was 13) and I'd love a vinyl copy of it on my shelf.
-
So I went to check to see if I could still pre-order 13 Winters from Burning Shed, but it was sold out. :'(
Fortunately, Century Media had it still in stock for pre-order, and because I ordered the DT Distant Memories artbook yesterday, they sent me a 15% off coupon code for my next order, which I promptly used for 13 Winters and got it for less than $40 before shipping. That's a STEAL for 8 discs (even if I already have more than half of that material on CD in some form or another, though the remasters will be nice to add to my collection), so I'm pretty happy I didn't order from Burning Shed right away!
-Marc.
-
It's also still in stock at LaserCD for $42, where I just pre-ordered it.
-
Got my copy of Thirteen Winters this week, and it looks great. Haven’t had a chance to listen yet, but the packaging and artwork is awesome.
-
Should be receiving mine sometime next week. Got the email it shipped.
-
13 Winters just arrived. And it's a pretty Artbook. The pictures are great, and the story of Frost* is excellent. So glad to finally get a physical release of The Philadelphia Experiment, and to get Experiments In Mass Appeal.
-
heh, I have all of this music digitally, but what the heck, I like throwing my support behind artists like this so they'll hopefully keep going. Just ordered the artbook version of 13 Winters from LaserCD.com
-
The Experiments in Mass Appeal remix is great. You can actually hear the dynamics this time! The instrumental mix of Falling Satellites is really good as well. Overall, this was really done, and I'm looking forward to the next album.
-
Finally got my 13 Winters artbook in the mail today from Century Media. Even after the long delivery period, my mail carrier had accidentally delivered it to the wrong house because he couldn't read the number correctly (the 5 looked like a 6, he said).
Anyways, the artbook is well designed and put together, love the artwork and the liner notes. I ripped all the discs (except TPE) to my laptop and phone, and I've been listening to the remastered debut and it sounds SO good, but I kind of miss the bit about angels at the beginning of "Milliontown". Can't wait to hear how EIMA and FS sound remastered!
-Marc.
-
Overall I'm pretty happy with 13 Winters. I had forgotten how much I like this band :hat

FROST* return with fourth studio album ‘Day And Age’
Frost* are returning with their first new studio album in 5 years on May 14th, 2021. ‘Day And Age’ is the band’s fourth record, and features Jem Godfrey once again joined by John Mitchell & Nathan King, as well as 3 guest drummers: Kaz Rodriguez (Chaka Khan, Josh Groban), Darby Todd (The Darkness, Martin Barre) & Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mister Mister). The album also features actor Jason Isaacs.
Jem Godfrey comments of the new album: “2020 was the year of the studio for obvious reasons. As a result 2021 is going to be a bumper year for new music I think and we’re very happy to be riding that wave too into what I hope will be a better year for everybody.”
‘Day And Age’ was recorded over the course of 2019 and 2020, featuring 8 tracks and striking cover artwork by Carl Glover of Aleph Studios (Steven Wilson, Marillion, Steve Jansen). The full track-listing is below:
1. Day And Age 11:49
2. Terrestrial 5:13
3. Waiting For The Lie 4:31
4. The Boy Who Stood Still 7:33
5. Island Life 4:14
6. Skywards 4:13
7. Kill The Orchestra 9:27
8. Repeat To Fade 6:14
The album will be released on Limited 2CD (including a bonus disc of instrumentals), Gatefold 180g 2LP + CD (with etching on Side D), and as Digital Album. Pre-order starts March 19th.
In September 2019 Godfrey and Mitchell rented a cottage for a week in Helford, Cornwall and set about converting it into a recording studio. Day one saw them write and record “Skywards”, “Island Life” was written on day two. On day three, the duo wrote what was to become the title and defining track of the new album, “Day And Age”.
The following January, the band setup a new temporary studio for a further week in a converted coastguard tower at Dungeness in East Sussex. “We were 30 feet by the sea, next to a nuclear power station and a lighthouse, in midwinter. So there was hardly any daylight and the weather was dreadful”, laughs bassist Nathan King, “We wrote “Terrestrial” and “Repeat To Fade” there and you can definitely hear the bleak isolated oppression having an effect on us. The songs we wrote were far darker – the wind howling round the building at night, the power station generating crackles on the audio, a huge lighthouse next door sweeping light into the fog every 30 seconds and John screaming “ENJOY YOURSELVES YOU SCUM” into a microphone. It was absolutely brilliant!”.
In November 2020, Frost* released the career-retrospective collection ‘13 Winters’ which featured all their studio albums to date, plus live material, b-sides & last years ‘Others’ EP, all packaged in a beautiful artbook.
Frost* was formed in 2004 by keyboard player and singer Jem Godfrey, Released in 2006 the band’s debut album “Milliontown” was an instant success and is regarded by many as a classic in the modern prog rock genre featuring John Mitchell on guitar, John Jowitt on bass and Andy Edwards on drums. The band quickly followed it up with “Experiments In Mass Appeal” in 2008, in many ways the antithesis of “Milliontown” featuring a much more stripped back sound, more concise songs and a new band member and singer in the form of Dec Burke.
The live album “The Philadelphia Experiment” followed in 2009 and the a long gap followed before 3rd album “Falling Satellites” was released in 2016 with a new line-up of Nathan King on bass and Craig Blundell on drums, plus returning guitarist and singer John Mitchell on guitar who also co-wrote much of the album with Jem Godfrey.

Just saw the news on Facebook! Very exciting news, and a May release is just perfect! Looks like the album will be their shortest at just over 53 minutes long, but still in line with the others, which average around 55-58 minutes. Gotta also remember that they released an EP last summer as well.
Guess I better save up for the pre-order in 17 days!

Damned, I wanted to make a King Crimson joke :lol
I'm looking forward to this album, Falling Satellites needed over a year to finally explode for me but now I really love it. Pity that the absolutely insane Craig Blundell is not part of this band anymore, I think a lot of the drive and power on Falling Satellites came from his contributions to the sound. I only know Pat Mastelotto of the current drummers and I hope the sound will still be homogeneous and that there are not 3 totally different drum sounds throughout the songs.
-
Good news, but 3 drummers on one album sounds a bit schizophrenic to me :lol
Shouldn't have thought so. Arch/Matheos's Winter Ethereal had 5 different drummers across its 9 tracks and the album still had a very coherent sound and style.
-
I only know Pat Mastelotto of the current drummers and I hope the sound will still be homogeneous and that there are not 3 totally different drum sounds throughout the songs.
I never heard of Darby Todd before, but Kaz Rodriguez is a beast of a drummer. I think he's much more known in the Fusion world, but he's also a session guy, and I'm sure he did great for this album. I got really excited when Jem announced he got Kaz involved in the album.

Jem Godfrey comments: “Day And Age is about how we have become a planet full of transmitters. Everyone has the power to convey their thoughts far and wide. However nobody is listening because they’re too busy transmitting.”
Watch the previously released video for the track ‘Terrestrial’ here: https://youtu.be/wda09d-QdUk

Youtube recommended it and for a moment I got all excited thinking that the new album was out. Disappointed about needing to wait a couple more weeks for the full release but I really liked the song
-
Great song, but I gotta say, that Day and Age video just looks like their high school age kid animated it.

Yeah, supply chain issues are happening everywhere with everything these days. I'm having a hell of a time in I.T. right now getting critical stuff we need on time.
-
Got that email as well. :-\
Supply chain issues are a serious problem in my line of work as well. Seems every third call is me explaining to my customers how wildly estimated ETA's are at this point.
-
Enjoying this album a lot. The production is top notch! Favorite track so far: The boy who stood still.
Who else got this album today?

Listening on Spotify right now. Digging it so far. Sounds like a mashup of 80's Genesis and Synchronicity era Police. I love it!
I got the email for the download link this morning, but I'm at work, so I'll have to wait until I get home. Physical copy will probably arrive in June.
-
I might have to get the vinyl because I love the way this album sounds. The CD should arrive early next week.
-
Listening to John always makes my day . I personally liked Island Life the best after the first listen. I think I'll end up liking this album a bit more that Falling Satelites.
-
Streaming through YT music and wow how good does this album sound?
Amazing production and songs, getting a strong Police vibe to this record.
Will definitely be buying vinyl or CD.
-
just started my first full listen on apple music. hope I enjoy it… like the scum I am ;)

back in march I ordered from the european insideout shop even though I'm in north america, my last few experiences with century media had been underwhelming so I figured it couldn't be worse. Today I log on to insideout out to see this

Ahhh that is quite unfortunate! Thankfully, Century Media did make a digital download version of the album available for me today so I've got it on my phone and ready to give a listen.

I'm listening to this album a lot and I'm very impressed! For those that bought the CD version, who is drumming in each song?
-
Just on my 2nd listen and pretty good. Kill the Orchestra was the highlight for me.
-
The ending with Kill the Orchestra/Repeat to Fade is great!
The song Day and Age, in its complete version, has a great Porcupine Tree vibe :tup

Darby Todd (tracks: 2, 3, 7), Kaz Rodriguez (tracks: 1, 4, 6), Pat Mastelotto (tracks: 6, 8).
I'm giving the album a proper listen now, I really like the title track and Island Life so far.
-
Thanks, Zydar!
Darby on track 7? I would bet Pat Mastelotto because of the style and continuity between tracks 7 and 8. Also, Pat and Kaz play together on track 6?

Granted I don't have the physical copy, but that's what it says on Discogs.
https://www.discogs.com/Frost-Day-And-Age/release/18765568
And yeah I agree that it's odd that there are two drummers on the same track.
-
:tup
Edit: Still, since it wasn't informed the drummer on track 5, I would bet it's Kaz Rodrigues on this track (the drum style is very similar to track 1 IMO) and only Pat on track 6 (I saw a review about the album saying that the drummer on track 6 was Pat). Anyway, thanks again!

Another wonderful release from Frost* here. Just great stuff! :hat

LOL, honestly guys, I tried to withhold my enthusiasm for this album in my previous post because I didn't want to give away the fact that it's currently my album of the year. For me, It's pretty incredible! I loved their previous albums and I think many hold Milliontown in very high esteem. I wasn't certain the band could continue the quality that comes with this album. The wonderful melodies, the interesting song writing, and of course the awesome production. I am currently digging for interviews with the band to understand the songs and album more. I highly recommend people check it out if they have even faint interest. :heart

Those two albums were part of my early prog education when I was still a teenager and very influential for me. Especially Milliontown. As you all know () I am a vinyl nerd and a sucker for all things limited so I had to buy the colored ones from Burning Shed.
Well, combined with the import fees for that order (thank you Brexit), Rammstein tickets last week, an AirBnB for that concert for me and 9 (yes, nine) buddies of mine AND Big Big Train tickets a few weeks before, I now have almost no more money on my bank account :loser:

Ah this sucks! I bought the artbook thinking that the CDs were not going to release separately!
-
Very good album. Been enjoying it quite a bit over the last couple weeks.
I like the bookends the best - the title track definitely has a Police + 80s Genesis vibe and I love the drumming on it. And the ending with Kill the orchestra/Repeat to fade is pretty majestic...
But all songs are pretty great, really. Even the weirdness of The boy who stood still ;)
-
The Boy Who Stood Still reminds me of Tears For Fears' Mothers Talk, especially in the drum production and the outro.
Overall, this album, for me, is like a 21st century take on 80s albums like Synchronicity, So, Power Windows, Grace Under Pressure, Songs from the Big Chair, and a few other albums that captured the essence of what it was like to live in the last decade of the Cold War. I wish I could describe it better, but those albums, for me, really define what it meant to be alive in the 80s. They captured a sense of collective dread, of feeling like we are tiptoeing on the edge of annihilation, but also containing a little slice of hope. This album nails that same atmosphere for me, updated for the 21st century.
-
Great album. The music of The Boy Who Stood Still reminds me a lot of Mothers Talk by Tears for Fears, especially at the end. And the closing double-whammy of Kill the Orchestra/Repeat to Fade gives us by far the best of the album closers that aren't Milliontown.

YES to all of this - great description of the overall mood of the album. And there's definitely lots of Tears For Fears in The Boy Who Stood Still...love, in particular, the theme that first starts around 2:40

Frost* are set to hit the road in the UK later this year, for their much anticipated live-return. The band will be celebrating the release of their 2021 album ‘Day And Age’, and in advance of these tour they have launched a brand new video for the track ‘Skywards’. Watch it now here: https://youtu.be/fDww-kF6KW0

:hat
I have only had the pleasure of seeing mighty Frost* play live once with Fritzinger in 2008. We were 14 at the time, vaguely knew about the band and their shining masterpieces Milliontown and EIMA that emerged in the years prior. Anyway we witnessed them supporting Spock's Beard in Germany and were completely blown away.
In anticipation of finally seeing them play again next week in Birmingham (yes, Fritzinger and I are flying in from Germany to see them, worth it) I have been listening to nothing but Frost* for the better part of 3 weeks now. I've blasted their albums in the shower, during meals with my wife (she is probably contemplating divorce as we speak), in the car and via headphones while trying to fall asleep. It's part of my routine before a prog rock show that I am pumped about. It kind of feels like I am prepairing for the show in a way as if I was in the band. I wanna be able to recognize every song within the first couple seconds, know their solos and lyrics and be able to spot variations the bands are working into their live sets. During these last couple of weeks it has become apparent to me again that this band is quite unique in their style and the "niche" they have carved out for themselves. Due to Jem and Johns backgorund as producers for mainstream pop music, the way they write choruses, how harmonics are arranged and also their (and Declan Burkes) vocal styles constantly remind me of mainstream pop music of the early 2000s. Even though I find most of this music quite profane, this is not at all meant to come across as a negative observation - quite the contrary. It makes Frost* extremely special to me because it makes them the only prog rock band processing these kinds of stilistic devices (except for Muse maybe but that is the only example that comes to mind). What makes this such a winning formula in my opinion is the fact that Jem and Johns training as pop music producers trimmed them to come up with catchy melodies. Modern day pop music is much more of a business as it was 30 years ago, the main aim is to come up with melodies and harmonics that tend to stick as soon as you hear them - which is not really typical for prog rock as it usually takes me a couple of listens when wrapping my head around a new piece of music within the genre. So basically what they are doing is using their tool box of composing catchy pop songs but combine it with the ambitious and challenging aim of composing music that satisfies the snooty prog community. IMO this makes Frost* one of the most intriguing contemporary prog rock bands. :omg:
Anyway I would love to hear your opinions on this and appreciate some new perspectives on the matter...
I think it is safe to call myself a first ballet fanboy! See you in Birmingham!

Hello! Here I am in the new Cube. It's absolutely pissing down outside. Quick update, the new Frost* album is called "Life In The Wires". No release date yet as it's nowhere near ready, sometime next year probably, but I didn't want you to think I was arsing about not working on it. I very am indeed. To that end I'm now going to stick the CP70 through a Rat, a Bad Horsie and a whammy.
Have a lovely weekend! Eat plenty of vegetables.👋

Greetings Frosties!
It's Frost* inside and frost outside at Cube Towers today as it's -4 outside in UK money.
Work on Life In The Wires is progressing nicely and the old crew are back together - Craig, Nath and John are standing by, Mr Carl Glover is back onboard to deliver yet more cracking album art and even the mastering date is (foolishly) booked.
I reckon there's going to be about 80 minutes of music when this is complete so that raises an interesting thought or two doesn't it? If a single vinyl LP can hold about 40 minutes of music...🤔 🐑
Keep an eye also on the website (www.frost.life) in the next few weeks as we'll soon be announcing details of the digital releases of both "Island Live" and the long awaited "Falling Satellive" gig film from 2017.
So, at risk of an uncharacteristically grandiloquent declaration - Frost* are back in 2024!
(Just don't ask about gigs yet eh? One thing at a time. 😁)
Onwards!
Godfrey J x
Nearly 80 minutes of music?! Cannot wait for new Frost*!!

Alright!!! Their last album was great and I hope this one is as well. Hopefully they tour outside the UK and I can get to see them

great news from Jem. Also glad that Craig Blundell is still onboard for drums when a few years ago that seemed uncertain

I think it's more that he's back on board for drums, which I'm definitely excited for! I thought his drumming on Falling Satellites was killer!

Writing complete. Super rough mixes and first test assembly done. 86 minutes. 🤩

If anyone interested:
Afternoon all,
We are very happy to announce that the digital version of our Island Live blue ray concert film is now available for purchase, or rental, here –
https://vimeo.com/ondemand/451456
It feels like only 1 year, 2 months and 20 days ago since we played that show. Where does the time go eh?
We hope you enjoy it for those that haven’t seen it before and thank you very much for supporting the band should you wish to purchase, or rent, it.
Thank you!
Jem, Nath, John and Craig.

I absolutely love Falling Satellites and consider it one of the greatest and under appreciated post-00s prog albums. That album took a few spins but I keep coming back to it, always amazed how awesome it is. That build up from Dying Blues in 7/8 to Nice Day For It and Hypoventilate just doesn’t let you catch your breath. The sad thing is, not many people agree with me.
-
Has there been any word on the new album since what Marc shared some posts ago? I've been returning to my love for this band and remembered there's an album supposedly coming this year at some point.

I haven't seen any updates from Jem or the Official Frost* Facebook page, but I'm sure they're hard at work tracking the album now. I'm not holding my breath on this one until at least August or September. I'm just ecstatic that Jem is still producing new Frost* music! It seemed like a dream after their first album and multiple hiatuses and breaks.

I came onboard with Falling Satellites, so I never experienced those, but I definitely hope this band was more active than they apparently are. Looking forward to hear the new stuff!
