The really quiet "Suck it, bitch" at the very end of "Oklahoma Girl" is almost funnier than the rest of the song.

Community Property is the first time a song made me laugh out loud the first time I heard it.

As a fan of 80s hair metal (hey I was there, and had the hair!) I enjoy playing "spot the riff" or melody in the solos. Quality players though.

Yep. Since they're half parody band, I don't think they try very hide to obscure their references. Eatin' Ain't Cheatin' is blatantly just Unchained, and that's why I like it.
I don't mind the lyrics. Many 80s bands had these types of lyrics anyway, they're just ramping it up to excessive and hilarious levels, but beneath that they're great musicians with enjoyable songs.

I can't wait for the new album. One of my anticipated albums of the year, in fact.

Here's the link on Spotify, I'd recommend getting it, they've outdone themselves.
Title: Re: Steel Panther
Post by: BlobVanDam on November 01, 2011, 10:37:01 PM
I wouldn't quite say they've outdone themselves, as I still prefer the first album overall, but the new album is definitely almost as good. It just has a couple more clunkers for me. But I've been listening to it non-stop.

It feels like their inspiration is slightly less blatant on this album. I say slightly, because the album even kicks off with a Judas Priest copy, and you can still pick out some obvious influences, but the whole album feels a bit more unified with Steel Panther's heavy style, and I like that.

Musically the new album is on par with the first album. Lots of great riffs and layered guitar harmonies, and the vocals are great. I find the lyrics to be a bit less creative this time though. Not that they were anything close to poets, but some of the lines feel a bit lazier and padded (see "If You Really, Really Love Me").

But all Steel Panther fans (all 2 of them on this forum) should definitely get this album. You won't be disappointed!

Never heard them until last night while driving home ..Local radio station played the edited version of "17 Girls in a Row"..while it brought back memories of the 80's its not something I could listen too alot..the entire 80's hair metal scene was overdone in the 80's no need to bring it back
Title: Re: Steel Panther
Post by: BlobVanDam on November 02, 2011, 09:51:00 AM
I don't know how you would even edit that song. Every single line of the song is about banging chicks, and none of them are remotely subtle. :lol
And I'm so glad this kind of music is making a comeback with some of these new bands. Better than the vast majority of other shit that passes for "rock" these days.

Been listening to the first disc constantly since its release in 2009.  Was pumped for the new one; upon first listen, I think its pretty good but not in the same boat as the first.  This might change, but my initial opinions ususally stick.  Agree with Blob, the lyrics dont seem quite as creative.  Songs are still very catchy overall though.

I gotta listen to the rest but after like 3 tracks I can't say I enjoy the lyrics. The ones are the first were definitely crude but had some clever wordplay or just some that was just straight up funny. They're almost like, I dunno, blurting out swears and toilet humor at a speed that would make even a 14 year old boy's head spin.

I love the new album, but I have to agree.
The first album was (relatively speaking) a bit smarter with it's puns and wording, but the new album feels a bit more like padding up lines with random F words. That doesn't go for every song, but it's enough to be one of the reasons I still prefer the previous album. But musically I still think Balls Out is great.

I'm enjoying it, though maybe not as much as FTS, though that was several years in the making. Still playing "spot the song/riff/lick" and I'd love to see them live.

Just Like Tiger Woods is the standout and after ADTOE is song of the year!
Title: Re: Steel Panther
Post by: Chino on November 09, 2011, 10:18:52 AM
I am loving this new album. I thought it wasn't that good when I listened to it the first time. I have listened to it at least a dozen times now, and I think it is just as good as FTS if not better. Just Like Tiger Woods, Weenie Ride, Critter, and Gold Digging Whore alre all amazing. 17 Girls in a Row, Critter, and It Won't Suck Itself all get honorable mention. Apparently Balls Out is #1 on the UK rock charts, and #4 on the US rock charts.

All joking lyrics aside, Steel Panther is an awesome band. They are all very talented musically, and Michaels Starr's voice is incredible. I think they are better than 99% of the hair metal bands that existed in the 80's. I don't mean just in the studio, their on stage performance is spot on too. I'm glad that they are getting what I consider to be well deserved recognition. They have started playing off shows around the US as well as other parts of the world. They were in NYC recently, but I couldn't go because I had two night classes. I am really hoping they do some kind of tour. I can't help but think seeing them in concert would be entertaining as hell and a shit load of fun.

There's too much pastiche (and blatant lick and riff-borrowing) for it to work as a serious band, and I do enjoy playing spot the riff. I listened to it whilst doing some chores and it stood up well when not concentrating on the lyrics. Critter made me lol though. Certainly going to be a live favourite for the singalong!

If they really want to be offended they should hear the bonus track Handicap Slut. Makes Ricky Gervais look like Ghandi.

Oh, we most definitly will film it. :hat

We have drums and guitars down, and a possible bass player who is VERY much into glam (he's a Nikki Sixx lookalike!). We just need a singer. I've learned a few songs - they are just as fun to cover as they are to listen to.

Has anyone seen the clips from their latest DVD/Blueray? It looks like it's going to be awesome. They released this today:

It's funny, because I saw this when it aired and I hadn't started listening to them at that time.  I recognized the band name, so I knew WHO they were, but that was about it.  I remembered the "Sprinkler" guitar move, though, which was what had made me go looking for it in the first place.  :lol

I like that when you see them it's just as much of a comedy show as it is a concert. The last time they came to CT, Michael Starr closed out the night by saying something along the lines of;

"Okay everyone, in all seriousness, we had a great time tonight and we know you did to... but it's late and everyone has been drinking heavily. Please, if you drive home, and you start falling asleep, do a bump. GOODNIGHT!"

Fucking awesome.

Mrs. C. is a big Kelly Clarkson fan.  Loves her.  So while I've already gotten her on board with Steel Panther (unlike the average woman, she didn't immediately go "Oh, God, what a bunch of fucking pigs!" and found it all quite amusing), she even more enjoyed seeing the video of a drunken Kelly Clarkson getting on stage with Steel Panther to do Sweet Child of Mine.  Killer:

Excellent interview with Lexxi for their Pittsburgh show:

https://www.post-gazette.com/stories/ae/music/preview-steel-panther-leads-spandex-revolution-684908/

Quote
Put the words "metal band" and "Sunset Strip" together, and you pretty much know what to expect.

Steel Panther has no intentions of breaking the stereotype.

The LA band has it all -- big hair, bright spandex, garish logo and total glam-rock bombast a la Poison or vintage Van Halen.

The difference is none of those bands ever topped the Billboard Comedy Chart like Steel Panther did with its 2009 major-label debut, "Feel the Steel." It featured the hilarious anthem "Death to All But Metal," along with such deeper tracks as "Fat Girl (Thar She Blows)" and "Party All Day ([Expletive] All Night)."

Steel Panther is a metal parody band (or is it?) fronted by Michael Starr, whose track record includes stints with Route 66 (with Ratt drummer and Pittsburgh native Bobby Blotzer), L.A. Guns and Van Halen tribute band Atomic Punks. Steel Panther -- also featuring guitarist Satchel, bassist Lexxi Foxx and drummer Stix Zadinia -- started out as Metal Shop and Metal Skool, and with the name change and record deal, it toured the UK with Def Leppard and Motley Crue, opened for Guns 'N Roses and played the Download Festival in England in 2012.

Tonight, the band arrives for its second Pittsburgh show, still touring on the late 2011 release "Balls Out." In advance, Foxx, the glammiest member of the band, filled us in on Steel Panther's heavy metal exploits.

So, how is your tour going so far?

Right now we're in New York City. It was great, because we got to play Boston. That was really cool. It was probably the highlight because I think those people needed a metal band to come in there and kick their ass. It was a lot of fun, but we're looking forward to coming to Pittsburgh because I think the last time was 2009. Hopefully we'll pack it out.

If you had a daughter, would you let her come to the show?

I would totally let her go to the show. But I just wouldn't let her have a backstage pass. I wouldn't let her get near any of them especially Stix, and Satchel, and Michael, because they like to ... yeah, I wouldn't let them come backstage.

They always say about your band, "There are those who get it, and those who don't." Who exactly doesn't get it?

Stupid people. Mostly people who are dumb and just don't like metal. People who probably listen to, like, Oingo Boingo and Hoobastank and [expletive] Natalie Imbruglia, stuff like that. Stupid people. Because if you know anything, [expletive] metal rules, and we're bringing back heavy metal. Probably "stupid people" would be my answer.

I noticed in the poster for Rocklahoma that Papa Roach and Bush are in bigger letters than Steel Panther. Your reaction?

It's a bummer, but at the same time, when we were writing our letters, I didn't know how big our letters and their letters would be. I wonder if they wrote their letters on purpose to be bigger than our letters. I think they just have bigger letters than we do. It doesn't really bum me out that they have bigger letters in their band name than we do. We're going to go out there and bring heavy metal back and I don't care if they have bigger letters or not.

Great. Is there a mix of love and hate when you play those festivals?

I don't think so. I don't see that anybody hates. ... The people who hate us just don't watch it and the people who like us do. Nobody's ever come up to me and said, "You look stupid in your long ...." [pause] Yeah, people said that. But they haven't specifically said, 'Hey, I hate your band.' It's more like, "Hey, dude, you look like a [expletive] sissy," "You look like a girl." It's more like that kind of stuff: "You're dumb, that's why you have blond hair because you're stupid." But they don't say mean things about the band, it's mostly just me, and those people are insecure and ignorant and they were raised by probably monkeys or wolves or something, you know.

You guys specialize in '80s metal. What do you think of metal like As I Lay Dying and Between the Buried and Me?

Well, so you mean the different kind of metal than we are? Well, metal is metal. Personally, I don't get all the screaming and hootin' and hollerin' and all that stuff. I don't listen to that type of music, but I still think it's pretty badass because it has all the heavy guitar riffs and stuff. Like Lamb of God and Machine Head, they have really cool guitar riffs.

And I know Randy [Blythe, of Lamb], and he's great, but I don't understand what he's saying when he's singing or yelling or anything. So, I can totally respect what their metal thing is, but I like bitchin' metal like Whitesnake where you see girls dancing on cars and you see wind blow into bitchin' dudes' hair. That's the kind of metal I like. More like the glam side than that I-hate-my-mom side.

I understand that there's kids all over the world who are in their bedroom and hating their parents. We're just trying to bring back the fun metal. A lot of these groups probably grew up without parents, that's the only thing I can imagine, and that's probably why they're so mean.

You've had a bunch of famous musicians jam with you. What are your favorite guest appearances?

I would have to say Chazz Kroeger from Nickelback. We call him Chazz because we're friends. It's always really cool, because I never listened to Nickelback that much, but then we got to be friends and now I listen to a little bit, because we were like, "Dude, we should collaborate." That's a long word. "We should start working together." "Dude, totally, that would be awesome." So we went to his house in Vancouver and totally put him in spandex. I was just bummed he cut his hair.

If you notice on Nickelback's latest record there's some metal things in there. So if we can turn anyone into doing heavy metal, that's awesome. And Justin Hawkins from The Darkness was really cool. He jammed on our last record. We're going to have a couple guest stars on our next record, and I don't know if I can tell you who they are, but he's in a band that rhymes with Mef Eppard, and I'm not getting give it away, but his name rhymes with Mivian Flampbell.

Got it. So, what's up with playing Chad Kroeger's wedding?

Yeah, yeah, we got tickets. I don't know what I'm going to wear, but we already have our tickets and everything like that. But the biggest thing is what I'm going to wear. Kind of like a Britny Fox meets Cinderella outfit is what I'm going to come up with.

You're working on a new album. Are you playing any of the songs on this tour?

No, no, we're not. We're just going to wait till the record comes out, but we have a song that we think we're going to release in late summer, early fall. It's a party song. It's the best party song we have so far. People have been wanting it to be in movies and stuff already, so we have to get it ready. It's almost mixed and mastered. But we have to wait till it gets on air because people will just tape it and sell it and we won't make any money. They'll be recording at our live show and play it for their friends and that's [b.s.].

Have you considered any rap collaborations?

We were going to hook up with Lil Jon and do something, but he was on "The Apprentice" or something like that, the Donald Trump show. We would always like to do something like Aerosmith did, get with bitchin' rappers. That would be totally badass. As of right now we don't have any plans. We just saw Snoop Dogg yesterday. He was in one of the same interview buildings we were at -- should've asked him then. He's badass-looking and he's so tall. I didn't know how tall he was. I wanted to give him a big hug.

So, are you coming to the show?

Yeah, I'll try to make it. And, uh, I'll bring my daughter.

Yes! Do that. Please.

A friend of mine went to a press conference with them, where the fans got to ask them questions. She filmed it, and it was awesome.  :lol My favorite part was when it was her turn to ask a question.

*gets handed the mike*
- Hi...
Michael Starr: - Hi, how are you?
Satchel: - God, you're sexy.
Stixx: - Wanna meet up later?
Lexxi: - I wanna put my bass in her vagina.
Michael Starr: - Hold on a minute, don't move. *starts jerking off under the table* - Okay, I'm done.

And then she got to ask her question. :lol

These track titles sound like typical Steel Panther though, so I'm definitely getting this one.

I like both albums and some of their older stuff (Metal Shop etc...).....................personally I'd have loved to see Ralph sing with Van Halen for a while when Roth was out.   I know that's blasphemy for many , and I'm as big a fan of VH as anyone , but that guy just channels DLR in his prime.

Anyway................I'll be getting the new album.   I like the last 2 albums about equal - some of the tracks off Balls Out just go off in a live setting (Tomorrow Night etc..),  Each album has a few songs that go a bit too far for my taste but when they get the balance right they're great.

Apparently there's a deluxe edition coming with DVD footage from Aussie tour etc....... so might be worth waiting for/getting that.  I'm not up with the release dates etc...

New video for The Burden of Being Wonderful is out.  I like it.  It almost has a slight Hysteria-ish kinda feel to it.  I dig it.  Slightly NSFW.

Dammit Cozmo, beat me to it by half a minute. :lol

A decent song, although it's continuing the trend so far of being a bit soft, and has a hint of something I don't like. But I preferred the lyrics in this song to the last album, where they were much more blunt and less creative.

Don't really like it. I'm losing interest with these slower mid tempo songs they keep releasing. The joke might be over for these guys. They are still a great live band and that first release is still killer.

Listening to the streams of the songs from the new album, on their YT channel.  You can go to www.steelpanther.tv to see them or go to their YT channel, either way.

I must say, the lyric "There was so much love on your face, I couldn’t see the tears" is an instant classic.  :lol

I'm just glad I got to see even the abbreciated set at M3 last year.  I'm really digging the hell outta this new album.  Some pretty heavy stuff.  PLTITEOTW and TBOBW are two of the most lightweight songs on the album.

Got a copy of it yesterday. It has a few good songs, but not as good the last album, which wasn't as good as the one before that. Luckily Cozmo was right that the two singles were the lightest songs on the album.

Favourites would be Gloryhole, and Gangbang at the Old Folks Home. Bukakke Tears and Ten Strikes You're Out are also among the better tracks.

Just had my first listen to the new album.....to me it's a good , typical SP album........good music, humourous lyrics and very clever in parts but it's also a step backward in all departments from Balls Out.   The production on most songs is more raw , the songs are for the most part more basic (sounds like less thought/effort) , a lot of the humour isn't quite as clever and there's nothing as immediately catchy as Tiger Woods or Tomorrow Night.

Faves: Bukkake Tears and The Burden of Being Wonderful

Don't get me wrong - very good album , just not as good as what came before and I think after 3 albums of the same sorta stuff the joke is juuuuuuuust starting to wear the tiniest bit thin.  I'd like to see them do something a little different on the next album .

Demolicious #6.  They review a song called I Feel Nothing, by a band called Reaper.  The guitarist for that band is Mario Consolo, who's married to Cecilia, one of our members.

Small world.

I do actually prefer the slightly more raw production over the overcompressed sound of the last album, although it could be a bit more consistent in sound.

I'm listening to it for the 4th time now. Glory Hole is easily my favorite, especially at 2:20. That song ends really strong as well. Bukkake Tears might be my second favorite so far. The intro to Pussywhipped is their best intro yet (both album and song), but the rest of the song lacks a bit. I'd say Ten Strikes Your Out and B.V.S are tied for my least favorite tracks. Overall, this album is exactly what I expected. I like it. I'll give it a solid 7.95/10.

The intro to Pussywhipped is their best intro yet (both album and song)...

Agreed. It's shamelessly stolen from Metallica's "Battery", but SP usually produce their best material by ripping off other bands  :yarr

If anything, they should steal more.

I hear no similarity to Battery at all aside from being an acoustic intro to a heavy song. Never made a connection there.
But I agree their best stuff is usually the more clearly derivative stuff, such as Fat Girl, Eatin' Ain't Cheatin' and Party All Day; basically the first album. On the latest album, it feels more like common metal music with funny lyrics.

That said, there are some good songs on here, and I had Gloryhole stuck in my head when I woke up just now. I'm not sure what to make of that. :lol Maybe my day is planned?

I'm hooked on the new album.  I recently discovered the band.  I wanted to buy an album a while back, so I listened to both their albums on youtube.  I ended up getting Balls Out.  I'm finding I like the new album quite a bit better.  Gloryhole, Bukkake Tears, the list goes on and on.  So many good songs.

Liked it so much I just bought Feel the Steel.  I listened to it once, so I know I like it.  Looking forward to some more listens while at work tomorrow.  Man, people see me with my headphones on laughing.  If they only knew...

Glory Hole is officially my favorite SP song.

I really wanted to direct some from the "Women's Forsaken Shirt" thread to this thread and tell them what champions of feminism the band are.  I would specifically tell them that "Turn Out The Lights" would be the place to start, as it deals with the norms of female insecurity in an intimate relationship.

I didn't think anyone would buy it, though.  :lol

Until today I thought that the chorus of Eyes of a Panther says "lips like Satan".

I now feel very stupid.

If they don't say that, what is it they say?  I just looked up the lyrics at darklyrics.com and that's what is posted there too.   Ha, hopefully you weren't being sarcastic, in which case I totally missed it!!!  I'm kinda slow like that.

edit: oh, and nice new video!  THanks for the share.  I follow them on twitter but somehow missed it if they posted about it.

I thought today that "lips like satin" would make a lot more sense, actually, so I just assumed that those were the lyrics, 'cause "lips like Satan" doesn't really make all that much sense to me. I didn't check it though and it seems I was right initially. Whelp. What do ya know.

I was always sure it was Satan.

New video is meh for them, as is the song. When you compare it to the other music videos from the album, it's clearly the weakest. Funny concept though.

I don't know if you guys saw yesterday's post on SP's Facebook page?  The winner of the Steel Panther Halloween look alike contest, where the winner gets a signed vinyl?  The winner, who dressed as Satchel, is the guitarist for a metal band in my area.  I just saw and talked to the guy Wednesday night.

"Lick my balls and wait for gravy. Fa la la la la, la la la la"

"Going to the show. Gonna do blow on they way. Snowing in my nose. Laughing all the way"

"I bought this toy for you. Put it up in your bum"

So a total random thing, I was listening to Party All Day and recognised some vocals. Looked it up on wiki and it was of course Justin Hawkins. Clicked his name on wiki to see what he's been up to and WTH:

Quote from:
Justin David Hawkins (born 17 March 1979, died 03 July 2015) is an English musician...

Haven't heard anything so what's that about?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Hawkins

Edit: Nevermind, removed from wiki so it was probably some prank.

That's the problem with Wikipedia, any one can add info

It can also create some good funnies though.  In recent weeks a few issues with Swedish guitarist Tommy Denander have come to a head with some pretty heavy online fisticuffs involving a few well know people in the industry including Steve Lukather.  One of the many issues with Denander is that he has a habit of exaggerating (bigtime) the artists he has worked with/albums he has appeared on and spends half his life spruiking all these names.

Anyway............it has since been removed but in amongst the neverending quotes of praise that Tommy had entered onto his own Wikipedia page someone managed to squeeze this little gem:

"Tommy has been a true source of inspiration and a pleasure to work with. I would never have completed Symphony #5 had it not been for Tommy's input. If you think he's a good guitar player, wait until you hear him tear it up on harpsichord on my new album!"

That. Was. LEGENDARY.

First, huge Cheap Trick fan (even the lean years and the later years).   Of all their hundreds of songs, if you said, "Stadler, guess which Cheap Trick song Steel Panther covered?"  I'da said "She's Tight".

Second, Robin Zander still has it.  Nice cameo on the pre-chorus.

Third, the song is actually REALLY good.  Right in Ralph's vocal sweet spot.

Fourth, hilarious vid.   Loved when the bass player grabbed his hammy after the high kick, and nice touch with the piece of cherry pie and the cameo from the chick made up to look like Bobby Brown from the Warrant video.

Only downsides:  Ralph looked like he had a little work done before the shoot, and I didn't need to see Robin with the lipstick in closeup.

BONUS!   The next song played is "Gloryhole!".      "I don't wanna know... who's s****** my d*** today!"

("My Love Is Like A Tire Iron", by Ted Nugent, will forever and always be number one.  "It Won't Suck Itself" is now a distant third.)

While I'm impressed that they're at the point of debuting their music videos on adult-oriented sites, I have made it a point to avoid such sites as a personal choice.  I suspect that it will end up on YouTube at some point, given the content of some of the other videos they've put on YouTube.

Awesome!  That's actually a pretty damn good song.  Of note, Satchel is playing a Charvel instead of a Kramer.  Interesting.

I dug it more than anything from the last album. Slightly disappointed by the women though. They've done better. I didn't even recognize them.

This is how I feel. Other than a handful of good songs on their subsequent albums I haven't enjoyed anything as much as the debut. I get that they are musically talented but the humor doesn't resonate with me like it once did (must be getting old). I would still love to see them live sometime though.

I prefer Balls Out to the debut. It's been a case of diminishing returns since that one.
I do enjoy spotting the riffs and licks they've "borrowed".

Same thing Chino - the name change was due to some sort of trademarking issue if memory serves correct.   The same album cover was done with Metal Skool on it later.

Anyway.............Big Boobs was the only track on the album that I really enjoyed.  The rest was patchy if memory serves correct.

After a first listen, I'd say the two singles are by far the best things on the album. The rest did nothing for me at all. Looks like it might continue the trend of me enjoying half as much as I did from the previous album.

Listened on YouTube last night. Thought it was ok. Some different stuff inthere for SP and better songs than the first couple of songs released. There was something missing though and I'm not sure what. Things sounded too smooth and a bit lifeless. Better than I was expecting though.

And if they are to continue the parody, the next album has to go grunge.

I like it. Better than the last one. And I didn't have high hopes going in. Could do without the Cheap Trick cover. They only have three good songs and one of those is an Elvis song... and She's Tight isn't one of them

Who?  Cheap Trick???? Wha???

Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace
Downed
Southern Girls
I Want You To Want Me
Surrender
Auf Weidersehn
Takin' Me Back
Stiff Competition
Dream Police
Way Of The World
I'll Be With You Tonight
Voices
Stop This Game
Can't Stop It But I'm Gonna Try
I Love You Honey But I Hate Your Friends

And that's just the first five albums. I haven't even gotten to the deeper cuts or the "80's hits".   Songs like Tonight It's You, Standing On The Edge, Wait For An Answer, All I Need Is A Dream, Say Goodbye...  I could list 10 more easy, but my kid needs breakfast.

This is Steel Panther guys.  They are not going to cover Tonight It's You.  She's Tight is perfect for them and I disagree that it's a bad song.  Also they lyrics fit to what SP does.

I wasn't suggesting that; I agree that the SP cover is perfect.  I was commenting on the odd statement that Cheap Trick "only has three good songs".   Maybe only three songs you like - fair point, opinions, subjective, whatever - but not only "three good songs".

Lexxi Foxx has voluntarily checked himself in to an undisclosed "sex rehab." He will have to miss the current U.S. tour that recently kicked off in Chicago. The band's friend of over 30 years and backstage doorman Spyder will be filling in on bass for the upcoming tour dates.

"We love Lexxi Foxx… and his mother," explains drummer Stix Zadinia. "We support his decision to enter sex rehab. We can't wait for him to get back on the road with us after he learns how to have better sex."
So what's the real reason?  :rollin

That’s SP at their best. The gross out lyrics usually fall flat with me, but when the lyrics are a bit “cleverer”  (by SP standards of course) they are funnier.

Have I already said that SP are basically a one joke band and should have made one album and that's it.

Not in a " they suck and should give up " kind of way. But how long can you stretch that one gag before it gets really boring ?

You're 100% right, but it still works, and people are willing to pay for it. I only discovered them when Heavy Metal Rules came out, and loved their show here in Toronto in 2019.

How is it any different than Weird Al Yankovic?   I'm not the hugest "comedy in music" guy, but I find it amusing, and the playing is interesting enough that more power to them.

I think Weird Al is a bit of an anomaly because he's reinvented himself over the years and where you have other forms of comedy that get dated, he seems to go with the times and has managed to stay somewhat relevant even into modern times. I think also the fact he tends to disappear for a few years before popping up with a new thing kinda keeps it fresh in a way. Definitely have a lot of appreciation for him even if I'm not super familiar with his overall work.

Steel Panther may be a one and done joke but their music is silly and funny and I don't really see the harm in them putting out more albums. There's a lot of bands who are basically the same for decades but if it's what the fans want then whats the problem?

I didn't say they suck or their music is shit. It was simply wondering how long a band like them can keep going since once you've seen them and heard them - you've seen THE joke.

I also meant that perhaps they would have worked better as a one-off. Form a joke hair metal band - make one album and then be done with it.

Not " They suck i wish they would just split up ffs ".

If you wanna go down the road of "Wouldn't it have been better if they just put out that one album and left it on that high note?" logic you could easily dismiss the entire discographies of multiple bands. Whether it's Steel Panther, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters or whoever else doing their thing, making their music within their "sound" for years, you could always argue that they could or should have stopped but many of the fans would disagree. Personally I'm not a huge fan of Steel Panther or anything - they're a fun guilty pleasure kind of band but IMO their funniest songs aren't on the debut.

Steel Panther works because the songs and musicianship stands up, lyrics aside. Transport them back to the 80s, tone down the lyrics and they would have been up there with the likes of Poison, Winger etc.

In the UK there was a parody band back in the 80s called Bad News where a bunch of comedians put a band together and filmed a couple of episodes taking the piss out of metal. They made a couple of albums with some songs and sketches thrown in. It was funny, but they didn’t have the songs or chops to carry it off, though they did play at the Donington monsters Of Rock festival. They did do a pretty awesome version of Bohemian Rhapsody.

That's the main takeaway with Steel Panther I think is that they're a lot better musically than they have any right to be with the juvenile lyrics that might have been written by a 10 year old.    A song like "Gloryhole" is a lot catchier and better musically than a lot of the bands they are 'making fun of' imo.

That"s definitely something that makes me appreciate them. They're really solid musicians that has alot of milage under their belts which makes the band more belivable. Without that I highly doubt my interest in them would've lasted very long.

I see Steel Panther as a two-trick pony. They are killer musicians, and I love them for that by default just because I'm a sucker for 80's glam metal. Then there's the raunchy stuff. It doesn't get old for me because a lot of their stuff is actually really clever. I'm sure Dice fans know what I'm talking about. That dude's been doing basically the same exact shtick for decades, and for whatever reason, people love it and want it time and time again. Steel Panther does that for me. The songs are funny enough, but their back and forth banter live and raw talent is what seals the deal me. It's almost like you're getting an 80's concert and a stand up comedy show with four comedians for the price of one ticket.

That's it for me.  I love "Weenie Ride" (phrasing!) not because the lyrics are hilarious, but because it's the whole ethos.  They NAIL the idea of a power ballad, and mock it to all hell all at the same time, AND the lyrics are funny.   I'm not suggesting that Steel Panther is Shakespeare or Sir Laurence Olivier high art, but there's more to it than just locker room humor.

Yea that's another thing, their banter live work so great. I wonder how much of their act that is well prepared or if it's just a natural thing for them. I guess at this stage in their career it's more of a natural thing. Either way that's not something that's easy to pull off in a natural way.

It would also work better if the guys in the band were completely inoffensive, down to earth and ordinary in their personal life.

I have no idea what the 'actors' are like IRL.

I really enjoy SP. More is more wrt to fun in rock/metal. So tired of that po-faced attitude that is the norm.

I loved Bad News. Warriors Of Genghis Khan was genius - and that first album was produced by Brian May! Yeah, that Brian May!

Not sure if it came up here before, but here's a link to the only release from Skrapp Mettle, a parody band featuring Jeff Scott Soto on vocals, with a slightly classier delivery on dirty lyrics than Steel Panther. This one came out in 1991 and I only got the chance to listen to one song at this point, but what I heard was awesome. Give it a spin.

I interviewed Michael Starr today. Here's a few questions I got great answers for:

"What's the meaning behind "It's Never Too Late to Get Some Pussy Tonight?"

"My next question is deep. It might be dark, or it might be rosy. Can you explain to me the lyrics of the song 'Magical Vagina""?

"On the song 'Instagram' you address what is probably the biggest epidemic in the last three years, which is the excessive use of filters on social media. How do you cope with that?"

"Was the song 'My Dick is all that and More' based on personal experience?"

What is the best way to rejuvenate after you sleep with "17 Girls in a Row"?

"Gene Simmons said he has slept with about 3,000 women. How do you feel about Gene getting so close to your number?"

Not sure how many of their songs can be performed in front of a more family friendly environment, but good on them for getting some exposure.

I had the pleasure of seeing Steel Panther on Sunday as part of my bachelor weekend with 5 of my closest friends. This was my 7th or 8th time seeing SP, and it was without a doubt the best show they've put on yet. They played at Foxwoods Resort Casino with a proper sound system, and novelty of the act aside, it was the best rock concert I've seen in years. They were so freaking tight, and Michael Starr was absolutely slaying it on the vocals. The sound in that venue is one of the best in the state, and I really enjoyed what Spyder brought to the table as well (this was my first show since Lexxi left).

At one point a guy was getting dragged/chased out by security. Satchel called him an asshole for leaving and the guy managed to get back up to the stage. Michael actually handed the guy the mic for a few seconds before security got to him. He made it back into the show later on in the night, and he got bounced pretty good then too (got that on video). Prior to Girl From Oklahoma, they usually serenade a girl from the audience for a few minutes. They called out a pregnant girl that was about three weeks from popping and they treated the situation exactly as you'd expect them to  :lol

This is the second time in a row I've seen them and haven't heard Fat Girl (Thar She Blows). I wonder if they're taking it out of rotation for a while. Seems like an odd move because I always considered that their "must play" song, like Livin' on a Prayer, Piano Man, Free Falling, Born to Run, etc..

I'd highly recommend seeing them on this tour if you're so inclined. The setlist was excellent and they're really on their game right now. Spoiler of setlist below:

Eyes of a Panther

Let Me Cum In

Asian Hooker

Man in the Box
(Alice in Chains cover)

The Burden of Being Wonderful

Friends With Benefits

Death to All but Metal

1987

Ain't Dead Yet

Impromptu Song for a Girl
(For Ashley & Sophia)

Girl From Oklahoma

Community Property

Party All Day (Fuck All Night)

Encore:
Gloryhole

I think it's about time they bring a lady into the mix. They could open up a lot of avenues, song wise, if they got a woman on the mic that could wail like Lita Ford.
