Title: Let's think outside the box on this one...
Post by: hefdaddy42 on May 01, 2010, 05:13:43 PM
...and tell me what songs you would like DT to cover (whether live or for a future bonus disc or something).  Please don't list any songs by other prog metal bands - let's use our imagination and think of something interesting that they could do well with.

My pick is "Jessica" by The Allman Brothers Band.

"Take Five" and "Blue Rondo A La Turk" by Dave Brubeck Quartet

Anything by Bela Fleck & The Flecktones.

Also, my obvious prog choices would be Yes' Drama, Genesis' Wind & Wuthering, and Rush's Signals.

Yeah my serious answer was going to be some fairly laid back jazz like Dave Brubeck. Some of his tunes are so great to jam over, DT would have a field day.

Exactly, and being that "Take Five" was originally constructed as a showcase for the drummer, I'm sure MP would enjoy cover that "solo", much in the way I'm sure he enjoyed doing the drum solo on the Santana cover during the sessions for TA's The Whirlwind

What about some classic German thrash metal, like Kreator? They've done Metallica, but that would be a different challenge entirely, as it's a different style and I'd love to see how they would handle it.

I think he, at least implied, that metal in most forms was "inside" the box.

He only mentioned prog metal, which I guess means most prog in general. What I said is, even if metal, definitely outside of the box for DT.

Oh please no - besides they already did part of Freebird on OiaL - that's enough!   :P

I don't see the point of using Raw Dog as a negative argument for anything since it's not even considered by the band to be a full, 100% strong and polished DT song.

I mean I dunno, I can't really think of anything else good.  And I don't wanna hear them butcher Sgt. Pepper (not that I mean for that to reflect anything upon DT, I just don't think that's the sort of music they could play well).

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Soul to Squeeze. I think James' soft vocals would do it justice, however I don't think it should be played the same instrumental wise. I'm thinking slower with some piano in it, maybe an epic build up to a soft ending?

Les Misérables - Bring Him Home. Nothing to change I would just like to hear James' sing it.

Listening to a live version of it during my workout this morning, it occurred to me that Dream Theater could probably do serious justice to U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name," so long as Rudess sticks with the background keys and doesn't try to Rudess it up with annoying solos.  JLB has the vocal style to nail the vocals just right, they have covered U2 before (I am guessing JLB and Portnoy are the U2 fans in the group), and the song was written to be a monster live.

Any Firewind song from Premonition or Allegience. Something more aggressive like "Till The End Of Time", "Where do we go from here" and maybe some softer stuff like "Deliverance" or the absolutely majestic "Before The Storm". seriously guys. go youtube that song right now. 3 and a half minute instrumental of pure bliss.

Also, they've showed more power metal influences in their past couple albums, how about something from Gamma Ray? or Stratovarious? They have some great songs that I think would work. Maybe it's just wishful thinking though. Then again, most of this thread is just that lol.

Was thinking the same thing.  Whoever said "Blue Rondo a La Turk" gets a prize.  Some other cool tunes/albums:

Bon Jovi-Slippery When Wet
Styx-Most of the Tommy Shaw-written tunes, like "Blue Collar Man," though a song like "Babe" would be good too.
Boston-"Smokin'"
Queen-Yes, they've already covered Queen, but they do it so well dammit!
Derek & the Dominoes-Layla
Living Colour-"Cult of Personality"
Meat Loaf-"Bat Out of Hell," "I'd Do Anything For Love."

I find DT at their best when they're rockin' out.

Styx-Most of the Tommy Shaw-written tunes, like "Blue Collar Man," though a song like "Babe" would be good too.
Good call on Styx. I hadn't thought of it before, but James would be phenomenal on some of their songs.

Barracuda by Heart.  An instrumental section that DT could really appreciate.

I'd love to see them play some fusion-esque stuff.
Something like

CAB - Hold On

Or

Howe Wooten Chambers - Extraction

both don't have vocals though.

Especially Come Sail Away.

This is my favorite track amongst the 4 cover albums. Phenomenal.

I've always thought they'd go a great version of any Boston song. I think it'd be right in their wheelhouse. But that's not exactly out of the box, now is it.

Bon Jovi?? really. If they covered any Bon Jovi song, it'd have to be Blood On Blood.

Blood on Blood. Great call TAC.  That's my favorite album cut by them.

How about Judas Priest's Green Manalishi.  That would rock.

Yeah, Blood On Blood is a great song. it always reminded me of Thin Lizzy's It's Getting Dangerous from their Renegade album. (check it if you don't know it!)

As far as Priest goes..can you imagine James singing Riding On The Wind?! That'd be insane!

Here's a few that I think DT could really do justice to:

Metallica--Unforgiven III:  I'd love to hear it, just to see JLB exceed Hetfield's scream.
Foreigner--Jukebox Hero:  While you can't really match the original, this has a great epic feel to it that DT could replicate quite nicely
Rush--BIg Money:  I have no idea how this would sound, but I think this would be a cool slant on their 80's synth-era material
Jesus Christ Superstar--Gethsemane:  If JBL is on his game, the vox on this would be truly amazing
Scorpions--Woman:  A lesser known tune from the Face the Heat album, this would be really smoking
Nine Inch Nails--Sanctified:  JM's bass riff on this one would be incredible.
Judas Priest--Touch of Evil:  While no one can touch Halford, James screaming "YOU'RE POSSESSING ME!!" would be out of this would

Bryan Adams - "Run To You"
Billy Joel - "All For Leyna" (a fun song to let Jordan loose on)
The Beatles - "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"
Ozzy - "Perry Mason"
Van Halen - "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)"
Journey - "Wheel In The Sky"
Megadeth - "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due"
