Title: The proper way to write album and song titles
Post by: KevShmev on April 23, 2010, 12:27:32 PM
Song titles go in quotes.

Album titles go in italics.

To do it any other way is wrong.

Please adjust your posting accordingly.  TIA.

Technically, you're right.  But I usually forget the quotes for song titles.

The Queen's not reading my posts, so I don't see what difference it makes.

This. Screw italics and such. I'd rather nag on people who writes it like

Song Title - Band Name

it always, always throws me way off, even if I've heard of the band before. Brain not comprehendo!

Imo the quotes for song titles are unnecessary. It doesn't look too good and usually just writing starting each word with a capital is enough. And a text with plenty of song titles, each one with quotes, looks terrible.

What are the rules for capitalization? Are you supposed to capitalize the first letter of everything or are you suppose to leave works like "the", "a" or "and" lower case? I see it done both ways so I've never known which is correct.

I believe the correct way is not capitalizing words like "the" but I do it anyway 'cause I feel dirty otherwise.

In my library on the PC, 99% of words are capitalised, otherwise everything will look uneven. A good example of that would be the ...And Justice For All album.

The one and ONLY place where "the", "a", "for", "from", "and", "as", "an", "but", "nor", and/or "or" has to be capitalize is if it's at the beginning of the title. ("is", "are" and "be" should be capitalize regardless where they are in the title)

Example:

"From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness" = correct

"From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness" =/= correct

Yes, what I wrote is basically the rule.

Rule:

Always capitalize the first and last words of titles of publications regardless of their parts of speech. Capitalize other words within titles, including the short verb forms Is, Are, and Be.

Exception:   Do not capitalize little words within titles such as a, an, the, but, as, if, and, or, nor, or prepositions, regardless of their length.

I used to get mashed potatoes as both of my sides when I'd get a combo there and break up the biscuit into pieces about the size of a quarter and mix it all together. Try it some time and thank me later.

Technically, you're right.  But I usually forget the quotes for song titles.

Yeah, I used to not do that it that way either, and really, that is very forgivable. :p :lol

However, every time I read the Rush Contents Under Pressure book, I want to strangle the author.  He put all of the song titles in italics (WRONG) and merely bolded the album titles (WRONG).  :censored :censored :censored

What are the rules for capitalization? Are you supposed to capitalize the first letter of everything or are you suppose to leave works like "the", "a" or "and" lower case? I see it done both ways so I've never known which is correct.

Those should be lower case, unless they are the first or last word of a song or album title.

And prepositions are interesting in that they should be lower case if they are four letters or less EXCEPT if part of a two-word phrase.  To explain that, "Carry On" is a two-word phrase, so "on" would be capitalized in "Carry On Wayward Son."  Make sense?

This site helps explain it: https://aitech.ac.jp/~ckelly/midi/help/caps.html

Ultimately, I am too much of a spelling and grammar nazi :lol, and I am sure I make a few mistakes here and there, but I always try not to. ;)

You don't need a comma after the word "Nazi."  You should also capitalize the N.  :police:

But Kev, using the Rush book you mentioned as an example (which I've never read): even if it's not "correct" according the standards you're used to, the point is being able to distinguish one from another. So using bold and italics serves the same purpose and is equally effective IMO (if it's used consistently throughout the book).

I always do it like this

Band - Album - "Song"

And I usually capitalize every word of a title, I like it like that.  :)

Who's to say we're not actually supposed to be using the colon instead of the dash?

Dream Theater: "Voices" Awake

Even though I'm an English Education grad student, I really take a pragmatic approach with stuff like this.  The main point to me is distinguishing between different titles and names so that they do not run together.  So if I am writing a post along the lines of "Dream Theater's 'Caught In A Web' is a great song," the quotes serve mainly to prohibit this: "Dream Theater's Caught In A Web is a great song" -- which is annoying because all of a sudden I'm thinking, "How did Dream Theater get caught in this web... oh, the song... man I feel dumb now."

Whereas if I'm posting in the "What Are You Listening To" thread, the above problem does not result if I just write:

Dream Theater - Caught In A Web

I would also be interested to know if these matters are treated consistently across style guidelines such as MLA and APA.  Because if there are discrepancies between those two (or others), then all of a sudden we have a problem saying any one way is "the way."

Anyway, grammar is determined much more by usage and societal expectation than by any set of "rules" out there somewhere.  Do you need to use proper grammar and style in your essay application to Harvard?  Sure.  Does it matter whether or not you italicize an album title on an internet music forum?  Probably not quite as much.  Not that I don't always proofread my posts before I submit them -- of that I am guilty.  And while I'm pretty sure that "--" is not the greatest grammatical formulation, I stand by its usefulness.

holla back...
