Title: Soilwork Appreciation
Post by: Quadrochosis on March 20, 2010, 04:59:10 PM
Has anyone heard of this band? One of the few (non-Progressive) Metal bands that I really enjoy. They have so many good songs over a healthy and respectable back catalog of releases. I'm listening to Stabbing the Drama right now and I have to say that it truly is a stellar piece of work.

They are very heavy, but at the same time their singer has a good way with melodies (kinda like Devin Townsend) which makes the music catchy and very enjoyable.

Yeah, never been too impressed with them compared to their brethren sorry.

But the singer is good, especially on his side projects and guest spots :tup

Natural Born Chaos is a very good album

By far one of my favourite bands, and along with In Flames opened me up to the world of Melodic Death metal.  The guitar team of Ola and Peter was unstoppable on those few albums they shredded on together.

Steelbath was a great debut and Chainheart Machine is an absolute classic. Natural Born and Predators are just simply amazing melodic death metal.  The song As We Speak is amazing!!!  Figure Number Five I would say would be my favourite.  Great killer songs all the way through, all with outstanding choruses.  An amazing record.

The last two albums have been a good listen, but not to the standard of the ones I just mentioned, but still kill most bands from this genre.

Can't wait for the new one with Wichers back in the fold.  Hopefully back to the Natural Born day.

AMAZING BAND!!!  :metal

They're a good band. NBC, Chainheart Machine and Predator's Portrait are absolute Melodic Death Masterpieces. I don't find Sworn to the Great Divide last album good, though... It's kind of slowed down and less aggressive (Even though it has its moments, like in "The Pittsburgh Syndrome") you know... I think Soilwork's best angle is the aggressive, semi-Thrash Metal One.

Anyway, I hope that thir next album is a return to the good'Ol Predator's-NBC Days.

Fingers crossed mate.  This album could really put them right back in the spotlight as far as the genre is concerned.

I like their two most recent releases a lot. Then again everything they've put out is great in my opinion.

I thought they were on the verge of greatness after listening to albums like Natural Born Chaos, A Predators Portrait and Stabbing The Drama, but that was until I listened to their latest piece - Swon to a Great Divide.

About as average as a metalcore album can possibly get. Absolutely no distinction between any of the songs.

I don't rate them as highly anymore after that. The main reason is simpy because they've become stale and i've moved on by listening to better bands by educating myself with better music.

I'll bob my head to some of their tunes though, for sure.

Bump for discussing The Panic Broadcast. It is indeed a step in the VERY right direction. While still following the clean vocals and clean parts of STAGD -And that's not necessarily a bad thing, the intro to "Enter the Dog of Pavlov" was incredible-, and while still having some weak points like "Night Comes Clean", it also had the heaviness and badassery of A Predator's Portrait and Natural Born Chaos embodied in songs like "Late for the Kill, Early for the Slaughter", "Two Lives Worth of Reckoning" (Whose solo just blew my mind) and "King of the Threshold".

I wasn't expecting an album this good, And the drums are just :metal. Welcome back, Soilwork.

Also, THE RIFFS MAN, THE FUCKING RIFFS!!!!! :2metal:

Oh, wow. I haven't heard from this band since early high-school when I heard Nerve blaring out of a friend's car stereo and we went joy riding soon after *reminisces* Ah...good times. But um...that is quite literally the only thing I have ever heard from them. That said, I downloaded the song soon after that wonderful experience and listened to it nonstop as I half-assed a math project. I blame that song for not getting a perfect grade on such an easy project. I might check out their catalog. Time to stumble down nostalgia lane though and listen to that song again...

The Panic Broadcast is indeed a massive improvement.

Enter Dog Of Pavlov is a great song.

It's just a shame that all of their albums are starting to sound similar. I know they're just a metalcore band, but they had some signs of genius in their earlier work. They clearly don't have the ability to adapt, which is why I don't rate them that highly anymore. They remind me of In Flames and how they create the same type of album again and again.

Still, it's a big improvement considering the garbage that was Sworn To A Great Divide.

IMO Stabbing the Drama is their best album.
STAGD is a pathetic excuse for an album.
New one didn't click on the first listen, may give it another spin at some point.

I used to love this band about 3 years ago though, I would have classed them in my top 3 below DT and Opeth.
Not anymore though ;)

Finally picked up Panic Broadcast.  It's.....impressive.  Being a Soilwork freak when I discovered FNF, NBC, CM and PP I can say this is a very good album.

It seems like there are many different types from previous albums put into one.  It's not a return to Chainheart.  Saying that is just laughable.  Bjorn's voice IMO is a lot weaker than what it was on Chainheart.  His screams are getting a little thing and aren't as brutal like on the early albums.  His clean singing however is improving.  I thought there would be more soloing from the reviews I read.  Yes, Two Lives and Akuma have amazing solos, but IMO could have used a little more shredding IMO, especially from Peter.  Slyvian is an excellent guitarist though.

Late for the Kill - Not as hard hitting as most of their other openers but it serves its purpose.  More of a Stabbing the Drama sounding song.

Two Lives - Great song.  Nice chorus and amazing guitar solos.

The Thrill - One of my favourites.  Reminds me strongly of Figure Number Five.  Excellent chorus, definite highlight.

Deliverance is Mine - Could have been on Predators Portrait.  Nice pace, nice solo, a good song.

Night Comes Clean - Brings Natural Born Chaos to mind.  The chorus is a little awkward IMO, but not displeasing to the ears.  Nice Figure Number Five middle section.

King of the Threshold - Didn't really click with me on the first listen.  Great speed and solo and Bjorn sounds great on the end.  Sounds like a heavier Stabbing the Drama or STAGD song.

Let This River Flow - WOW.  Amazing song, great melodies.  One of Soilwork's finest.  Just a guitar solo would have made this song perfect!!

Epitome - Excellent groove, verse and chorus.  Figure Number Five comes to mind again.

The Akuma Afterglow - Possibly my favourite.  Amazing song, great intro, chorus and the solo section is mindblowing!!!!  MUSIC WIN!

Enter Dog of Pavlov - With the hype of this one, I couldn't help but to be dissapointed.  A great intro, but doesn't really go anywhere.

Sweet Demise - Lucky is was only a bonus track.  Not too bad though.

Oh man that song bring back memories for me, i was in a band at the time that album came out, we played similar music and Soilwork were a huge inspiration to us. We actually rehearsed in the same building as Soilwork at one time. I got to chat with Henry a couple of time, really nice dude and a great drummer. Sad he's not longer in the scene.

The last time I had any interest at all in Soilwork was, 'Natural Born Chaos', even then I thought that was a little too polished for me.
I haven't bothered with them at all since.
So with word of mouth, reviews and a good buzz about the new album, I decided to take the plunge.
For $19.99 for a Nuclear Blast release and a double CD at that (their CD's here in Australia are generally the most expensive) I had a good feeling about it.

I got home put the CD on my stereo and fuck me, sounds amazing, fantastic production and great songs.

So far it's awesome.  :metal Let The First Wave Rise and Vesta are the ones that floored me first but i've only scratched the surface because it's alot of songs, it really feels like a monumental task to listen to the album and it's somewhat weird to have 20 new songs from a non-prog band thrown at you and it dosen't get better when your realise the lack of fillers. #Firstworldproblem  :lol

I do wonder why they choose to put Memories Confined as the second track and not This Momentary Bliss? Nothing wrong with the song but Spectrum Of Eternity is such a energetic song and going from SOE to MC drags it down for me. I feel TMB would have worked better but that's just a thought from me.

Man, just got this tonight, this is definitely a big one.  I don't think I'll even worry about disc 2 for a while, disc 1 is a lot to take on right away, definitely like what I'm hearing but.  Seems like quite a bit of variety in the songs, good stuff.

Post by: wolfking on March 10, 2013, 05:05:51 AM
Okay, I've managed to listen to the first disc a few times over the weekend, and it's pretty incredible.  Not a single filler and consistent, yet some great variety within the tracks.  The guitar work just fits, and some songs need the shred, other just a quick melody line and that's it.  I'm really impressed that the guys just don't add guitar work to be self indulgent.  They wrote the songs and gave them exactly what they needed, and Speed sounds insane.

Fuck, this is only the first disc, I haven't even heard the second disc yet.  Great value for the price too.  About time a band did a double album and not this release one album and then release one 4 months later so you pay double.  Soilwork obviously don't take their fans for granted.  Looking forward to getting into the second disc.

Yea i have to agree on the guitar work, very solid stuff and the solos are some of their best work yet.

Some highlights:

1. I really dig the simple verse riff on Tongue.
2. The chorus on Vesta.
3. As a drummer i can vouch for Dirks talent behind the drums, insane stuff! (side note: check out his other band Scarve, even more insane!)
4. Spectrum Of Eternity may be their best song in their entire catalouge.

Also, the instrumental section of Tongue is mindblowing and something the band have never really done before.

I have the last week spent more time with disc 2 because for some reason I automatically kept putting on disc 1. There are some really strong songs that have grown on me on disc 2 like Leech, The living Infinite II, Paradise Blues, Long Live The Misanthrope and Rise Above The Sentiment. The intro riff on Leech and the song in general just blows me away everytime! It has the best song structure on the album imo.  :metal

Wolfking...you may be right, this disc may actually top the first.  :)

I'm torn between the discs to be honest.  Number 1 is just straight forward Soilwork, but disc 2 is more experimental but perhaps has more to offer.  This is my album of the year so far.

I love the guitar leads in RATS at 2:32-3:05. Starting with harmonies into a black metal riff and ending with a kick-ass solo.

That's probably my fav from the whole album, and seriously one of the best things the band have ever done.

To celebrate our October 18th show at Tokyo’s Loud Park festival, Avalon/Marquee is releasing a special limited edition EP entitled Beyond The Infinite! It contains five unreleased tracks from The Living Infinite sessions and was recorded, mixed and mastered at Fascination Street by Jens Bogren and Johan Örnborg. Yes, this release is for Asia only, and no, we don't when these tracks will be available elsewhere.

Beyond The Infinite tracklist:
1. My Nerves, Your Everyday Tool
2. These Absent Eyes
3. Resisting The Current
4. When Sound Collides
5. Forever Lost In Vain

Judging from the comments, a lot of people are not very happy about this release in Japan only.

Damn right!  I'm sure these tracks will surface online, but I'd happily spend my cash on it if they released it worldwide.

It's not really in the same league as TLI, but I really enjoyed it.  It didn't really live up to the hype of Peter coming back and is nothing like old Soilwork, but it's worthy of a purchase IMO.

The Akuma Afterglow was the song that got me hooked in Soilwork! There are other excellent songs as well like: Night Comes Clean, Enter Dog of Pavlov, Two Lives Worth of Reckoning and Let This River Flow.

IMO, its up there with their best albums with The Living Infinite and Natural Born Chaos

Great to see positive opinions on it.  I've been into Soilwork since NBC, so I'll always be into their older stuff more than the new stuff, that includes TLI.  I think it's definitely their best in a long time, but over time, it still doesn't top Chainheart, NBC or APP for me.

Glad to see some old timer fans! :tup I myself have been a fan for a long time. I even saw them in a small club during the APP era with roughly 40 in the audience. I was a big fan of their older drummer Henry Ranta back then, Dirk is in a league of his own though and I was pretty damn excited once I heard Dirk was doing session work for Soilwork.

SbS, TCM and APP have a special old school flair to it compare to their other albums. The songs and style is a bit diffrent and the production is more organic with less editing than NBC and future albums. I love APP, NBC and FNF. With that said I do like some of their newer albums especially their latest which I think is their magnum opus. Just the fact that it's a double album with basically no filler tracks is pretty damn unique in the MDM scene.

It was 1993 when I bought Carcass Heartwork that was my first 'extreme' metal album.
But it would have been Bodom's Something Wild that was my first proper MDM album.

Back to Soilwork, how is Sworn To A Great Divide?
I've read a lot of negative things about it, some even says it's their worst?

I really liked it, there's a lot of great catchy songs on it.  It probably would be their weakest, but that is just cause their discography is so strong.  Actually, I'd have to re-listen but there's a chance that I would take it over TPB.

Also, I listened to Stabbing the Drama yesterday and forgot how much of a cracking album that one is.

So, I used to quite like Soilwork back in the day, and enjoyed the three album run of Predator's Portrait - Natural Born Chaos - Figure Number Five (never really had any interest in their first two albums). I then lost interest years ago and didn't bother keeping up with any of their new material.

Discovered The Living Infinite recently and I really like it, so I got that and have been listening to it quite a bit - solid album. I'm just now going back over the albums I missed - I'm a few tracks into The Panic Broadcast and so far it's pretty good as well.

Based on various places, it seems the other two are not very highly regarded. Should I lower my expectations a bit for those?

what?! i understand skipping Steelbath Suicide, but The Chainheart Machine is easily their best after TLI. so many classic songs, especially the run of — actually, i can't decide if i like "Bulletbeast"/"Millionflame" (top five!)/"Generation Speedkill" or "Possessing the Angels"/"Spirits of the Future Sun"/"Machinegun Majesty" the most! either way the only lesser song is the one between those runs, and i'll admit the last song is a bit lackluster. overall it's totally solid and easily just as good as APP.

Lol sometimes you come over strange but funny tidbits like this:

Quote
Will Smith is supposedly a huge fan of the Swedish well-known (but barely known in the U.S.) melodic heavy metal band Soilwork.

and I found this interview with Strid:

Quote
I heard you guys became friendly with Jada Pinkett Smith. Is that true?

Believe it or not, she was the least rock star on the entire festival. She was cool, hanging out all the time, fixing BBQs by their bus. She really digs hard music. Even Will Smith, when he was out there, he would always hang out a lot by the bus. Just hanging with Jada, listening to Satyricon on the stereo. That was really weird. You wouldn’t expect that from her. She is such a cool person, and everyone else in the band liked her too.

For a band pretty late in their career to put out a double CD of this standard is astonishing.
Everything about it just clicks, the songs, playing, production, mix, it's almost flawless.

Honestly, The Living Infinite. I know starting with a double album sounds nuts but trust me, if you like the new song, you'll go crazy for all of TLI!

Even if you just pick one disc for the first while. Doesn't matter which.

To be honest, if you haven't already just check out there previous release The Living Infinite. It pretty much got everything that Soilwork does great imo. Wanna go old school check out Steelbath Suicide, The Chainheart Machine and A Predator's Portrait which are a bit more raw and thrashy. Natural Born Chaos and Figure Number Five have a much cleaner production and more melodic, straight forward and "mainstream" sound but not in a bad way. Both those albums are in my top 5 if you'd ask me. When Dirk joined on Stabbing The Drama they kind of returned to the old sound but with a more refined production.

That new song sound's great, let's hope rest of the album is as good.

Also. i'm kinda bummed that Ola Flink chose to leave Soilwork. Along with Björn, he was the only other "original member". He was also a big part of the band's stage presence.

I'm very new to Soilwork but just listened to the single after seeing something about it on facebook. Really liking that song. Where would you guys suggest I get my feet wet?

I would also check The Living Infinite first, and then move to the older albums.

My top 3 would be:
1. The Living Infinite
2. Natural Born Chaos
3. The Panic Broadcast

Well, I dunno. The instrumentals on TLI and also "Owls Predict" are pretty split from the way the rest of the material works. Same for "Forever Lost in Vain," although that's more like they decided to just let their obvious influences come out for a song (Iron Maiden opening riff, Tool bridge!).

My point being that TLI has open doors for other directions, and I'm hoping they explore some of those with some of the new album too.

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. I've listened to the first disc of Living Infinite (will have to listen to the rest later) and I quite enjoyed it. There were plenty of memorable moments which I can now no longer remember- this album will be a grower- but on the whole it strikes me as very well balanced music. Good melodies, good pacing, high energy, not too aggressive, etc.
Title: Re: Soilwork Appreciation
Post by: wolfking on July 10, 2015, 06:19:12 AM
Dark Castle is right, I instantly thought of a few things from TLI.  This song could easily be placed anywhere in that album.  Seems like less variation compared to previous releases.  Soilwork always manage to tweak their style just enough so each album has it's own identity.  This song doesn't seem to do that that much, but it's so killer, it's not an issue for me.

Top 3;

1. Chainheart Machine
2. Figure Number Five
3. Natural Born Chaos/A Predators Portrait

I could take either for number 3.

It's hard to gauge from such short samples, but sound solid enough.  Seems like there's quite a lot of different stuff going on in this one from that.

The thing that hit me from those samples, is that they really have done a lot of work with the vocals.

Thanks again, to everyone, for The Living Infinite recommendation.

I've only listened to The Ride Majestic twice now, but it's made a really strong first impression on me. Can't wait to explore more of their albums!

The Ride Majestic is right up there with TLI and BTI. Now they're up to 38 (haven't heard the Japanese bonus yet!) songs with zero filler. Crazy.

This is my issue too.

Listening to the album again, it's good, very solid.  interesting that David Andresson has really taken a lead role with this band now along with Bjorn.  Slyvain only plays solos on a couple of songs, the ones he had a hand in writing.  I find this interesting as Soilwork have always been a pretty split two guitar duel band.

Fucking awesome song!

Having listening for a week now I can honestly say that the album respectfully lives up to TLI.
Yes TLI had more songs but this album feels so consistent with every song being interesting in some way.

Simply put: It's fucking awesome!!

Agreed. Super consistent album that didn't take long at all to grow on me. Quality-wise it's every bit as good as TLI.

In a way though it's kind of sad that so many original members have left but that's life, even though Soilwork has been on a roll lately I don't think they can get much bigger than what they are right now. Sadly I don't think being in a band like Soilwork pays as much as a regular day job in the long run, I don't know though, just speculating loudly.

I like EIF, the chorus is really nice. Some say the blast beats at the end are weird but I find it interesting in a good way. It's really hard making a blast beat to sound interesting without music and Dirk being the monster he is makes it feel alive, dynamic and groovy.

Here's a bit of a bold statement on a Sunday afternoon but I might goes so far and say that The Phantom might be my favourite song Soilwork has ever writen!  :omg:

Can't really give a solid answer on why but it just has all those great elements I like about Melodic Death Metal. It's fast, dark, powerful, epic, brutal yet uplifting, melodic, clean vocals but yet contain one of Strids most brutal vocal efforts i've heard. It reminds me of At The Gates and the "old school" Melodic Death Metal genre.

I just can't get that song out of my head!

Well, there's nothing really weak on the album, everything is good and to be honest, I just listen and don't even know some of the names of some of the songs.  The ones I do know I like are; both title tracks, Sulphur, Father and Son and Shining Lights I think it is.

What are your favourites on TRM?

I agree with wolfking in that there aren't really any weak songs on the album. The ones that go beyond very good, verging on phenomenal, for me seem to line up in tracks 3 through 7. Especially Petrichor by Sulphur. That's probably my single favorite, if I had to choose right now.

There really are, very few weak moments on TRM. Echoing Paths and Shining Lights are pretty mediocre, but rest is great

My favourites are: Whirl of Pain, Death in General, Petrichor by Sulphur and Father and Son. The bonus track "Ghosts and Thunder" is also excellent.

I really like this album, but it's still nowhere near TLI

I do wonder why they choose to spend money on a music video like that instead of just video recording a song in studio or on stage while touring, I mean they love to play live so why not do what they do best? I have a feeling more people would have enjoyed that than some random video of Bjorn singing in the desert.

There's this small moment in Petrichor By Sulphur during the last chorus when instead of going high pitch he screams the "Where I can't follow" part and I just love changes like that, in this case it just make the chorus more powerful.

I listen to it from time to time and it still a great album. Never thought they could top TLI but this album is more straight to the point and concise then TLI yet with the same song quality so every song seems to be interesting in their own way meaning there's no filler tracks. With that being said they still did an amazing job with TLI because despite having 20 songs I still feel there's no real filler tracks imo, at the very least the quality is better than what I would consider be the standard filler tracks.

Visionary Swedish metallers SOILWORK will release a special collection of rarities under the moniker Death Resonance on August 19, 2016 via Nuclear Blast Records.
Today, the band reveals the cover art created by MNEMIC guitarist Mircea Gabriel Eftemie (VOLBEAT, CARCASS, SCAR SYMMTERY, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD) as well as the track list for Death Resonance:

01. Helsinki (new song)
02. Death Resonance (new song)
03. The End Begins Below The Surface (The Ride Majestic Japan bonus track)
04. My Nerves, Your Everyday Tool (Beyond The Infinite Japan-only EP)
05. These Absent Eyes (Beyond The Infinite Japan-only EP)
06. Resisting The Current (Beyond The Infinite Japan-only EP)
07. When Sound Collides (Beyond The Infinite Japan-only EP)
08. Forever Lost In Vain (Beyond The Infinite Japan-only EP)
09. Sweet Demise (The Panic Broadcast Japan bonus track)
10. Sadistic Lullaby (re-recorded, The Panic Broadcast Japan bonus track)
11. Overclocked (2016 mix, Sworn A Great Divide Japan bonus track)
12. Martyr (2016 mix, Sworn A Great Divide Japan bonus track)
13. Sovereign (2016 mix, Sworn A Great Divide Japan bonus track)
14. Wherever Thorns May Grow (2016 mix, Stabbing The Drama Japan bonus track)
15. Killed By Ignition (2016 mix, Stabbing The Drama Japan bonus track)

Commented singer Björn "Speed" Strid: "The cover for Death Resonance is made by Mircea Eftemie and in many ways he managed to capture what we went through while recording The Ride Majestic: the sorrow, the close encounter with death, the aftermath and also the existential cogitation that came with it. It links those albums together, even though Death Resonance contains unreleased material from 2005 and forward. The cover almost seems like a link between life and death and not only captures where the band is right now, but also where we've been and what lies ahead."

I dig it, but the new song really points out the formula they've been using. Basically sounds like every recent Soilwork song.

I feel like TLI went out of its way to make each song different even though they overall used the same approach to the songwriting. This new one just sounds like every song on TRM.

Also, I wanna buy Death Resonance on vinyl, but given the revelation that NB are pressing the new Meshuggah box directly off the CDs, I dunno if I wanna buy any of their vinyl anymore.

I see what you mean but it's a formula that works great if you ask me. Both TLI and TRM is among my top Soilwork releases. This sounds fresh honestly even though it's a pretty basic song but i'm not expecting them to reinvent their sound for every album especially not when the two latest album have been such a success for them.

Soilwork has their own sound and style and I love it.

TLI has so much variety on it, some songs don't even sound like Soilwork.
I had my ipod on shuffle today in my car, a song came on and I had no idea who it was, and I check and it was a song of TLI.

I hope that Speed will do a side project or solo album one day, he has such an amazing clean voice and can scream with the best of them too.

Compared to a regular AU price CD the Japanese versions are not that more expensive.
Given the choice of only a few dollars I'll always go for the Jap version.

Yeah, that's shit.  I guess you have to go where the money is, so hopefully he can stay with them for a while.  Would be shit if he quits Soilwork only to last a year or so in Megadeth.

A blow for Soilwork too, but they have shown they can overcome these types of important lineup changes, so they will be fine.

Saw your post, instantly clicked Spotify and went ahead and listened Night Comes Clean and The Akuma Afterglow. Love this Band!

Soilwork was my introduction to melodic death metal, and other extreme metal in general. And while the extreme metal phase left me, Soilwork and couple of other bands stayed with me!

I should also catch up with Soilwork, since i haven't listened to them in a little bit. Pretty excited about the new Soilwork music that is supposedly coming next year!

That's awesome. :) I've listened to quite a lot of those styles as well, but nowadays I'm not such a fan of the typical 'overproduced' metal sound. Soilwork is one of the exceptions, even though an album like The Living Infinite has that typical sound. They're obviously good composers and vary quite a lot from album to album. Natural Born Chaos is another favorite of mine, possibly partly because of Devin Townsend's vocal production there. Black Star Deceiver is also such a good track (with guest vocals from Devin).

New single Full Moon Shoals is up on spotify.

That's a bit...diffrent but I like it.

Sidenote: Found a song i've never heard:

Forever lost in vain (https://youtu.be/TpA35wCTUSo)

Yeah, different but good!

This song and the likes of "Death in General" or "Antidotes in Passing" are perfect examples how their (Björn's) songwriting has matured over the last few years. I'm sure there are some aggressive songs on the album too! "Arrival" was pretty heavy so this bodes for a pretty diverse album.

Really like the song, though I would have never picked the opening riffs as Soilwork.

Wow, that was really something different from Soilwork.  At the start I wasn't so sure but by the end I realised how far their songwriting has come and they are having the knack in writing some really mature, well constructed memorable songs.

The record label however was very smart in releasing Arrival first though or else this would have people worried.

I kept forgetting that this video was out for Full Moon Shoals.  This is a strange song, but I like it.  The Night Flight Orchestra influence is seeping into Soilwork, but I don't think that's a bad thing.  Love the fast middle section.

Their songwriting really has advanced since The Living Infinite, and their lineup is incredibly strong despite some changes at bass and Bastian replacing Dirk.  Anxious to hear more from the new disc!

I hope Sylvain gets more solos on this new record.  Andersson has great solos and melodies but I like Sylvain's style a lot.  He only got like 3 or 4 solos on the Ride Majestic and that was the only negative for me, I wish it was more balanced.

I gotta say, I think David and Sylvain are my favorite guitar duo in the bands history! I loved Peter Wichers in guitar, but David and Sylvain have constantly delivered on the last two records. I also like the new guy in the drums. Filling Dirk's boots must have been difficult, but Bastian seems to be settling in really well.

Soilwork's lineup has changed more times than anyone can count, but I think they might finally have a really stable lineup in their hands. Ola Flink was really great in bass, so I kinda wish he was still around. But in the end, it's Björn's band all the way.

Yea the new guy is definitely a good replacement for Dirk. I'm a bit annoyed of how uptight his face and posture is, he looks so tense even though I know that's probably him being very focused. Just let lose a bit why don't you.  :lol

I have a full fledged man crush on Sylvain.  He was so much fun to watch when I saw them live two years ago, completely rocking out and raging while never missing a note.  They were completely on fire and crushed, despite playing a short headlining set.

Not that it's particularly hard too look up but if anyone wonders "Verkligheten" means Reality in swedish.

Anyway, i'm really interested in hearing Stålfågel (Steelbird) feat Alissa White-Gluz.

Yes, I'm also very excited for this album. Two songs they have released so far were rock solid.

Were Alissa White-Gluz and Dave Sheldon confirmed? There were some conflicting reports at first, when there was no mention of them in their official press release. Some other websites were first to report the inclusion of White-Gluz and Sheldon on the album..

I don't know what was up with that, but Tomi Joutsen, Alissa White-Gluz and Dave Sheldon are a killer lineup of guest vocalists!

I've heard the new album three times now.
There's a tonne of melody throughout, but enough heaviness to give it a pretty even balance.
The production is really crisp and mix sounds quite good too.

But no hint of anything NFO related at ll to my ears.

I've listened to it a few times too and like it so far - I actually like more of the stranger songs like Stalfagel than the typical Soilwork tunes like Arrival.  Need more time to absorb it, but it at least has be going back and listening to more of them after a while on the shelf.   :metal

Another rock solid album from Soilwork! :tup

It feels like they dialed back the heaviness just a bit from "The Ride Majestic". Sounds very close to "The Living Infinite" in terms of heaviness. Songwriting is probably the most mature it's ever been, if that makes sense. Way too early to pick a favorite track, because the quality is so even. There is not a single track I dislike.

Björn and Tomi have to perform "Needles and Kin" on their Soilwork/Amorphis joint tour. That song is a face melter! :hefdaddy

The fuck!!?!?!  If this is true, then I will have nowhere to go and purchase 97% of the cd's I buy and will seriously be a sad sad day as that has always been one of my favourite pasttimes and really such an end of an era in my life.  Ordering online is just not the same for me.  None of the other stores around Brisbane that sell cd's sell anything of what we like here on DTF.

Yeah that's fucked. They were the only retailer hanging on to CDs in any meaningful way here as far as I can tell, I know there's nothing else near me that is worth the bother. I do much prefer digital downloads these days (so I guess this happening is, in part, my fault, :lol) but sometimes I want something in lossless and can only find MP3 downloads online, or every now and then when I found that the CD is cheaper, so I would still get stuff from JB from time to time.

I've actually been going backwards through the discography since Chad's roulette after you sent a song. I don't mind the newer albums but was never too fussed about them, but I have discovered a string of really good ones through the middle. I still have to get around to the earliest albums, I think the last one I listened to was Natural Born Chaos.

I've been spinning this album a lot in the car the last two weeks.  I love it.  As MrBoom said a little different but the band are evolving nicely and really are continuing to focus on songwriting and it's paying off.

There's nothing here not to like.  They've really focused on great melodies too, like The Nuturing Glance and Ageless Whisper.  I love the more catchier commercial approaches with Stalfagel and Witan, both of those are amazing.  Needles and Kin is also by far one of the coolest songs they have ever done.  The 'unshed tears' section is one of the best moments in Soilwork history, it's fucking epic.  Master's Tale is Soilwork showing In Flames how to be In Flames.

And yes, the TNFO influences in this song are VERY apparent, but i'm not worried yet. :P

I'm sure that they will be on the next album.

I thought I read that new Soilwork won't be seen until 2021, so seems a bit pointless.  Unless I'm totally wrong.

If this is the case and no new album until 2021, then releasing these individual songs to keep the bands name in the 'spotlight' is perhaps a good idea?

Yeah I guess while they concentrate on TNFO.  I will have to find the article I read not so long ago.

SOILWORK - Death Diviner (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nPhoAscZdI&feature=emb_title)

I like the chorus alot but other than that nothing really new. Always nice hearing Soilwork though.

Pretty good song!

I read somewhere a while back, that they will release the "Feverish Trinity" EP when all the songs have been released. I wonder if that is still the plan?

These 3 songs are excellent! I’m not gonna lie, I‘ve heard the band because of TNFO and I like much more the Dave Anderson phase. Their last CD is their best to me.

I really like the EP title though "A Whisp Of The Atlantic".

Song was good imo!

Nice to have Feverish, Desperado and Death Diviner in one place along with the two new songs.

I don't remember where I saw this, but someone was claiming that the title track of this EP, was like 17 minutes long! Obviously take this with a heavy grain of salt, but if this is true, I'd be super excited to hear a Soilwork Epic! :metal

I keep dipping my toe in with Soilwork but these new tunes do nothing for me either. I felt the same about The Ride Majestic. I adore TNFO so am surprised I don't get enjoy more of it. I possibly just don't like the combination of styles in Soilwork. I don't feel any of those heavy yells or blast beats make sense in whichever one of those tracks they were in. They're a "heavy metal band", of course, but don't have any gravity to me.

In general, I'm pretty down on metal these days, so I might be a lost cause but what's their best album, if there is anything like a consensus?

Try their old stuff which is a bit different.  You could go Chainheart Machine for some straight ahead brilliant melodic death metal, Natural Born Chaos for some more melody or Stabbing the Drama which is somewhere in between.

Saying that, it was a big grower for me.  In fact, I don't think I've ever had an album that took so long to grow on me that turned into such a magnificant album for me.  Even now, I can listen to it and it still feels fresh.  It's consistent but a bit varied at the same time.  The two bonus tracks also I rate in the upper tier of the album too.  Both could actually be top 5 of the whole album.  Pretty close to a masterpiece if you ask me.

There's only the weird closing track of disc 2 that I don't like, rest is pure ear candy. The Living Infinite is probably my favorite too, but I also really love their latest album. The Ride Majestic is really good too. Now that I think about it, I don't think there is a single Soilwork album that I outright dislike. Even their "transitional crisis" albums: Sworn to a Great Divide and Panic Broadcast are good IMO.

Listened it once, and I had to start it again from the beginning immediately after! Superb playing and melodies throughout. And I love how Sven Karlsson gets a chance to shine with he's keyboards in several places here. He is almost always far back in the mix in other Soilwork songs, but here he gets to lead the song in several places.

I'm finding it a real grower. It's like Soilwork does prog metal. The first half builds up from something pretty middle of the road to something pretty intense, then the second half has a much more proggy groove that I'm really digging to then come back round to an intense final chorus.

The rest of the album is more standard modern Soilwork fare in terms of style but the quality is high once again, Death Diviner especially I'm just absolutely loving, my favourite on the album.

Man... Soilwork is a band that I've intended to check out more for a LONG time, pretty much since the release of The Living Infinite but I just never really got around to it more than a song here or there and I think I had checked out The Panic Broadcast. About a week or two ago I decided to put on TLI and I think I've had it on repeat since. It felt like I could tell right away that these were great songs but it took several listens to kind of dissect. I'm loving the album but even with a lot of material I'm hoping not to get burnt out on it. From here what album should I focus on next? What individual songs do you all recommend?  :yarr :metal

Awesome!

For me their peak was the next album The Ride Majestic so if you wanna keep on going try that before diving into their back catalogue.
I would probably check out these to begin with to kinda get a small taste of how their sound evolved. It's a fun run of albums where you get a taste of the old school and the more modern sounding Soilwork.

A Predator's Portrait (2001)
Natural Born Chaos (2002)
Figure Number Five (2003)
Stabbing the Drama (2005

If you like The Living Infinite (that was the first one that really hooked me in too), then I'd highly recommend exploring the rest of their recent output first, and I agree with Mr Boom that The Ride Majestic is their peak so that should be next. But The Panic Broadcast and their latest LP, Verkligheten, are also fantastic.

Once you've worked through those four, at that point I'd suggest doing what Mr Boom says and going back to A Predator's Portrait (their breakthrough album) and working forwards to see how their sound evolved to where they are in their last few albums.

I've been playing Natural Born Chaos again and it kicks ass. I much prefer the bassier, looser sounding production on it instead of the flat, more saturated streamlined sound of later records.

You know I have to agree that I too is a bit allergic to the streamlined modern day metal sound. It all kinda sounds the same in a way. Despite that TLI is just amazing to me, I guess mostly because the two albums before that was kinda meh for me and then suddenly they release a double album filled with bascially no fillers imo. Every songs is interesting in some regard.

There's lots of good stuff on TRM. Enjoying TLI more so far.

I think the overuse of a wall/call-and-response of dry/hoarse screams is incredibly generic and makes me roll my eyes so hard it hurts. (Eg: "the ride majestic... (MAJESTIIIIIIIC)) Pantera starting doing it in their later stuff too so it's not particular to Soilwork. Strid's roar clearly has a bunch of power, though. They could use it much better.

But there's a lot of great music in both albums. TLI seems to have more singing so far. Fantastic leads and drumming.

Should be interesting to watch.  They have one of the more fascinating career evolutions of metal bands.  Too late in time to be properly part of the original melodeath scene, but incredibly influential on the trajectory of later branches of it.  A mid-career slump and member turnover, which in retrospect I think has aged better than expected because Speed continually proves himself to be an excellent vocalist, unlike a peer such as Anders Friden.  But regardless, an eventual righting of the ship and to me a rare case of their best album being in their second decade and with newer members on The Living Infinite.  Losing Verbeuren a few years ago seemed a potentially fatal blow, as I wasn't crazy about Verkligheten, but the A Whisp of the Atlantic EP last year was quite surprisingly full of interesting ideas and may have revitalized them yet again.

Natural Born Chaos is sooo good. That, and Figure Number Five are at the very top of my list. Since then, to me, they had pretty decent to 'meh albums. Ups and downs like many bands.

Interesting that you consider FNF one their top two albums, it's certainly not an opinion I see very often.  It was trashed a lot in the 00s, but as I alluded to, I think those judgments hold less water now in comparison.  I quite like it, but it's a bit too slow for my tastes.

FNF was my first taste of Soilwork and was actually my fav for a while.  It's probably still top 3 after Majestic and Chainheart though.  Sure it's more commercial, but I think it's very focused and consistent with great melodies and some cool riffing.

I got into Soilwork around 2010 when Panic Broadcast was coming out, and through that I discovered Stabbing the Drama (Which was my favorite for a while) and FNF.

Nowadays I still consider The Living Infinite as my favorite Soilwork album, but Verkligheten is also probably in my top 3. I can't wait to see what is in store for Soilwork next! They have never made a bad album IMO.

I also just saw that Act Of Denial dropped their record out of nowhere, at least to me. CD release in the US is next month. That's the project with Speed and Steve DiGiorgio. Picking that up as well.

Just saw that A Whisp of the Atlantic is getting a CD release. I'm pissed and excited. Pissed because I bought it lossy and excited that I get to have a physical copy.

I also just saw that Act Of Denial dropped their record out of nowhere, at least to me. CD release in the US is next month. That's the project with Speed and Steve DiGiorgio. Picking that up as well.

Yeah, I'm glad it's finally getting a CD release.  I'll get that now.

Forgot about that Act of Denial.  The one song they dropped ages ago was killer.  Will look into that for sure.

Act Of Denial - quite an appropriate name for this project.
The music is prime Chainheart/Predators/Chaos era Soilwork, almost down to a tee.
With Bjorn Speed on vocals and the suitably charged riffage, the comparisons are almost undeniable.
But sometimes it's just a little too much in places, not that this is nothing but a bloody good melodic death metal album.
I will say that the song writing is a step below Soilwork, so are some of the vocal melodies.
That said this is still a high quality release and enough to tie us over to the next full length Soilwork release.

Soilwork confirmed in the latest episode of the interview series, that they are working on a new album! :tup And it looks like they are pretty far along, could we see a release this year or early next year?

I think they also confirmed that bassist Rasmus Ehrnborn is a permanent member now.

AWOTA is going to be tough to beat, such a killer song and EP.

You know what, I finally gave this EP a proper listen yesterday and I think it's fucking phenomenal.  Everything about it is perfect, and the production is so punchy, clear and strong.  Amazing songwriting on all of these five tracks.  Very happy this is getting a CD release.

It's amusing to me that it's an EP, but it's almost 37 minutes long.  By comparison, some "albums" like Reign In Blood are only 29 minutes long, some even much less.
Title: Re: Soilwork Appreciation
Post by: wolfking on September 04, 2021, 04:35:43 PM
Even by today's standards, 45 minutes for an album is common and it's not far off that.

That riff in Nothingness and the Devil is so simple but so fucking amazing.  The guitar tones here are ridiculous.

Also, it sounds like Sylvain is taking most of the solos here, that's a good move IMO.  He has copped the raw deal in terms of solos but I think his playing is much more creative than David's.

David is an amazing songwriter, as he has written some of the greatest tunes on the recent Soilwork albums. A Whisp of the Atlantic epic was all he's idea, for example. He is a capable guitar player also, but I think he is a better songwriter than a he is a guitarist.

Sylvain on the other hand, is an amazing lead guitar player!

Can't wait for the next album!

Well don't I look like an idiot.  In the credits it's says all guitars by David Andersson.  :lol

I was right about him coping a raw deal then at least haha.  I can hear it now that it's David but there's still some elements in what he's doing like he's almost channeling Slyvain.

I'm hoping the new direction is closer to A Whisp of the Atlantic than to Verkligheten.  I initially bemoaned the loss of Dirk and feared that their later career resurgence had already come to an end, but AWotA was surprisingly great (have I watched too many State Farm commercials?).  I'm still not sure Bastian has his finesse and creativity, but it's more auspicious now than it was for me in '19.

It would be really interesting for Soilwork to do a full on prog-metal album.  They've had hints of it at times, and the title track of the last EP was pretty damn close to one.  The first single for the new one was just alright, maybe it'll grow on me, and hopefully there will be other tracks I dig more.

Late to the party with "Nous Sommes La Guerre", but it has grown on me a bit!

I wasn't sure on the first listen, but it got a bit better on subsequent listens. Still not crazy about it, but I'm all for some variety on a Soilwork record.

And while I don't think the song as a whole sounds like TNFO, the intro with the women whispering is ripped straight out of TNFO! :lol

It's like a combination of a mellower version of around 12:00-13:00 into "A Whisp of the Atlantic" with NFO.  I don't mind a bit of this on the album, but hopefully it's not a sign of a major shift in sound.  The whole point of NFO is for that to be a side project where Speed can explore some of his other influences.  My favorite Soilwork songs are almost always the ones with thrashy verses and catchy choruses, and I wouldn't want to lose that.  I guess that's how Opeth fans feel about Opeth in the past dozen years as well with the non-metal influences dominating the metal ones, but I dig the retro prog more than the AOR disco rock, though it has its moments.

First pass through it was just ok until the violin/piano outro, which saved it a bit.  Maybe I'm just a philistine, but I'm not crazy about bands doing these short films that have no connection whatsoever with the group.  As hackneyed as they are, I'd prefer a "band in a warehouse" video.  Or at least intersperse shots of the band playing with the film.

New album is out this Friday, and some reviews have come out. Decided to check some of them out.

From what I read, it seems like another solid Soilwork record. Multiple outlets said that it's a very diverse album with classic Soilwork bangers, as well as some songs with clear "Night Flight" influences. I think someone described "Death, I Hear You Calling" as the most "Night Flight" sounding Soilwork song ever.

Final song was described as a "Mini epic" clocking in at 7.30 min. Multiple people said that "Electric Again" and "Vultures" were the best songs on the album, apparently the heaviest as well.

I think, I'm ok with "TNFO" influences creeping into Soilwork music. As long as we still get classic Soilwork bangers, and their core sound is not compromised, I'm good!

Excited to hear this!

Had a listen to Övergivenheten today while on a long drive!

A lot to take in, and I'm going to have to do repeated listens. First and foremost, this is still unmistakably Soilwork! They try some new things, but it never strays far enough to be unrecognizable IMO. This to me feels like a pretty logical continuation from "Verkligheten".

This Godless Universe, Vultures and Is it in Your Darkness are early favorites. A lot to take in on first listen!

Title: Re: Soilwork Appreciation

Although a lot to chew, my first impression already is that this is an incredible album and I'm happy they are diversifying their sound a little more, without losing personality/integrity. It indeed seems a natural evolution from Verkligheten, but also incorpoarting A LOT from Whisp of the Atlantic.

I'm only on my second listen and it's going to take a lot more to absorb this record.  14 songs is a lot!

Death, I Hear You Calling is my immediate favorite.  I love the riff and groove of that song, even though it's not the full-on Soilwork that I typically latch onto (Stalfagel is still my favorite from the last record and that's a drastic departure for them).

Has another listen today in my car, I'd give it a solid 8/10.

The rest could be 'bonus' tracks or a limited edition disc.
That said it's still a banging album with lots of interesting twists.

I've had 3 listens now and I'm not sure.  Not quite feeling it yet.  There's quite a few songs on here that are pretty bland, weak and quite forgettable.

The singles are all fantastic though.  Great catchy tunes.

"Övergivenheten" didn't blow me away on first listen, but this album is the definition of a grower!

I like it more every time I spin it. it's going to be a while, before I can attempt to rank it in their discography though.
Title: Re: Soilwork Appreciation
Post by: LithoJazzoSphere on August 27, 2022, 07:35:19 PM
I listened to it within a day or two of it coming out, but I'm gonna need more listens and time to process it.  The singles were ok but didn't really connect with me, and only one song on the full album so far really resonated with me ("Vultures").  Even the middle portion of the solo for that song feels really stilted, but the chorus is pretty addictive, it has some nice riffs and blasts, and I love the chilled out dorian ending.  Overall the album feels like B-sides from the prior album mixed with NFO so far, but it does seem like the sort of album that will unfurl itself eventually.  Teleporting someone from '00 when they'd just released TCHM to hearing this would be a real mindfuck.

Edit:  "Death, I Hear You Calling" is probably the second standout so far now that I'm skimming the album again a bit.

Got my first full listen in. Was surprised, is mostly what I can say so far. I agree this will need some more listens. Seems Speed is saving the brutal stuff for Act Of Denial because there was very little 'Death' here in terms of Melodic Death Metal. This album is kind of all over the place. Just need to get used to it.
Title: Re: Soilwork Appreciation
Post by: wolfking on September 04, 2022, 03:35:40 AM
I've had a few spins now and it's definitely a grower.  A lot of the tunes I thought were weak and while some lack memorable melodies, each is opening up quite nicely.  Slyvain only getting one solo is a joke, but I guess he doesn't write anything.  That's one thing this whole thing lacks, memorable guitar work.  They are a different band now and not focused on that aspect but a few more rippers would have beefed things up a bit.
Title: Re: Soilwork Appreciation
Post by: LithoJazzoSphere on September 04, 2022, 12:21:23 PM
It's kind of like a version of what they went through in the mid-00s around the time of FNF.  They were tired of being a "guitar solo band" and de-emphasized them for awhile.  But they eventually came back.

Just read from both Soilwork and TNFO Instagram pages, that David Andersson has passed away! :( :(

What an awful loss for both bands! Primary songwriter for both bands during the last 10+ years. Guy who is responsible for some of my favorite music of the last decade. Going to blast Soilwork and TNFO all night for his memory.

Brings the lyrical themes of the latest Soilwork album into new focus. :(

What a tragic turn of events.  His songwriting was what brought Soilwork back to life and into a brand new era.  The Ride Majestic has become one of my all time favs, a perfect album with incredible songwriting.  This is just tragic.

I kind of have the opposite opinion on the album now, I think the whole thing is fantastic.  Put it back in the car due to the tragic news yesterday but it keeps opening up.  The songs I thought were bland, weak and forgettable, now I think are mature, creative and very interesting and have great replay value.  Reminds me of the Ride Majestic the way that album took a long time to open up but became brilliant.  It won't beat that album, but it's better than Verkligheten.  Not sure how it rates against Atlantic yet though.

This passing though is hitting me harder than one has for a while, not sure why.  :(

I'm so disturbed over this. Alcohol and mental illness was the cause and it crushes me knowing he was a sufferer. The "Invisible Monster" has taken another life.  :| :(

Yeah it's shocking it got that bad that he had no control and he's no longer here.  Such a smart guy but what a demon to take to the grave.

It seems a lot of extremely talented musicians have their demons, DA will be sorely missed by all.
Totally forgot about the band's November AU tour, looking forward to finally seeing them in the flesh.

Has anybody heard this?

This is a song from the "Metal: Hellsinger" video game, and Björn is providing vocals for this one!
Damn that was intense, that could almost be a Soilwork song! A ****ing fantastic Soilwork song! :metal

That whole soundtrack from the game and the game itself is amazing!

Saw these guys last night.  It was a wonderful show.  I'll be honest though, I hated the setlist.  I like new Soilwork but the amount of new stuff didn't sit well with me.  Only Bastard Chain, Nerve and Stabbing the Drama in the way of old stuff.  I think it needed more balance.

Must say though, Bjorn was incredible.  His vocals were on point and he's a great front man.

That's disappointing to have so few old songs. How long was the setlist?

Lucky to be an hour and a half.  16 songs I think.  After those 3 songs I think 5 from the new one, 3 from Verkilighten, 3 from TLI, 1 from Ride and 1 from Atlantic.  Ending the main set with Death Diviner and closing the show with Stalfagel was fucking strange.

This was the set from the night before;

Övergivenheten
This Momentary Bliss
Stabbing the Drama
The Living Infinite I
Is It in Your Darkness
Electric Again
The Living Infinite II
Bastard Chain
The Nurturing Glance
The Ride Majestic
Harvest Spine
Death Diviner

Encore:
Nerve
Arrival
Valleys of Gloam
Stålfågel

Only difference is they swapped VOG and TRM, but VOG came mid set.  I almost didn't go due to this setlist as I was on 13 days in a row for work but glad I did.  It was funny, a lot of people around me seemed to really take to the new stuff.  The reactions were somewhat similar to the likes of Bastard Chain.  It was weird.  If I just got say two more, like a Follow the Hollw and Rejection Role, it would have made all the difference.

The Live in the Heart of Helsinki DVD/CD had a pretty stellar setlist, including at least a song from every album.  They seem to have totally ignored the first two albums these days.  I guess the connection with the Night Flight Orchestra has drawn in a lot of fans who wouldn't care for their harsh-only material.

I think you could be onto something here.  There were more females there than I thought they'd be an I just kinda got the feeling not many were really concerned with the lack of old stuff.

I mean, not even just women, growl-hesitant guys like 425 dig some of their more recent material, and probably wouldn't really be into The Chainheart Machine.  I think there might be a song or two on the album this year that my parents might be ok with (even Pain of Salvation was too growly for them growing up).

Eh, I can't complain, I'm glad I saw them, they were tight and put on a great show regardless.  Funny though, Bjorn only mentioned something briefly about David while the band were playing the start of The Nurturing Glance.  Before it kicked in Bjorn said something like, "here's a song written by one of the best song writers in the world, David Andersson, may he RIP."  then it kicked in.  I thought there would have been a spoken segment between the songs but it was very brief.

Given the fact that the band played all but 3 songs from the new era, it will be interesting to see where they go from here now David is gone.

Also, Slyvain has a great stage presence and decent feel and solos on his parts, but the new bloke was very ordinary in his guitar playing.  Nothing wrong with it, just very run of the mill and nothing special, yet did his job.

I saw them in 2016 and was front row for most of the show.  I loved watching Sylvain - he was raging the whole night.  We had a decent setlist that night - I can't remember all of the songs, but they played these:  The Chainheart Machine, Bastard Chain, Follow the Hollow, Rejection Role, Overload, Stabbing the Drama, The Crestfallen.  Then there were 2-3 songs from Living Infinite and at least The Ride Majestic, if not one more from that disc.  They also played Late to the Kill, Early to the Slaughter and Two Lives Worth of Reckoning.

I give them credit for committing to the new stuff, but I'd be bummed about the set too if they played 8 songs from the last two and barely any older songs.

Interesting, Simon's done some pretty good work in the past.  Satariel's Hydra, Edge of Sanity's Crimson II, plus other things from The Project Hate, Tiamat, Witchery, Wolf, and others.

Huh, didn't know the Crimson 2 reference.  I though Mike Wead did all the leads, looks like I'm wrong.  To be honest, I know nothing about him.

I'm not saying he's a bad guitarist, just didn't wow me last night.

Looks like an amazing set.  I'm thinking maybe all the new stuff is a tribute to David, but a lot of the songs played last night were Bjorn songs so not sure.  Maybe they are just starting to turn into In Flames with the song selections.

It's not just about vocals. I listen to plenty of growls-only music and I have no real interest in the first two albums because I simply don't find the music interesting.

Yeah, I suppose everyone has different tastes.  Honestly it was probably my least favorite album of theirs for quite awhile myself (still not sure where it would rank now without thinking about it more), and it seemed my online circle was far more over the moon about it than me.  It has a level of speed and vocal aggression on some tracks that makes even At The Gates seem calm and restrained.  Still, it's hard to imagine fans of melodeath not being able to appreciate the melodicism of tunes like these, unless those clean vocal choruses are an absolute necessity.  It's grown on me a lot over time.

A harsh-only melodeath album needs some good acoustic guitar work to be perfect, but that's my taste.

I respect that and see where you are coming from.  I think that's one thing that made Chainheart really grow for me.  The vocals mixed with the type of metal behind it.  Not to mention a lot of bluesy guitar licks which made a great contrast again.

Honestly, I too am not a huge fan of Steelbath Suicide or Chainheart Machine. I like A Predator's Portrait much more.
It has the aggression of the first 2 albums, but also the identity of the later Soilwork albums, as Strid started to introduce clean vocals in the mix.

Soilwork are doing a Finnish tour in April, and I'm going to see them in a town near me! :tup

Yesterday I was at a Soilwork show, in a town called Jyväskylä!

First time seeing them live, despite being a fan for over 10 years now.

They delivered and then some! :metal Setlist was almost exactly the same as the one from the Australian tour. Only 3 songs from the 1998-2010 era. I didn't mind. It would have been nice to hear some more deep cuts, but I was satisfied!

They are a seriously well oiled machine! Björn's vocals sounded great.

Yeah, I still am super impressed how good they were, especially Bjorn.  Incredible, dominating frontman.

Hopefully more variety in the sets in future tours but the new stuff did come across well.
