Title: IT'S BACK!!! Choose Your Own Nightmare II: Scenes From A Memory *UPDATED 8/8/11*
Post by: Genowyn on February 01, 2010, 07:34:23 PM
EDIT:  It took me long enough, BUT WE'RE BAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I got bosk1 to edit out most of the posts that are not story narrative, but I kept in some of the posts that show people how to play the game and how people solved some of the puzzles.  But the thread is now more streamlined, so it will be easier to go back and read the story and figure out where we are.

For those who are new, just jump right in now and go back and figure out the story later.  If you wait and try to read it all before playing, you may never start.  JUST READ THE FIRST FEW POSTS, THE LAST FEW, AND THEN JUMP IN AND PLAY!!!

The rules are simple:  You are in a world that is growing, changing, and being created before your very eyes.  I give you the options, you choose which one you want to see unfold.  As you do, this place becomes a product of my mind and yours (and, of course, DT has some influence as well).

Now, choose your own nightmare...

====================================================

You are sitting at a table in the outdoor lunch area at school having lunch with some of your friends listening to your MP3 player.  It's Friday, just another day, and you can't wait for school to be over because you are talking about your plans for the weekend.  As you are talking, you notice a strange movement like a dark figure moving in the bushes out of the corner of your eye.  Every time you turn your head to look directly at it and get a better view, it disappears.  You also get the feeling you are being watched.  This happens several times, but you see nothing to be alarmed about, even if you do find it a bit odd.

After a few minutes, your friends leave as you stay behind and finish the last bit of your lunch.  You feel a tap on your shoulder, interrupting your train of thought.  You turn around quickly, smiling, expecting to see your friend Derek, who was the last of your friends to leave the table before you.  As you do, the song that was playing on your MP3 player, A Nightmare To Remember, suddenly crescendos in volume, and then abruptly cuts off leaving only static.  You see a robed figure dressed all in black standing before you with its arm outstretched.  You try to look at its face, but it is wearing a hood that covers its face in shadow.  Its "hand" actually resembles a bear claw more than an actual human hand.  In its hand, it holds a envelope that appears to have a card or note inside.  You take a deep breath and let it out slowly.

You reach out to take the envelope.  As your hand touches it, it feels like ice, and a shooting cold stabs up your arm.  Although your mind tells your hand to let go of the card, you cannot.  You appear frozen in place, but the world around you, including the mysterious shadowy figure, turns to liquid, then begins to blur, and then to melt away.  The only thing you hear is the static, which grows louder and louder, and the sound of a scream inside your head that sounds like your own voice.  You black out.

***

You awaken lying on a table in an unfamiliar place.  As you scan the room, you realize that you are in what appears to be a recording studio.  A monstrous drum kit, and various amplifiers, guitars, basses, and keyboards are in the room.  You look down at your arm, which seems normal again, and notice you are holding the envelope.  On the east wall is a door, which you cannot see through.  On the south wall is a window with what appers to be a darkened control room.  On the west wall is a door.  On the north wall, you see five pictures hanging there.  The first is a picture of a camel.  The second is a man whose mouth appears to be bandaged up.  The third is a bear.  The fourth is the dark outline of a man with a conical shaped hat, possibly that of a sorceror.  The fifth, simply a hole in the ground with a shovel next to it.  Although the place looks normal enough, everything about this place just doesn't feel right.

Do you:
A) Open the envelope
B) Look around the room
C) Head east.
D) Head west

So, this works by choosing an option every time you want to move the story forward? I never was a part of the last thread and I want to make sure that that is the rule. :)

Also, A.

You turn the envelope over in your hands.  It looks and feels like a normal envelope, but when you try to open it, it begins to glow faintly and does not open.  As you continue to struggle with it, you think you hear a very soft sound, almost like giggling.  As you continue to wrestle with the envelope and it resists your efforts, you also grow more determined and tell yourself it is only a matter of time before you succeed.  As you do so, you fail to notice the envelope is growing hotter and hotter until you look at your hands and notice they are blistering.  You quickly drop the envelope on the floor.

Do you:
A) Continue trying to open the envelope
B) Look around the room

You gingerly pick up the envelope and notice it has cooled down and the glowing has faded.  You begin searching the room.  On one of the amps, you find several guitar picks.  No big surprise here.  Three of them have pictures of a salmon engraved on them.  The other appears to be a "Mike Stone" autographed pick.  You extend your nonblistered hand and pick them up.  You move on and notice a white board with what appears to be various numbers and song titles written on it.  You don't pay too much attention and move on.  Under a small table, you find some strips of cloth and take them.  What now?

Do you:
A) Continue trying to open the envelope
B) Look around the room more
C) Head east.
D) Head west

As you approach the east door, you notice there is the typical "EXIT" sign on the wall above it.  But then something changes.  Right before your eyes, the letters in the word "EXIT" begin to run together.  New letters form, spelling, "You shall not pass."  The door begins to shake violently as you approach it.  You also hear a voice whisper "don't do it!  Please, don't do it!"  You look around, expecting to see someone, but then realize the voice is coming from inside your own mind.  Then you hear another.  "Go ahead.  See what happens.  Remember what happened to the cat?  Go on and try it."  With each step, another voice is added, then another, until the voices are a veritable war inside your head.  The door looks as if it is about to burst under the stress of all the shaking.  You stop just short.  Something tells you this might not be a good idea.

Do you:
A) Try the east door anyway.
B) Head west

You head out the west doorway and find yourself in a hallway that extends to the south with a series of labeled doors.  As you do, you think you faintly hear whistering in your head saying, "yeah, that's what I thought."  The door you just came through is labeled "Studio X."  The next door is labeled, "Studio X Control Room."  The third "lunch room."  The fourth, "game room."  The fifth has a window and appears to lead outside.  There are several music-related posters on the wall, including a Spiro Gyra poster and a golden poster that simply says "Score XX" on it.

Do you:

B) Try door #2

You try the door to the game room.  It is locked.  You backtrack and try the door to the lunch room.  It opens.  Inside, you see a refrigerator, a countertop with a sink and a microwave, and two small table and chair sets.  There is a poster of Gene Simmons on the far wall.  You have a subconscious strange sensation that it is watching you, but you see nothing unusual about it.  On the far table, you see a glass of water, a note, and a small metal case.  You look at the note first.  It says, "There is no need for instructions.  You already know what you must do.  Choose."

Do you:
A) Open the case
B) Leave and go somewhere else (say where)
C) Look around the lunch room some more.

You begin looking around the lunch room.  You open the fridge and see a pizza box, two tupperware containers, each with something unidentifiable with fuzz growing on it inside, and a half-empty bottle of ranch dressing.  You close the fridge.  You approach the poster.  As you do, your MP3 player begins playing "Doctor Love."  Otherwise, there is nothing unusual about the poster.  You spend a few minutes looking at it and trying to figure out the connection with your MP3 player, but you eventually grow bored and determine that these are just moments wasted.  When you turn back to the table, the note appears to have been slightly moved.  You come closer and look at the note, and notice that it has changed, and now says, "There is nothing else here that can help you get home.  The answer lies within the case.  Now choose."

Do you:
A) Open the case
B) Leave and go somewhere else (say where)
C) Look around the lunch room some more.

You open the case and see a blue pill and a red pill inside.  You glance back down at the note and see that it has once again been changed:  "You're not Neo.  But if you think you have what it takes, you know what to do.  Choose."  The water glass begins to jiggle slightly, making you uptight.

You take the red pill and wash it down with a swig from the glass.  You pause for a moment, waiting to see whether anything unusual happens.  Nothing does.  You leave the lunch room and go back out into the hallway.  As you walk by the control room, you notice the door is wide open.  You enter the control room, and the door slams closed behind you.  The room is dark, but you can see well enough because of the light shining through the large glass window from the studio.  There are two large soundboards with a chair in front of each, a computer terminal with what looks like a captain's chair in front of it and a large cracked mirror next to it, and a small stool with wheels.  There are various drawers.  Next to the computer terminal is a Starbucks cup.  To your surprise, you notice steam coming from it.  Your body starts to feel cold.

Do you:
A) Try to get out.
B) Sit down in the captain's chair
C) Sit down in front of one of the soundboards

You take a seat in the captain's chair and begin looking at the mirror, expecting something to happen.  The computer in front of you makes a soft "pop," and then you hear the whirring of a computer fan and the hum of the computer starting up.  You turn to look at the screen, which is completely dark, with the exception of a green cursor blinking in the corner.  You turn back to the mirror and continue to stare at it, studying how your appearance is reflected in each of the cracked segments.  You see movement out of the corner of your eye and whip your head back around at the words that are now on the computer screen.

>Will you please stop doing that?  I need your help, and I can't very well tell you what to do if you are staring at the mirror instead of the screen.  What exactly are you expecting the mirror to do for you?

You are surprised and quickly look around the room.  More words form onscreen.

>Over HERE.  I'm getting a bit impatient with you.

You hesitate, and then begin to type:  >Oh...sorry...It's just...Well, if I took the blue pill, I'd end up home, not remembering anything.  I took the red one, so I'm ready to get out of here and see what things are really like.  <ENTER>

The cursor flickers for a few seconds and nothing happens.  The words "Hahahahahaha..." begin to appear and rapidly fill the entire screen.  After a few seconds, the screen blanks again, and the following appears:

>Wait, you aren't serious, are you?  This isn't a movie.  That was just a test.  If you took the blue pill, you would be dead right now.  The only way to get out of here is to do what I tell you, understand?  I just used the red pill/blue pill thing because I knew it would be something you are familiar with.  Look, I didn't want to call you here, but I didn't really have a choice.  You know how these things work.  I can't let you leave until you--wait.  You look different.  Please tell me they didn't mess this up.  Please, please tell me it's you.  Please.  I hesitate to ask this, but...tell me once again.  What is your name?

The Kev's have it.

You hesitate, and then type in your name:  >Kevin Moore

There is a long pause, about 30 seconds or so, before more words begin appearing onscreen.

>Why am I not surprised?  Why, oh why, oh why, OH WHY?!  I was very clear.  I told them to bring me Nicolas!  I should have known.  Okay, look, Kevin, you seem like a nice enough person.  At least as far as people go.  Here's the deal.  I brought you here.  This is MY house.  And in my house are rules.  Some can be bent.  None can be broken.  You cannot leave until I say you can leave.  If you try, you die.  The enemies are not here, but there are certainly things to be afraid of, not the least of which is me.  There really is no way out of this place, other than the gates.  This place is not the destination.  It is merely the way place--the place where all five gates meet.  I can only unlock the gates for you if you bring me certain things.  The first gate is easy.  The others, not so much.  And I can only talk to you while you're here at the way place unless you find something that allows you to speak to me in those other places.  Otherwise, once I send you through a gate, you're on your own unless you live long enough to find your way back here.  I cannot stress how important this is.  If you do not follow my instructions carefully, you will die.  Do you have the coffee?

You type in:  >What coffee?  Before you hit the enter key, you think better of your decision and type:  >yes.  It is here.

The computer answers.

>Good.  He will be pleased, although he will not say so.  Then again, he doesn't say much anymore.  Then I can send you though.  Are you ready?

Kevin:  >Wait.  What if I don't want to do this?  What if I just get up and walk out the front door?

Computer:  >That way is blocked.  And you will die.  We've been over this.  This is not the place you once knew.  Things work very differently here.  Humans cannot live here.  You are alive only because I am keeping you alive.

Kevin:  >And if I help you, I will live?

Computer:  >Most likely, yes.  At least, *I* won't kill you.  If you help me, I won't.  I swear I won't.

Kevin:  >How do I know I can trust you?

Computer:  >You don't.  But you don't really have a choice.  Go to the first soundboard and turn it on, then turn the bass up all the way.  Don't stop at 10 or you might not make it through the gate.  These go to 11.

how come we keep losing HP :(

Because you are damaged.

You go to the soundboard, find the bass controls, and turn them up to eleven.  "What now?"

You realize you probably need to type in your response, so you sit back down in the captain's chair.  To your surprise, your question is already typed in.  The computer responds.

>Good.  Each of the gates will bring you to a place where there are lots of enemies who will try to stop you.  You have to find the keepers of the keys of each domain and bring them back here to me.  But make no mistake, it will not be easy.  They will try to stop us at all costs.  Remember that you are of little use to me dead.  This little game of ours is a dangerous one, and the tests are difficult.  Others before you have tried.  The tests have stumped them all.  I can't say too much more because we're running out of time.  Before you go, look in the top desk drawer to your left.

You open the drawer.  You see a tube of healing salve.  You take it.

>Drink the coffee.  The Silent Man will not accept you otherwise, even if you do make it through the gate.  But don't fall for his tricks.

Kevin:  >But where is the gate, and how do I get through it?

Computer:  >You will find the gate in the same place you used to get in here.  Lie down and close your eyes, and you will be transported through the gate.

Kevin:  >Wait.  What does that mean?

You notice the computer screen is now dark.  You are unable to type anything else in.  You think briefly about leaving.  But you drink the coffee first.  Starbucks.  Wow, even in this forsaken dimension, they have Starbucks.  You make a mental note to buy stock when you get home.  You then leave the control room and go out into the hall.

Do you:
A) Go back in the control room
B) Go back in the studio

I will slow down a bit after this (but not too much; as I said, people want it to move faster).  I basically had the "way point" scenario all worked out, and you guys kept posting, so I kept moving the game forward.  I still have to work on the next world a bit, so I'll pause the game before we move on to the next part.

You apply some of the healing salve to your hand.  You notice a cooling sensation, and the redness goes away immediately.  However, your left hand is now covered with vaseline-like healing salve.  Yuck.

You go back into the studio.  The table in the middle of the studio is glowing red.  You approach the table and look around.  "Is this what I'm supposed to do?"  No answer.  You lay down on the table.  As your head rests against the table, you hear a low bass note begin to resonate through you.  You close your eyes and begin to relax.  As the sound becomes more soothing and begins to resonate through your body, you take a deep breath and let it out slowly...

Suddenly, you hear a hissing sound above you.  You open your eyes and see that the light fixture above your head has broken loose from the ceiling and is swinging wildly by a thin wire, sending sparks flying around the room.  As the bass note grows louder around you, the light fixture breaks loose and falls toward your head.  You don't even have time to get out of the way.  It is about to hit you when suddenly everything becomes pitch dark and deathly quiet.  Although you cannot see or hear anything, you sense that you are somewhere else.  In your mind, you hear a sound like a metal gate being slammed shut.

The deathly quiet and total darkness seem overwhelming to you.  You try feeling around in the dark.  Apparently, you are lying in some sort of dry, coarse dirt.  Without warning, a tiny, pale sun quickly rises in the sky.  Wherever you are, it is not your solar system.  This "sun" is far too pale, does not give enough light, and moves too quickly.  If only you knew where "here" is.

You are facing east, and appear to be near the edge of a cliff.  The rock and the dirt around you are all midnight black.  You approach the edge and realize that there is nothing beyond.  As you scan the horizon, you see several black asteroid-like islands of rock, hovering in space.  They each appear to have a city in the center.  They are roughly disk-shaped.  Strange.  You examine the closest one to you.  Although it seems like it is a few miles away, you are eventually able to discern the figure of a person at its edge, staring back at you.  You try to yell out to it, but strangely, no sound comes out of your mouth.  In fact, you have not heard a single sound since you got here.  Not the sound of other things moving or communicating in the distance.  Not the sound of your shoes moving in the dirt.  Not the sound of your own breathing.  Nothing.  This place is dead silent.  You stand up as tall as you can and try waiving at the figure on the other asteroid.  It does the same.  Startled, you stop.  It stops.  You squint your eyes, trying to get a better view.  As you do, you realize the face staring back at you from across the void is your own.  You look around more carefully at the other asteroids and realize each is merely the mirror image of the one you are on.

You think through the events of the last few hours, just going over it all in your mind and trying to figure it out.  You start to feel immensely hopeless as you realize you are stuck on some rock, floating in another dimension or something, where you can't even speak, and you definitely can't get home.  Not without doing what some computer wants you to do.  Problem is, you don't even know what that is.  You feel your eyes begin to water, and you try to fight back what you know is coming, but give in as you feel sobs well up inside you.  "I'm just a kid," you tell yourself.  "I don't get this.  This is just...unnatural.  Why am I here?  Yeah, I lagged a bit after lunch and was probably going to be late to sixth period, but...you don't usually get shipped off to some crazy, acid trip just for being tardy to music class.  What is going on?  I just don't understand.  This is like a...like a...like I'm living in a video game or something.  It isn't possible."

"Yes it is.  Now stop being a coward and go do what you have to do."

You have no idea where this other voice came from, or how it got inside your head.  Startled, you look around.  You see no one.  The fact that it called you a coward sends you into a rage.  Your father used to call you that when he hit your mother and dared you to stop him.  And deep down, you felt that it was true, because you dared not lift a finger to stop him.  They've always called you a coward, and you've hated them for it.  More than that, you've hated yourself for it.

You wipe your face dry with your sleeve and scan the scene in front of you.  From where you stand, there is a road of sorts set with pale, gold-colored stones, leading from the place you stand to the city.  It looks like a long walk, but you can make it.  There are several buildings, all black.  In fact, everything in this place but the road appears to be black.  In the center of the city is a tower taller than the rest.  You see a light on all the way at the top.  It reminds you of a lighthouse.  "Follow the yellow-brick road," you say to yourself.  The reference almost makes you smile as you walk toward the city.

As you grow closer, the dirt becomes more fine, almost like ash.  The buildings have a charred appearance.  You try the first couple of doors, but they are locked.  You keep walking toward the center of the city, staying on the road.  Alleyways branch off to your left and right, and appear to arc in the same direction.  You quickly realize that the city is most likely layed out in a cirle, with the tall tower in the center.  The road you are on is a radius moving from east to west.  The alleys you pass are part of a network of concentric circles.  Before long, you come to a pile of debris in the center of the road.  It completely blocks your progress, and you can't see what is on the other side, other than something that smells really, really bad.

Do you:

A)  Try to climb over it.
B)  Take the alleyway to the north
C)  Take the alleyway to the south

You climb the wall of debris.  As you near the top, the sun has already begun to set and the twilight casts strange shadows that make it difficult to see, but you think you see what looks like the half buried body of a child at the bottom.  The stench grows stronger and stronger as you descend, like the smell of stale sweat and **** steaming through the night.  You are horrified at the thought that this could be a dead child, and begin hurrying down, stumbling and sliding as you go.  You reach the bottom and see that the dead..."thing" is not a child at all.  It is about 2 1/2 feet tall and wearing a black robe.  Half its face has been gnawed off by something, and the body is just beginning to show signs of decomposition.  It has thin, matted hair and an open mouth of razor sharp teeth.  You shudder and draw back, and again almost begin sobbing.  "I want to go home," you say to yourself.  You think you catch a glimpse of a sudden movement in the alleyway to the north, but when you look, you don't see anything.  You take a deep breath and tell yourself you have to go on.

Do you:

A)  Search the body
B)  Continue west toward the tower
C)  Go back east

You clean and wrap the hand and then begin searching the body.  Its right hand is clutching a small, rusty, but sharp knife.  You momentarily raise the knife to get a better look and then take it.  You find nothing else useful.

A)  Continue west toward the tower
B)  Go back east
C)  Go north

Can we see anything in any particular direction that might be worth checking out?  Picking randomly just isn't my thing.

To the west, far down the street, you see the tower.  Alleyways extend to the north and to the south, arcing around to the west so that you can not see far down either one.  Back to the east, you cannot see anything because of the rubble heap.  Blackened buildings of various heights line the narrow streets.  The sun is going down, and it will be dark very soon.

You continue east.  The sun is setting rapidly, and it is getting dark quickly.  You hurry.  As it turns from light to dark, you think you see shadows darting in your peripheral vision in the alleys you pass on either side.  It is almost pitch black, and you begin to run.  The only thing you see is the faint light at the top of the tower, which guides you like a lighthouse.  About two blocks short of the tower, you catch movement out of the corner of your eye.  it is too late to react.  Something smacks into your right shoulder and knocks you to the ground.  Quickly, it pounces and is standing on your chest.  It looks like the dead thing you found earlier.  In its left hand is some sort of glowing orb that gives off a pale light.  It screams, although you can hear no sound, showing you rows of razor sharp teeth.  Reflexively, you swat at it and knock if off of you.  It turns and prepares to pounce.

Do you:

A)  Fight (specify how)
B)  Run toward the tower
C)  Run east
D)  Run north

You get into your best knife fighter position, which feels very awkward since you've never been in a knife fight in your life.  "Uh...okay...bring it on," you say, momentarily forgetting that you are unable to speak in this world.  Although you do not hear a sound, as you utter the words, the dwarf creature narrows its eyes menacingly as if it understands.  It springs at you, and reflexively, you dodge and swing the knife wildly.  The knife misses, but before you can turn and prepare, you feel a sharp pain in your right leg as the dwarf creature sinks its teeth in.  You scream without a sound and drop the knife.  You also start flailing your arms about wildly and manage to connect with the side of the dwarf creature's head.  It lets go and jumps back, dropping its light orb.  It lunges for the orb, but then draws back as you pick up your knife and turn to face it once again.  Keeping your eyes on the creature, you bend down for the orb, reach for the profit of your prize, and scoop it up.  The creature pauses, then lets out another silent scream, and scurries off.  The orb flickers and goes out.  You aren't sure how to make it come back on again.  Your leg stings a little, but the bite doesn't appear serious.

Do you:

A)  Throw the orb away
B)  Continue toward the tower
C)  Go east
D)  Go north

You quickly wrap your leg and hurry off toward the tower, hoping you don't run into any more of those things.  About a block before you reach the tower, dawn begins to break once again, and you see a large piece of parchment nailed to a huge, rough stake driven into the ground.  The parchment reads:

NOTICE, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY
Due to the imminent invasion, proper curfew hours will be observed by all.  Anyone caught outside after dark will be severely punished.  Your individual devices must be properly secured at all times so they do not fall into the hands of the Enemy.

Strange.  You wonder who exactly this notice is directed at, since you have not seen a single soul since you got here, other than the thing that attacked you.  Otherwise, as far as you know, you've been walking through empty streets alone.  But in case there are more of those things, you quickly decide you can't take time to sit here and think about it out in the open.  You approach the tower and find that the door on the east side where you are standing appears to be locked.  Next to the door is a red button with a skull and crossbones on it.

Do you:

A)  Push the button
B)  Go back (west)
C)  Go around the tower to the north
D)  Go around the tower to the south

You begin circling the tower to the north (counterclockwise).  Its surface is like black obsidian, but it otherwise looks like a typical skyscraper, save that it has no windows on this floor that you can see.  When you get to the north side, you see a street like the one you entered, extending off toward the north.  You continue to the rear of the tower.  There is another, similar street extending west.  Again, no windows in the tower.  However, on this west side, you notice what appears to be a rope hanging down from some point up near the top, which you estimate is a good 20 floors up.  You come closer and inspect the rope and discover that it appears to be made of black human hair.  You laugh and shake your head, thinking to yourself, "this can't actually be real."  You think briefly about whether to climb the rope.  You recall that you are basically afraid of heights and that when you had to climb the rope in gym class, despite your gym teacher screaming at you and all the jocks in class laughing at you, you only made it about halfway up before the burning in your arms made you let go.  The rope burns and your pride healed at roughly the same rate.  Still, other than the door with the skull and crossbones button, you haven't seen anything else that remotely looks like an entrance.  As you are deciding, you think you see a small shadow out of your peripheral vision quickly dart across the street to the west.  Quickly it is gone.  Clearly, you cannot take the time to think about this forever.

Do you:

A)  Climb
B)  Go back to the door and push the button
C)  Go down the street to the west.
D)  Go back and take the street to the north
E)  Go back and take the street you came in on back east
F)  Keep Circling the building to the south

You take a moment to look around, and then sit down on the yellow road leading up to the door, put your head in your hands and begin to cry.  "This is stupid," you tell yourself.  "I didn't do anything!  I don't belong here!  This can't be happening!  I don't even want to go into this stupid building.  I just want to go home."  You decide you've had enough of all this, and you're getting out of here.  Maybe if you can get back to the edge of the city where you first came in, you can just leave.  You stare east, back down the yellow road, your eyes on horizon in a steady-set gaze.  You quickly begin to walk east, but before you take more than a few steps, you catch a quick movement out of the corner of your left eye.  You turn, and see a small pack of the dwarf creatures running toward you from around the corner of the building.  You look back east and see another small pack emerge from the closest alleyway onto the main street and begin to run toward you.  The look in their eyes tells you they believe they have you trapped.  You panic and turn and run, in sheer terror.  Forgetting the building was only a few feet behind you, you smack right into it and momentarily lose your balance.

On your knees, the red button is right at your eye level.  Everything about this place just doesn't feel right.  But then you think the red button may simply be a bluff since the stereotypically cautionary color coupled with the cliché skull and crossbones seems a little over-the-top as if calling you out to not have the balls to go through with it.  Maybe whoever put it there is right.  Maybe you don't have the balls to go through with it.

You quickly glance over your shoulder and see that the dwarf creatures are about to pounce.  You silently scream and smack the button.  The door opens and you tumble inside, just as it closes.  You hear several thuds and the faint sound of snarling through the door.  As you back up and rise to your feet, you survey the premises.  You are in the lobby of the building.  The door you came through is now at your back.  Directly in front of you is a security desk with a sign that says, "TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROMPTLY TORTURED AND LOCKED UP UNTIL EXECUTED.  On break, back in 5 min."  Beyond the security desk is an elevator bank with several elevators.  To the right of the elevators is a short hallway with three doors.  To the left is what appears to be a directory, which you cannot read from here.  The lighting flickers.  You think you possibly hear water trickling somewhere far away.

Do you:

A)  Go to the elevator bank and push the call button
B)  Go to the hallway
C)  Go to the directory
D)  Search the security desk

You step behind the secirity desk and begin searching.  There are several tv monitors showing various parts of the building you do not recognize.  You open a few drawers.  You see a half-eaten sandwich, which you leave alone.  You open a large drawer labeled "Trespasser Files."  There are various hanging folders.  You leave through a few and see some reports and some pictures of grusomely-mutilated corpses.  You quickly close the drawer.

You open another drawer and see a strange-looking piece of paper.  The surface of it is constantly moving and it looks almost alive.  The appearance looks somewhat like tv static, but is constantly swirling and shifting.  Across the top it says:  "MAP," and then under that, "Instructions:  please speak your location."  There doesn't seem to be anything else of interest.  As you start to leave the desk, you see an envelope on top of the desk that you would swear wasn't there a moment ago.  It says "open me, Kevin" on the front.  You open the envelope and pull out a note that says, "find all you need in your mind" messily scrawled on it.  You puzzle over the message for a moment, and then the note and envelope burst into flame and are incinerated.

What now?  Do you:

A)  Go to the elevator bank and push the call button
B)  Go to the hallway
C)  Go to the directory

You approach the directory.  It lists floors 7-22.  Most of the numbers have nothing written next to them--at least, nothing you can read.  Instead, you see deep gashes etched in the directory, as if someone carved out whatever was written with a very large knife.  The walls appear to be bleeding from these gashes.  The few entries that are left are:

17 - Diepen, Heven, & Associates, M.D.'s - Extreme Makeovers
18 - Wasteland - cell block A
22 - Ray Ning, CEO

As you ponder these entries, you hear the sound of a toilet flushing from down the hallway.

What now?  Do you:

A)  Go to the elevator bank and push the call button
B)  Go to the hallway

You stand where you are and continue contemplating the directory.  After about half a minute, you hear a door open and footsteps.  You start to think maybe it wasn't a good idea to stand out in the open.  Before you can react, a security guard appears from the hallway who looks only semi-human, even aside from the fact that he looks like he is about 8 feet tall.  He stops short, and for a moment, looks as started as you are.  He bellows, "You!  How did you get in here?  That door is foolproof!"

You respond, "Then I guess I'm just a fool cultivating my own nonsense."  You realize this probably was not the best way to respond, but you often joke and become sarcastic when you are frightened.

He begins walking toward you very quickly.  You take half a step back and bump up against the wall.  "Can I...can I just go home," you ask.

He responds, "You can go to hell," as he raises his arm over his head.  You close your eyes and only feel a moment of pain as he swings and your head separates from your body and rolls across the floor.

You are dead.

You enter the elevator bank.  There are six elevators.  The doors to five are open, but there are no elevators; only pits that you can't see the bottom of.  You press the call button.  Just after you do, you hear a door open and footsteps.

The elevator chimes, and then doors open.  Immediately after the chime, you hear a deep voice:  "Who's there?"

Startled by the voice, you quickly step into the elevator and turn.  From across the lobby, you see a security guard emerge from the hallway who looks only semi-human, even aside from the fact that he looks like he is about 8 feet tall.  He stops short, and for a moment, looks as startled as you are.  He bellows, "You!  How did you get in here?  That door is foolproof!"

You slam your fist against the "door close" button, and the doors snap together.  You hear a muffled thud as the guard hits the now-closed doors.  You hear the guard yelling, but cannot make out his words through the door.  You take a moment to catch your breath and start to reach for the "17" button.  The "P" catches your eye, and you think to yourself that you don't recall seeing that on the directory.  With a quick change of opinion, you instead press the "P" button.  You hear an automated female voice:

"Unauthorized.  Access denied."

The doors begin to re-open.

The guard lunges for you through the opening doors just as you again slam the "door close" button in a panic.  The doors snap closed, severing his hand, which falls to the floor a few feet from you.  Sick at the sight on the ground before you, you turn away momentarily and again try to get your breathing under control.  The shrieking on the other side of the door reminds you to get moving.

You press "17" and feel the elevator begin to move.  Before long, the LED indicator above the buttons indicates that you have arrived at the 17th floor.  The doors open, and you cautiously take a look outside, but don't see anything menacing.  You don't want the guard following you, so you press the "hold" button to keep the elevator on this floor (you're welcome), and casually step out, leaving the severed hand where is.  You are in an elevator bank with a frosted glass door to the south.  You do not see anything moving on the other side of the door and do not hear anything.

Your mind is still a wreck from what you saw in the elevator, but you cautiously push open the door to the south.  You are in a waiting room.  There is a window directly in front of you opening into a reception area beyond.  In large, gold lettering on the glass are the words "Diepen & Heven, M.D.'s."  To your right (west) is a door.  The furnishings seem very lavish for a typical waiting room.  There are several comfortable looking chairs and a coffee table with some magazines.  There are various brochures in a rack about plastic surgery and related procedures.  On the countertop in front of the window is a clipboard and a small sign that says "closed."  Next to the window on the wall is a placard designating the emergency exit routes, which makes you remember the "map" and try to remember whether you've been given any clues about how to use it.  (for Splent)

You ignore the map for now and begin looking around the waiting room.  You look through the magazines and don't see anything interesting.  Nothing else in the room looks overly helpful either, for that matter.  You are just about to end your search when you notice a woman's handbag pushed far back against the wall underneath one of the chairs.  You take it and begin searching through it.  Shoved in right on top of everything is a crumpled note written in what looks like eyeliner.  It says:

"I don't think I'm going to be able to get out of here, but I hope someone else at least sees this warning and is able to get away.  I had no idea what they do here.  They just took her in, and I swear they're going to murder that poor kid.  It's what they do.  Get out while you can.  It's my turn next."

You do another quick scan of the room, but don't see anything helpful.

You exit the waiting room and take a moment to examine the map and orient yourself.  You are standing in the east hallway just outside the doors to the waiting room and the file room.  You are startled by the sound of a phone ringing.  It is coming from inside the southernmost office.  You approach the door and hear a voice from the other side:

"Hello?  Yeah, I'm here.  I'm a doctor.  It's not like I work yoru standard nine-to-five, but I'm leaving after I finish up some of this paperwork.  . . .  Yes, of course I'm here alone.  Do you know what time it is?  That door gets locked at night by nine o'clock.  . . .  Oh, really?  Well, the way I see it, that's not my problem--it's yours.  I know all about your little project that you've got going on upstairs, remember?  And, frankly, ever since we entered into our little "partnership," all it's done is cost me business.  I'm happy to hack them up for you, but that's where our relationship ends, okay?  . . .  Wait--already?  But you said we've have more time before this place ended!  I can't relocate again that quickly!  . . .  Okay, fine!"

You hear the sound of a phone being slammed down.  Although you briefly thought about asking the doctor for help, you are beginning to think that might not be such a good idea.

You quietly enter the file room and see shelves full of what appear to be medical files.  You begin looking through some of the files and immediately notice that you cannot read them because they are written in a language you have never seen before.  The files also each contain various pictures, in roughly two sets.  The first set of pictures are of real people, with their faces (and in some instances, other parts of their body as well) marked up as if prepared for some sort of cosmetic surgery.  The second set can only be described as grotesque mutilations.

You flip through one file of a tall, attractive-looking young woman.  In one photo, she is holding a handbag that looks very similar to the one you saw in the waiting room.  You continue flipping through her file and come to the second set of photographs.  There are various pictures of what appear to be sawed-off limbs.  The last picture is of one of the dwarf-creatures you encountered outside in the city.  It has bloody fingerprints on it, and as you pull your hand away, one of the fingerprints smears and you realize the blood is still wet.  You drop the file and back away.

You wonder to yourself whether the blood is still flowing as you ponder your next move.

You enter Surgery Room A and your nose is immediately assaulted with the smell of decay.  Directly in front of you is what looks like a patient prep area that can be curtained off.  The curtain is drawn back and a set of clothes is neatly folded on the chair.  Over to the left is a larger, curtained-off area with the curtain drawn back.  Next to it is a small, movable metal table with a combination of what look like surgical instruments and implements of torture.  One particular items catches your eye.  It is a huge knife of some sort.  The wicked blade is the size of a commando knife, but is curved.  You ask yourself why such an instrument would be necessary in a surgery room, but aren't really able to formulate a reasonable answer.  You do, however, realize that such a thing could come in handy, so you take it.

As you do, you hear a soft rustling from behind the curtain.

Do you:

A)  Look behind the curtain
B)  Leave (say where to)

You slowly draw back the curtain and see a gurney with a severely mutilated corpse on it.  The stench alone almost knocks you to your knees before you can process what you are seeing.  What is left of the face and torso have markings drawn on them, and there are deep, rough gashes that look more like they were made by a butcher than a surgeon.  But what catches your eye is the movement in a deep gash that runs from the base of the corpse's throat to its navel.  The corpse itself is not moving.  What is moving are creatures that roughly resemble maggots, but are roughly the size of your index finger and have faces that are somewhat humanoid.  You involuntarily let out a slight yelp and take a few steps back, knocking over the instrument table, which crashes to the floor, scattering instruments everwhere.  The sudden noise apparently gets the attention of some of the maggot creatures, who interrupt their meal and stare at you.  One lets out a hissing sound and launches itself through the air at a speed that catches you offguard.  It sinks its tiny yet sharp teeth into your forearm as it lands, and you feel an intense stinging sensation.  You flail your arm madly, and it loses its grip.  You quickly stomp on it without thinking, and it squishes beneath your feet with a sickening "pop."

You try to control the fear you feel rising within you, but as soon as you showed it, a few others make the same hissing sound.  You can see about a dozen, total.

You make a dash for the door.  As you open the door, you see a man in a white lab coat with a surpised look on his face.  "What the--?" he exclaims, just before he hits you with something and you feel your body go limp as you black out.

...

You awaken some time later, laying on a gurney.  The room looks similar to the one you were just in, but reversed.  Your head hurts.  The doctor is standing over you, grinning.  "I didn't expect you to wake up so quickly.  I guess the best stories really do repeat themselves.  I'm not sure how you got in here, but in case you didn't notice, we're closed."

"Oh, right then," you say.  "My mistake.  I'll just be on my way."

The doctor's eyes narrow.  "You won't be going anywhere.  At least, not until after your procedure."  He picks up the knife off the instrument table, which is next to your head.

"Wh-what procedure?  Look--let me please explain!  It's all been circumstance.  I really shouldn't be here.  I don't even know what this place is or who you are.  How about I just go and we forget all about this, okay?"

"I'm the spider who spins his web.  And this is my parlor," he says menacingly as he uses the long, curved blade to slice open your shirt.  You aren't happy about this at all.  For one thing, your vintage Ozzy Osbourne concert shirt now only says "Oz" and "Zy."  He puts the blade down on the instrument table.  "But I suppose I should strap you down first so you don't hurt anymore of my pets."  He looks away for a moment and reaches for some straps.

Do you:

A)  Grab for the knife and swing at his body
B)  Grab for the knife and swing at his throat
C)  Roll off the gurney away from the doctor and run for the door
D)  Wait for a better opportunity
E)  Call for help

***hint (which I am giving you because I did not expect that you would be in this position this early, and you do not have everything you were supposed to have when you arrived here):  You have been given several clues about what you must do next.  They may not be the most obvious, but they are definitely there.  There is one and only one correct answer.  All other options will either eventually or immediately get you killed.  Think carefully.  Go back and read the above narrative and previous posts and try to put the clues together.  Feel free to post your reasoning for your answer.  I would like to see whether anyone actually reasoned it out correctly as opposed to just getting lucky.

Actually, I've been thinking about this a bit more. I still don't think calling for help would do any good, we have no reason to believe that anyone is here who would help. Waiting for a better opportunity could still just get us tied down.

He doesn't seem at all concerned you might run away. The only reason he wants to strap you down is so you don't hurt any more of those worm things. If he thought you had any chance of running away when you woke up he would have tied you down when you were knocked out. The doctor says "I'm the spider who spins his web. And this is my parlor,". This could be another clue that running will do you no good. If you were stick in a spider web struggling (running) could just entangle you in that web even more.

This reminds me of the scene in The Lord of the Rings when Frodo is caught in Shelob's webs. He struggled trying to pull himself free and that just got him caught in more webs. When he started cutting at the webs with his sword he was freed. Maybe, we're supposed to cut our way out of of his the Doctor's web by killing him with the knife.

I don't really have much on which of the two knife options we should pick. The only thing I really have to go on is the doctor saying "I didn't expect you to wake up so quickly.  I guess the best stories really do repeat themselves.". He's probably referring to the dead man you found in the other surgery room. But maybe this is a clue that we are supposed to attack the body instead of the throat. The man in the other room was killed by a cut from the throat to the navel, down the body. Maybe we are supposed to make this story repeat itself by killing the doctor the same way he killed the other man by slashing him down the body.

It's not much to go on, but I I've changed my answer to A.

As he looks away, you decide to seize the moment because you might not get another chance at this.  You take a deep breath and force yourself to overcome your fear.  In one movement, you turn on the gurney and reach for the long-bladed knife and then lunge at the doctor.  As the knife tears at his body, he screams in pain and jumps back.  Out of pure pain reflex, he moves faster than you think you've ever seen anyone move, grabbing a saw-like instrument from the instrument table and striking you with it with such force that it not only pierces your chest, but goes completely through you and impales you on the gurney.  The last thing you see is the doctor stabbing you over and over and over in a berzerker rage.  You are dead.

I'm trying to decide where to put you now.  I want to put you back to where you first see the maggot creatures and make you decide again whether to fight or run, but I'm afraid you'll try just avoid the whole confrontation.  Oh well.  You're back on the gurney.  Same options as before.  There is a further hint below if you scroll down below the choices.

Hint:  This place is built on two themes.  First, various elements are based on the being that controls this particular world.  Second, and most importantly for this puzzle, this world is based on a certain very famous fictional place.  That is the key.  Figure out what the place is, and who your chacter and the doctor's character represent.  Since, in the doctor's own words, the story should repeat itself, you should make sure to do whatever your counterpart in this famous story did, and you should survive.  If you really can't figure out what the famous fictional place is (which you should, given all the clues about it, including me flat out giving you the name of it in one post, I'll give you further hints.

I'm going to go with D.  No one else is, and I just have a feeling that something will happen.  It sounds the least likely, but sometimes in these things that's what they want you to think...

As he looks away, you scream at the top of your lungs, hoping someone hears you and will come to your rescue.  The doctor laughs.  "Who are you expecting to save you?  Glenda the Good Witch?"  His laughing becomes somewhat maniacal as he straps your arms, legs, head, and torso to the gurney.  You keep screaming, but are unable to move your head as he takes a huge needle and some very coarse, dirty looking thread and sews your mouth closed.  "That was really annoying," he says.

"Now I know you're a cowardly little kitty, but I promise you, this next part will not kill you.  You'll just wish it did."  He begins ripping into your body with his instruments.  You feel flesh tear, and bones crack.  The pain is maddening, and the procedure lasts for days.  There is no anesthetic to numb the pain, but you slip in and out of consciousness.  By the time you are done, you can barely form a coherent thought.  You are unstrapped from the table and stood on your feet by two guards, one of whom only has one hand.  You look up at the doctor, who now seems a lot taller for some reason.  He tells you, "You'll have to live outside now with your brothers until I call you."  You are unceremoneously brought downstairs and thrown outside into the streets.  You spend the rest of your short days foraging for whatever you can find to eat.  Every now and then, you see a normal-looking person, and you and other dwarf creatures like you hunt it in the hopes you can kill and eat it.  Sometimes, you succeed.  You also notice earthquakes of increasing frequency and severity.  The last one completely rips apart this strange world that has become your home.  You are dead.

**********SPOILERS -- DO NOT READ IF YOU WANT TO FIGURE OUT THE PUZZLE FOR YOURSELF*************

The solution is relatively straightforward.  There have been several clues that should lead you to make the connection between this place and a VERY famous fictional place.  Figure that out, and then figure out which characters from that fictional story you and the doctor represent, and you will likely find the answer.  But note, the answer is not in the move--only the book.  One of the characters does not appear in the movie.  But even if you have not read the book, this is the 21st century after all.  If you figure out what this place represents and which character you are, things like Google and Wikipedia will find you the answer.  I am telling you this much because it is a lot more fun, IMO, to know the rationale behind why a choice is correct than to just stumble upon it by luck or because you've simply tried every other choice.  This should be enough information.  I would recommend you stop reading here and try to figure it out.  But there are more hints below, if you need them.

Quote
"Yes it is.  Now stop being a coward and go do what you have to do." . . .  The fact that it called you a coward sends you into a rage.

Quote
From where you stand, there is a road of sorts set with pale, gold-colored stones, leading from the place you stand to the city.  It looks like a long walk, but you can make it.  There are several buildings, all black.  In fact, everything in this place but the road appears to be black.  In the center of the city is a tower taller than the rest.  You see a light on all the way at the top.  It reminds you of a lighthouse.  "Follow the yellow-brick road," you say to yourself.  The reference almost makes you smile as you walk toward the city.

Quote
dwarf creature

Quote
You stare east, back down the yellow road, your eyes on horizon in a steady-set gaze.

Quote
"Now I know you're a cowardly little kitty, but I promise you, this next part will not kill you.  You'll just wish it did."

Honestly, if you can't guess from all of those, I can't help you much more than that.   :lol

You stare at his corpse for a few moments, simultaneously horrified at what you've done and relieved that you're still alive.  The up your spine can't get any colder, but your adrenaline overrides the pain in your shoulder as you slowly and carefully remove the scapel and toss it away.  You do, however, take the knife again.  You see the rest of your things on a chair in the corner and take them as well.  You then walk back out into the hallway.  A quick look at the plaque next to the door confirms that you were in surgery room B.

You enter Dr. Heven's office.  It is a lot like Dr. Diepen's office, but a lot messier.  There are piles of papers and files everywhere.  One thing that catches your eye is the bulletin boad on one wall that is choked with layer upon layer of paper, held up by push pins, staples, and whatever else the bastard doctor could find to fasten them.  What catches your eye is the memorandum with the word "URGENT" in red letters at the top.  The contents of the memo state:

TO:  Silent Tower tenants and residents
FROM:  Management
The emerald city has been completely burned, and we are expecting the end soon.  Tenants and other occupants will be vacated as needed.  As you are aware, several floors have already been vacated.  Cell blocks B, C, and D, which are now vacant are being permanently closed down.  Most of the prisoners from cell block A have been altered and are now gone as well, although we will continue to keep at least one armed guard posted in cell block A.  Please keep all areas secure and be vigilant.  We expect more invaders may attempt to close down the operation before it is complete.  Any invaders with silver shoes should be reported immediately.  Access to the Pent house shall remain restricted.

There is nothing else useful here that you can see, so you go back out into the hallway.

You enter the men's room, and the stench nearly knocks you over.  There are pools of blood on the floor, and a small pail of what looks like semi-decayed entrails under one of the sinks.  You hear a rustling sound coming from one of the two stalls at the far end of the men's room.  You take a step closer, and see a maggot creature fall to the floor.  You are repulsed by the sickening monstrous sight.

Do you:

A)  Come closer, open the stall door, and attack it.  (with what?)
B)  Try to look around the rest of the men's room and hope it doesn't notice you.

You run to the stall, throw open the door and quickly stomp on the maggot creature, which makes a sickening pop under your foot.  Success.  However, the dozen or so maggot creatures feasting on the flesh of the fresh corpse hanging from the ceiling do not appear amused by you interrupting their meal.  They begin hissing at you.

You turn and bolt for the door.  It is only a few feet away, but nothing in this place is easy, is it?  Just as you turn, you feel the first sting on your back as one of the maggot creatures launches through the air and hits you.  Luckily for you, it can't get a grip and falls off.  Another hits your hand and gives you a painful sting before you brush it away.  As you open the door and begin to turn, you see another headed straight for your face.  It narrowly misses and hits the closing door.  As you stand in the hallway and catch your breath, you hear a couple of soft "pock" sounds as a couple more maggot creatures hit the now-closed door behind you.

The stings hurt a little, but you don't have anything to take away your pain.  Thankfully, they don't hurt all that much.

Do you:

A)  Go back to the waiting room

You approach the two rooms to the southeast.  As you do, you notice that the southernmost room is boarded up.  From inside, you hear what sounds like several inhuman voices screaming constantly.  You open the nothernmost door.  It is a storage closet.  Propped up in one corner are a bunch of boards, probably the ones that formerly boarded up Surgery Room B, and a crowbar.  On a shelf, you find some alcohol and bandages.  You take them and close the door.

You go back for the crowbar and then try the women's room door.  It is locked.  (and, no, you can't use the crowbar on it)

And...I'm too tired at the moment to think up a clever way to incorporate DT lyrics.  You'll have to wait until next post.

You go into the file room.  There is noting interesting to see here, but you take a moment to catch your breath and reflect on your past life.  You wish there was some way out of here--some way you could just run to the hills.  If you could at least have reinforcements, as you cannot fight this battle alone.  Maybe tomorrow you'll be saved.  Either way, resolve that you won't be a prisoner.  With your newfound courage, you decide to push on.

I said the crowbar would not work on the locked women's room door.  It may work other places.  Whether it is a good idea to try using it other places is an entirely different matter.

You enter the reception area.  There is a long desk/counter area that runs the length of the wall separating the reception area from the waiting room you came through when you first exited the elevator bay on this floor.  There is a computer sitting on the countertop at the end toward you.  Toward the other end, underneat the countertop are some drawers.  There are a couple of chairs.  As you enter the room, the computer begins to hum and whirr, and the monitor comes to life, giving off a pale glow.  You somehow feel drawn to the beckoning light.

Do you:

A)  Sit down and try using the computer
B)  Attack the computer

You sit down in front of the computer.  The screen is blank other than a flashing cursor.  Suddenly, you see the word "Kevin?"  On screen.

"Yes," you type.

"Good, so you did get in after all.  I was afraid you would get killed out in the city and I would have to start over.  I cannot say much.  This is an unsecured line.  And if they find out I am helping you...
The Silent Man is locked in the penthouse.  Go there and kill him.  Do not let him talk to you.  He probably will not try.  But his words hold power.  Kill him as quickly as possible.  It is the only way.  Stay away from the guards.  They are too strong for you.  But you can find guns behind--"

The screen goes dark.  You try hitting more keys, but nothing happens.

You insert the key into the women's restroom door, and turn it.  The door unlocks, but the key breaks off in the lock.  You enter, and look around.  It seems as though you are alone.  You stop for a moment in front of the mirror.  "Hello, mirror."  You mind begins to drift off and recall recent events.  You remember the studio where this all began.  You notice that you are holding the envelope in your hand as you think about the studio.  Your reflection in the mirror begins to blur.  You could almost swear you faintly see what looks like a room in the movie studio begin to merge with the reflection of the women's room.  Just then, something in the reflection of the stall behind you catches you eye, and the reflection snaps back to its crystal clear image.  Through the partially-opened stall door, you see what appear to be words written in lipstick on the wall inside the stall.  You push open the doors and begin to read:

"I hope someone finds this.  I tried to get away, but this is the only place I could run to.  Don't let them cut you down to size too.  Remember what the lion did to the spider, my pretty.  I think that's your only hope."

"Good advice.  But a bit too late," you say to yourself.  You go back out into the hallway.

Okay, well since A is the only actual choice...   :lol

You go back out into the waiting room.  You hear a click as the door closes behind you.  Although you don't really see any reason to go back, the fact that you are now locked out annoys you, so you try forcing with all of your will, but still the door doesn't open.  "Well, I guess that's that," you say to yourself as you go back into the elevator bay and into the open doors of the elevator.

The hand is still on the floor.  Interestingly, the floor around the hand has turned a sickly green color.  Otherwise, the elevator is unchanged:  there is nothing but a card scanner and the following buttons:
L
17
18
22
P
Door Open
Door Close

A)  Press "L"

*update*

You may (and some might say *should*) choose any of the actual letter options and specify any additional buttons you would like to press that aren't letter options.  Based on what you know is going on in the building, I'll let you think on that one for a bit before we move on.

Well, the computer said The Silent Man is locked in the Penthouse. I took that to mean we can't get in there yet. So I just picked the next floor up since I can't really think of something better to do at the moment. If anyone wants to go to a different floor/do something else I'm up for it. The only other things I can think of to do right now is use the map screen thing to get a map of the next floor we decide to go to.

Floor 18 is that cellblock A thing.  I remember reading something about it... I bet that is a place where we can find even more infomation and help.  Although there are probably a lot of guards there.

I guess the same goes for 22, but since that is the CEO's floor... fewer if any guards.

I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that we go to P last.

I guess I pick F.

Either that or go back to the lobby and finish off that guard with the crowbar, and then go take a dump in the toilet down there.

I think he's saying we should press more than one button.  Like "E" + "hold" so the elevator stops at 18 so no guards can call it and then use it to come to our floor.  So...

"E" + "hold"

Oh, I completely forgot about that directory. And you are right, I forgot about the hold button.

I'll go with E + hold then.

You press "18" and the elevator begins to move.  The indicator light flashes "18," the doors open, and you get out into the elevator bay (but not before pressing "hold").  To the south is a heavy security door with wired glass.  You look through the glass and see a small desk and some shelves, and a another security door exiting out of this next room to the east.  Next to the door is what looks like an electronic scanner pad used to scan fingerprints.  The door to this glass prison is locked.

Do you:

A)  Try to open the door (with what?)
B)  Go back to the elevator and go somewhere else (where?)

You go back to the elevator and retrieve the killing hand and press it up to the scanner.  You hear a clicking sound of tumblers unlocking and a computerized female voice say, "Access granted.  Electrocution field deactivated."  "Wow, good think I didn't try to the crowbar," you say to yourself.  You try the same thing with the door to the east, with the same result.  You are standing in a hallway that runs from north to south.  To the east, running from north to south, are three doorways.  The first two are to men's and women's rooms--or at least, what used to be men's and women's rooms.  The doors are removed and there are just holes in the wall.  The washrooms are filled with debris.  There is a door directly across from you.  The south end of the hallway appear to turn right as you are facing south.

Do you:

A)  Go back
B)  Try to open the door

You go to the south hall and start walking west.  As you approach the first cell, the door suddenly bursts open.  Looking inside, it seems sort of like a hologram, or ghosts acting out a play. There is a young man bound to a table with some sort of mesh cage on his head. Standing next to him is a police officer, who is speaking.

"Are you going to tell us about your friend Victoria? Surely there's something she's done so that we can bring her in."

"No! She hasn't done anything! She hardly even associates with me, man!"

"Weren't you friends as children?"

"Yeah, but she's a good kid! Why would she hang out with someone like me?"

"I don't know. Nonetheless, surely you know of something that she's done, right? Vandalism, skipping class, maybe shoplifting?"

"No, she doesn't do any of that."

"In that case...make something up."

"Make something up? What the hell? Why?"

"Because I told you to. But you're being so uncooperative...let me ask you a question. What are you afraid of?"

"H-huh? Uh...I don't like spiders..."

"Spiders. That's good, spiders are good."

The police officer walks away and comes back with some sort of box. He opens a hole in the cage and the top of the box.

"This is your last chance. Have anything interesting to say about Victoria?"

"Screw you, pig!"

"Oh, well..."

The officer brings the box up to the hole in the cage and begins to pour out its contents: spiders. The young man is screaming. The officer closes the door in the cage and sets the the box aside.

"This can end whenever you're ready to tell us something about Victoria..."

The door slams shut.  The thing that makes you the most uncomfortable about this strange déjà vu is that the young man appears to be a slightly older version of you sometime in the not-too-distant future.

You turn the corner and start heading north along the west hallway.  You are startled when what looks like a grotesque monkey with wings rushes the bars of the southwestern cell and tries to grab at you.  You jump back just out of his reach and stare it it for a moment.  You sense anguish and dispair in its eyes.  Yet, you also get the sense it would sooner tear you limb from limb than help you.  You know it's easier to walk way than look it in the eye, so you continue on.  The next cell is empty, although it looks to have been occupied recently.  You reach the end of the hallway without incident and turn the corner in the northernmost hallway, heading east.  The first cell you come to is occupied by a man in a filthy, torn lab coat, who is sitting alone in the far corner of his cell with his head in his hands.

"Hello," you say.  Startled, he looks up.  As he rises to his feat and walks to his cell door, you see the name on his coat:  Heven, M.D.

"A visitor," he says with a smile.  "To what do I owe this pleasure."

"Um...I'm not here for you.  I need to get going," you say.

"You can't.  You're trapped and I don't think I'm about to let you go."

"What do you mean, trapped?  You're locked in there, and I'm out here, free as a bird," you say.

"That may be, but not for long if I yell out.  Help me, or I'll call the guard, and then you'll be no better off than I am.  They decided they had no more use for me, so here I am.  I need to get out of here, and you're going to help me, or you'll never get out of here alive.  All it takes is one scream.  Wanna see?"

You cannot tell if he is bluffing.

As far as you're concerned, that bastard doctor's gonna pay.  But you also can't have him alerting the guards to your presence.

"What do you need me to do?" you ask.

"Why, get me out of here, of course," he says as he wickedly smiles.  "You have to use the fingerprint scanner on the outside of my door.  If you've gotten in here, I think you've probably figured out a way to bypass that.  You also have to punch in the right code on the keypad."

"Do you know the code?" you ask.

"Nah," he says.  "They change it every day.  I just know it's four digits.  But whenever the guards need to open a cell door, they always go to the room at the end of the hall first.  Check there.  I think it's in some sort of riddle.  I once heard the guards jokin' about it.  But remember, if you try to screw me over, I'll yell so loud this place'll be crawlin' with guards so fast it'll make yer head spin.  Now go.  I got some unfinished business to attend to with my partner once you spring me."

You continue down the hallway.  The next cell you pass is empty.  As you pass the last cell, the door flies open.  There is an old man sitting in the corner looking at you.  He somehow makes you feel very comfortable and safe, so you enter the cell.

"I know why you're here," he says.

"Good.  Because I don't.  Why am I here?" you ask.

"That isn't what is important," he says.  "What is important is the choice that lies ahead of you.  Will you do what he asks of you?  Or will you come to appreciate that life is short, and learn from your mistakes?  Choose wisely.  The fates of many more than just yourself hang in the balance."

"What is that supposed to mean?  What choice are you talking about?"

"You will know when the time comes," he says.  "Chose light or choose darkness.  Choose carefully.  But I must be going now.  This is all the time I have been given."

"No, wait!  I have more questions," you say.  But the old man smiles and vanishes into thin air.  You leave the cell and continue to the door at the end of the hall.  It is locked, but you use the hand to open it.  Inside are a pair of chairs facing a window that looks to be one-way glass.  But the room it looks into is dark, and you cannot make out what is inside.  There is also a small filing cabinet in the corner.

You look in the file cabinet.  Inside you find a file that says "daily door code."  You open it, pull out the memo, and read:

"Superimpose it on the account of Dorothy's quest.  Speak to me when the lion roars.  The eclipse represents the end.  The date of release is the key."

In a world full of constant confusion, this does little but add to yours.

Do you:

A)  Leave the room and go back
B)  Go into the next room

You enter the next room.  As you do, the lights come on.  You expect to see a typical interrogation room, essentially bare except for a table in the center.  What you see instead is even more disconcerting and removes any shadow of doubt that, indeed, things are getting just a little bit scary.  In the center of the room is a chair with straps and electrodes.  The chair is caked with dried blood and other things, and there is a drain in the floor just below it.  There are other furnishings in the room that most closely resemble medieval torture devices--things with spikes, and nails, and needles, and things.  You shudder as your mind imagines what such things can be used for.  The most mundane object in the room is a mirror that is roughly the size of a door and has an intricate gilded frame.

Seeing nothing useful here, you quickly leave.  As you walk back down the hall to the west, you soon arrive back at the doctor's cell.  "Did you find what you need to let me out?," he asks.

You reply.  "Yes, I--I think so."

"Good, so let me out now.  Please."

Do you:

A)  Enter a code (what code?)
B)  Say, "Sorry, I've reconsidered and don't think that's the best idea.  You'll have to stay here and rot."  Run back toward the elevator.

The book doesn't really have anything to do with this particular puzzle.  I'll reiterate the clue again:

You look in the file cabinet.  Inside you find a file that says "daily door code."  You open it, pull out the memo, and read:

"Superimpose it on the account of Dorothy's quest.  Speak to me when the lion roars.  The eclipse represents the end.  The date of release is the key."

Not sure if wikipedia will help or not.  I suspect it will.  But if you know enough to pick up on whatever wikipedia would say, you probably know enough to answer the riddle already.

Well, since the date of release is the 4-digit number, you might want to try that.  I mean, I'm just saying...   :)

The movie was an MGM movie

Wrong item.  You are not looking for the release date of the movie.  You are looking for the release date of the "it" referred to in the first line.

I'm a little stumped... if this was an RPG video game I'd save the game and then be trying different things right now.

Take out the map and speak "Oz"...?

 :lol  No, but interesting theory.

If you don't know the answer, I might suggest asking around the forum.  There are a lot of people on this forum that I have seen discuss doing the very thing the riddle describes.  In fact, there have been several threads about it in the life of these forums (probably all pre-crash, unfortunately).

EDIT:  I take that back.  A quick search indicates that the subject has been discussed in several existing threads.  Get Sigz or DMOS back in here, and I bet they know the answer (and don't just go back and search their posts--that's cheating).

1973.

:D  So...would you like to explain how you arrived at your answer?

You enter "1-9-7-3" into the keypad.  A green light appears above the fingerprint scanner, so you scan the hand.  You hear the tumblers in the lock begin to move, and you back away as the cell door slides open.  You laugh at what you've done in freeing this butcher.  But you didn't really have much choice, did you?

"Thanks," he says as he brushes past you and begins running down the hallway.  He disappears around the corner into the south hallway.  You run after him.  As you pass the flying monkey's cell, it lets out a shriek and does not stop.  You see the door at the end of the hallway to the guard quarters fly open, another 8-foot guard who looks identical to the one in the lobby is standing there with a surprised look on his face.

"What's going on on here?" he bellows?  Then his eyes fix on the doctor and narrow.  "You..."  He moves with blinding speed and wrestles the doctor to the ground.  As the two struggle, you contemplate your next move.

Do you:

A)  Turn around and run back the way you came
B)  Join the fight (with what?)
C)  Hurriedly squeeze past them while they are otherwise occupied, and exit back to the elevator well

^That man is correct.

Yes, he is.  And I'll also take that as a "C" vote.  But, yes.  Anyone who didn't get the DSOTM references needs to turn in their Prog Fan card immediately.  The only thing I've ever heard of being superimposed over the Wizard of Oz is DSOTM.  Speak To Me is the first song and is to be started as the MGM lion roars before the opening credits.  Eclipse is the last song.  The release date is 1973.  Anyhow...

You squeeze past the scrum on the concrete hallway floor and quickly hold the hand up to the keypad and run through the first door.  You turn around briefly to see what has become of the guard and the doctor just in time to see the guard slam the doctor's head into the concrete.  Hard.  So hard, in fact, that blood and brain matter splatter the window.  You turn and open the second door, and then run to the elevator.  You press "22" and hear the guard yell "stop!" just as the doors close and the elevator takes you to the 22nd floor.  The doors open, and you hit the "hold" button before doing anything.  You step out into the plush carpeted elevator well, which is decorated with rich wood paneling and intricate light fixtures.  This is certainly different from the 18th floor.  Where are you now?  There are identical-looking frosted glass doors to the north and to the south.

Do you:

A)  Go through the door to the north
B)  Go through the door to the south

You go through the south door and find yourself in a nicely decorated lobby area.  There is a reception desk, but no receptionist.  There is also a small coffee table with two chairs.  To the west is a door leading to a large conference room.  Behind the receptionist desk to the east is a door labeled "security."  There is also a short hallway to the northeast with restrooms and a door at the far north end.

You pause to pick up a magazine on the coffee table because the girl on the front cover reminds you of someone back home.  You think of the argument you had with her earlier in the day before you were brought here, and it pains you that you can't see eye to eye, though the miles still divide.  (yeah, I know we're supposed to have DT lyrics, but I'm listening to the FW Parallels deluxe edition I picked up earlier today, so deal with it)  You feel yourself let out a sigh as you drop it back on the table.  As you do so, the motion of dropping the magazine causes a small sheet of notepaper you didn't notice before to fly off the table and flutter to the ground.  You pick it up and read it:  "Call me right away!," it says.

Do you:

A)  Explore the lobby area
B)  Go into the conference room
C)  Go into the security room
D)  Go into the men's room
E)  Go into the women's room
F)  Go through the door at the north end of the hallway

You go into the men's room.  It is the most extravagant restroom you have ever seen.  The floor looks like a solid slab of marble.  On one wall is a waterfall, flowing into a basin on the floor.  You are immediately attracted to the waterfall and take a few steps closer.  You are captivated by the water in a way you cannot exlain and are unable to turn your gaze away from it.  As you draw closer, you see images of various people in the water.  They are laughing and talking with one another, and doing various other things, although you cannot hear any sound.  The image of a woman in the waterfall stops talking and looks at you.  She turns and beckons to you, and you come closer and closer, somehow unable to resist her silent siren call.  Every fiber in your being just wants you to pour your soul into the water.  She leans forward as if to kiss you, and you close your eyes and press your lips to the waterfall.  Your concentration is broken as you realize you are standing ankel deep in the basin and your socks and shoes are now wet.

You quickly step out of the water and walk over to the sink basin to grab a towel.  As you do, you notice in the mirror that your mouth is bleeding and it appears your lip has been bitten, although you don't recall how.  The small bite marks remind you of fangs from pictures of snake bites you saw when you were a boy scout years ago.  You dab it dry with one of the expensive feeling silk towels on the counter.  There is also a basket of expensive smelling colognes on the counter and a bowl of mints.  A small card in the bowl says, "eat me."

You feel a bit dizzy.

The room begins to feel like it is spinning.  You grab for the bowl of mints and knock it into the sink, sending most of the mints down the drain.  You manage to grab one and get it into your mouth just before you pass out.

You wake up a few moments later and get to your feet.  Your reflection in the mirror looks no different, but you feel a sudden burst of boundless energy; a euphoria sensation.  The bite mark on your lip is gone.  You open the door and standing there before you outside the restroom is a guard.

"Hello there," he says.  "You don't belong here.  And those little stunts you pulled downstairs made us mad."  He brandishes a long, wicked-looking blade and smiles an evil smile.

You still feel afraid, but decide it is time to stand your ground.  You pull out the large knife and say, "Look, I've got no beef with you.  I'm just trying to get home.  We don't have to do this dance."

"Oh yes we do.  You need to pay.  You need to dance.  Death is the first dance eternal."  He lunges at you.  You are amazed at how your body reacts with a surge of energy and speed you've never experienced before.  You easily dodge and tear a huge gash in his arm with your own knife.  The guard looks at his arm in disbelief, then back at you.  "Oh, so you wanna play rough, do you?"  He lunges even faster.  You duck and counter, slashing at his closest leg.  He howls in pain and falls to one knee.  However, you also now have a deep cut down your left shoulder.  If not for the added boost in speed you now have, it would have taken your head off.  The guard is breathing heavy, and you think this fight is about over.  But just as you lower your knife, he springs at you from his crouched position.

You dodge left and bring up your knife.  Although you move with superhuman speed, the guard still clips your right side as he goes by, which spins you halfway around as you feel the knife being torn from your grasp.  The bad news is that he was also right-handed.  You look down and see a large, deep cut in your left side.  Your side is bleeding bad, but you'll be okay if you can wrap it quickly and stop the bleeding.  The good news is that as you glance over at the guard, who is face down on the floor, you see the tip of your knife protruding through his back.  He starts to push himself up, then slumps back to the floor, driving the knife through even deeper.  He does not move, and you see a pool of black blood forming underneath him.  You breathe a sigh of relief.

Man, you guys are giving me a workout today.  Okay...

Oh, and let me just say:  For those playing since the beginning and those who have gone back and read the whole thing, you know some background on your character.  I purposely did not make him some video-game uber warrior dude.  He is a teenager who has never been in a serious life-or-death fight, ever.  This was your first, and you won.  You had some help from a power up (you can thank Splent and his overactive bladder for stumbling on the correct sequence of events that got you the power up before the guard found you), but you won.  This experience counts for something.  But don't get overly confident.  Your character learns and grows as the game goes on, but he doesn't become superman overnight.  Anyhow, back to our show...

================================================

You clean and bandage your wounds.

You search the body and find a key, but not much else.  You try to retrieve your knife from the body, but it is in too deep.  Instead, you pry the guard's knife out of his hand and take it.  You then step over the guard's body and out the door.  You pause for a moment and look back at the body lying on the floor and realize you feel no remorse whatsoever for taking his life, and this realization scares you a bit.  Have you traded innocence for permanent psychotic hell?

Back in the lobby area, you notice that the door to the security room is now open.

You cautiously enter the security office.  The office consists mainly of file drawers full of video tapes, some video recording equipment, and a chair facing various monitors with images of locations within the tower.  You recognize many of the locations as places you have been to.  You do not recognize others.  You recognize one screen as the 18th floor.  You see a guard there cleaning up the mess of what was once the good doctor.  One monitor catches your eye for all of the commotion going on onscreen.  It is the elevator bank in the lobby.  A guard clutching a bandaged stump of an arm sits in the corner, rocking back and forth.  There are five other guards milling around, pointing, and doing other things.  One is yelling into a phone, pointing at the elevators and gesturing rapidly.  You are not going to be able to leave this tower the way you came in, and you may not have much time before they figure out a way up to your floor.  You feel somewhat caught in a web.

You exit the security room and head back out into the lobby.

You enter the conference room.  There is a large conference table with chairs on both sides.  There is a laptop at one seat, hooked up to a projector that is projecting images and words you cannot read up onto a screen.  The images change every few seconds.  They are all pictures of people, animals, and objects.  Among them are the five pictures you saw on the wall of the studio, a picture of you, and pictures of several of your friends.  The rest are people you do not recognize.  There is also a health drink on the table, unopened.  You take it and leave.

You then attempt to go through the door at the north end of the hallway, but find that it is locked.  You try the key, and the door opens.  You are in a hallway that runs east to west.  At the east end close to you is a door to the clerk's office.  At the far end is a door into the CEO's office.  In between are several vacant office cubicles.

You open the door to the clerk's office and see a disheveled little man in a wrinkled suit feverishly working his way through a pile of paperwork on his desk.  The clerk looks up at you, grunts, and goes back to his paperwork.  He does not appear threatening in any way.  After a moment more of you not moving, he stops, grunts at you a little louder and waived impatiently for you to come closer.  You do.  "Um...what is it you want me to do?" you ask him.

He makes more grunting noises, and you see while he is going so that it appears his tongue has been removed, which explains why he is grunting and not talking.  He reaches into a desk drawer, pulls out an iPhone and holds it out to you.  Just as you are about to take it, he jerks it back suddenly.  "Look, I don't have time for games.  What is it you want?" you ask.

The suited man smiles and points at the mp3 player hooked onto your belt and then holds out the phone again.  "Oh, you want to trade."

Do you:

You unclip your mp3 player and hold it out.  Before you even have time to react, the clerk swipes it out of your hand and whisks it into his desk drawer without even looking up at you.  You wait for him to hand you the phone, but perhaps your communication with your silent friend is not working, because he merely continues ignorning you and working on his paperwork.

"Excuse me," you say, slightly annoyed.  "The phone please?"

He looks up at you and seems to have an expression of mock confusion.

"We were supposed to trade."

He blinks, and then lets out a sigh and hands you the phone.  He then continues processing his paperwork, so you exit.

A)  Try to use the phone
B)  Go into the CEO's office

You examine the phone for a few minutes and wonder out loud, "I really just need to find out what to do next.  I wonder if there's an app. for that."  As if on cue, the phone scrolls to and opens the phone directory, highlights the number for "Studio - Main," and dials.  You hear the line connect, and hear a series of beeps, but no voice.

"Hello?  Hello, is someone there?" you say into the phone.

You hear a digitized voice respond, "Kevin?"

You:  "Yes.  Yes, it's me.  I got this phone from the clerk in the tower."

Computer:  "Then you've made it farther than I thought.  I honestly didn't think you would be able to evade the guards this long."

You pause for a moment, and then:  "About that...  I got into a fight.  And I killed one of the guards.  And the doctor as well.  I didn't mean to, but I--I didn't really have a choice."

Computer:  "This is unexpected, but that explains all the activity.  Look, you are going to have to hurry.  Take the CEO's access card.  He keeps it in his top desk drawer.  He should not be in, but be careful.  He may not look like much, and he would not normally be a match for you if you can take out a guard.  But he is usually armed.  You need the card to access the penthouse.  That is where the silent man is.  Kill him and kill him quickly.  Remember--he is dangerous if he talks.  Do not let him speak to you.  Just kill him and then call me for further instructions."

You:  "But what if I don't want to kill him?  I don't want to kill anyone else.  I want this classic nightmare to end so I can get out of here."

Computer, sounding agitated:  "As I told you, you don't get to make the rules.  I do.  You do what I say and maybe you get to go home when I say you do.  You have no choice in the matter."

You:  "That's not what the old man said."

Computer, after a pause:  "What old man?"

You:  "There was an old man in one of the prison cells.  He said I have a choice to make and that I should choose carefully.  Do you know what he meant?"

Computer:  "No.  And you should not have gone there.  It is too dangerous.  Now stop arguing with me and do what you are told.  Your highest priority is to kill the silent man.  Until you do, we have nothing more to talk about.  Call me for further instructions once he is dead."  The line disconnects.

You walk to the CEO's office.  The huge, dark wood doors are locked.  You try the key and they open.  As you enter, you see a man in a suit behind a heavy oak desk staring out the open window.  He quickly spins around, a look of terror on his face and points the gun he is holding in his hand at you.  "You!  You made it in here."

You put up your hands and answer:  "Look, take it easy.  I just need something from you and I'll be on my way."

CEO, as he climbs up onto the window sill:  "Oh, I think I can figure out what you want.  Who am I kidding?  If you could take out my guards so easily, this obviously isn't going to protect me.  I know he sent you.  I guess my time is finally up."  He raises the gun and pulls the trigger.

"No, wait!" you shout.  But you are too late.  His body goes limp as he fires a shot through his head.  His body tumbles out the window, and the gun along with it.  You stand there stunned for a second, but then gather yourself and begin searching the desk.  You find the CEO's access card as well as a strange looking pair of rose-colored sunglasses.  You don't believe you'll wear rose colored glasses, but you take them anyway, wondering what they could possibly be used for.

You look around the office.  The walls have dark wood paneling. There are windows along the north and west walls, once of which is open.  There is a heavy wood credenza along the west all that the CEO used to step up onto the window sill before killing himself.  The desk is in front of that.  You try other desk drawers, but they are locked.  There is an expensive-looking leather couch in the northeast corner.  As it shows on your map, there are no windows along the south wall.  There are two large book cases with an approximately-door-sized gap in between them, but no door that you can see with your own eyes.  The carpet looks and feels expensive.  Too bad.  That puddle of urine in between the desk and credenza will be a pain to clean.  You see nothing else with your own eyes that looks useful.

No I wouldn't.  I have a feeling that the old man is the silent man.

Go back and kill the old man and take back the mp3 player so you have both.

:p  You search the room, including the gap.  You search the gap thoroughly, but find nothing.  On a whim, you put on the glasses and look around the room.  Other than the color, nothing looks different...until you look at the gap between the book cases.  You now see the outline of a doorway and the outline of a hand in the center of the way.  You remove the glasses and take another look, as well as running your hand over the wall.  You see and feel nothing but a plain wall.  You put your glasses on again and the markings are there, clear as day.  You hold the hand up to the hand outline on the wall.  By your hand, you see a light begin to grow and spread through the wall.  A door opens and you go inside.  You are in a large armory filled with weapons of all kinds--certainly enough for a small army.  Unfortunately, they are locked in heavy steel racks that you cannot open.  You try your existing key, but it does not work and ends up breaking.  What is the deal with keys in this place, anyway?  There is, however, a handgun sitting out on a cleaning table in the center of the armory with a magazine next to it.  You take the gun, load the magazine, and leave.

As you arrive back in the elevator bank, you see the doors to your elevator begin to close.  You run and dive through just as the doors snap shut.  The LED indicator that tells you what floor you are on reads, "SYSTEM OVERRIDE" in flashing letters.  The elevator begins descending.  You hit the "hold" button, and the elevator stops.  But the minute you let go, it begins descending again.

A)  Ride the elevator back down

You scan the access card and press and hold the "P" button.  The elevator stops and then begins to rise.  You arrive at the penthouse and the doors open.  Since somebody is trying to override the elevator, you decide to use the crowbar to hold the "hold" button to keep the guards in the lobby from arriving on this floor unexpectedly.

You step out of the elevator into a small room with a circular staircase going up.  You ascend the stairs and find yourself in a circular room at the top of the tower.  There are no walls; only windows.  The room is brilliantly lit, but you do not see the source of the light.  In the center is an Asian looking man with long, black hair that flows down to the floor and out some of the windows.  He looks at you and silently smiles.

"So I arrive.  The silent man?" you ask.  He nods, still smiling, although there is a deep sadness in his eyes.

"I think you have made your choice about what you came here to do," he says.  "The question is, which choice did you make?  I hope you have enough information to make a good choice."

You draw your gun, but decide to take the risk of trying to get some answers before you make any hasty decisions.

"I was told I shouldn't talk to you," you say.  "I was told it is too dangerous and that...well, basically, I'll become bewitched if I allow you to speak."

"Then what did you come here to do?" he asks.  His voice is very soothing and calming, almost eerily so, and you feel your power to do him harm being stripped away from you involuntarily.

You:  "I think you know.  If I want to get home, I've only got one choice.  So are you as dangerous as I've bene told?"

The Silent Man:  "You will have to answer that for yourself.  I don't think anything I could say will influence you one way or the other.  But I am locked up here, so there are some who would consider me dangerous."

You:  "Why don't you give me straight answers?"

The Silent Man:  "Why don't you make up your mind and either put that gun away or pull the trigger?"

You feel your arm slowly lowering.  The most interesting thing about this sensation is that you are not lowering it.  It seems to be doing that all on its own.  You bring your arm back up and yell, "Stop it!"

"Don't you manipulate me!," you continue.

"Not to quibble over who is manipulating who here," he says, "but I am not the one telling you you have to kill prisoners if you want to get out of here."

You know he is right.  But you aren't ready to give up so easily.  "So let me guess," you say sarcastically.  "If I do what you want me to do, you'll show me the way home, right?  So I'll have to do you're bidding if I want to get out of here."

"No," he says.  "I would be lying if I said that, and I won't lie to you.  I can't help you.  I can't get you home.  But I can tell you where the mirror is.  And I can ask you to help me--not because you have to, but because you will be helping someone who needs your help."

"The mirror?  What good is a mirror?" you ask.

He looks shocked.  "You--you don't know how to use mirrors?" he asks.  Your confused look answers the question for him.  "But you have the mark," he says pointing at the birthmark on your chest that is visible through your torn shirt.  "At this age, you surely should have been trained...  Have you ever started at a mirror for a long time, and felt it begin to change and open up to another place?"

"Yes," you say in surprise.  "That happened to me downstairs, but I thought it was just my mind wandering off.  You mean--you mean mirrors here are special and can take me other places?"

"Not only here.  And it isn't the mirrors that hold the power.  It is you.  These mirrors can't take you home.  But they can take you to different places here in Outland.  That is, if you have something that will connect you with another place.  You merely hold the object in your hand and concentrate on the mirror.  Your mind makes the connection that opens the door, and then you merely step through."

"I--I have these guitar picks," you say as you take them out of your pocket.  "Will these help?"

His eyes grow wide when he sees the autographed Mike Stone pick.  "Where did you get that?  That is my brother's prized possession.  You can get to him, and he may help you.  But he's...not himself lately.  You can get to him using the mirror in the interrogation room.  But you should go quickly.  There isn't much time," he says.

"What do you mean?  I've got the elevator stopped.  The guards can't come up here, if that's what you're worried about," you say.

"But that won't stop them from using the stairs," he says.

You:   :omg:  "Okay, let's go!"

"I cannot," he says.  "I have to stay here in this prison.  They have me in this tower because it dampens my power, and they are free to run their experiments.  That is why sound does not work outside and this place is being torn apart.  But me being here is all that keeps this place from being destroyed.  And if they completely ruin this place...many others will perish," he says, the look of sadness in his eyes returning.  "But you should go.  And go quickly!  But, please, I beg of you--take this to my brother," he says taking a necklace from his neck and holding it out to you.  It has a small prism pendant that seems to simultaneously be colorless and comprised of every color you have ever seen.

You hesitate for a moment, and then take the necklace.  "I'll--I'll do my best," you tell him.  You run back down the stairs and back to the elevator.  You remove the crowbar, and the elevator again begins descending on its own.  You hold 18.  When the elevator stops on 18, you press the hold button and again wedge the crowbar in place.  You use the hand to again gain access to the east corridor.  As you round the corner to the south corridor, you see the guard who killed the doctor blocking your path about halfway down the hall.  He sees you, too and begins running your direction.

You draw your gun, and the guard bellows, "What do you think you're going to do with that?" as he slams into you and begins to bear-hug you.  Unfortunately for you, all the wind is knocked out of you before you can answer.  Unfortunately for him, you are still able to squeeze off a round.  After a moment, his grip loosens and he slumps to the ground.  You continue running down the hallway.

As you pass the cell where you saw the old man, you see that the apparition is again in the cell.  "So you have chosen the path of light," he says.  "For what it's worth, I think you made the right choice.  Had you chosen a different path, things would be much different now.  Good luck!" he says as he again disappears.

You enter the interrogation room and stand in front of the mirror.  You pull the guitar pick out of your pocket and try to clear your mind as you stand in front of the mirror.  You feel foolish staring at your reflection waiting for something to happen.  But just as you are about to give up, you feel your mind begin to connect to something...  The best way to describe the sensation is as though you were falling and manage to grab onto a rope that then snaps taught.  Your image in the mirror begins to blur and then fade.  In it place, you see in the mirror a town square at twilight.  It is raining, and the dirt street is beginning to muddy.  For some reason other than the rain, people appear to be rushing to get inside.  Their clothing is from some time in the past, and you see no cars, machines, or anything else that looks more modern than a few hundred years ago.  The image in the mirror becomes so clear and sharp that you almost feel you can touch it, and instinctively, you reach out and try to do so.  Your hand passes completely through the mirror.  You gasp and draw it back, momentarily losing your concentration and causing the image to slightly fade.  You again clear your mind and bring the image back.  A townswoman rushes past and it appears the look on her face is one of fear.

You look in the mirror one last time trying to make up your mind.  You hold your breath and step through.  A man about ten feet away from you stares your direction with a startled look on his face and stutters, "How--how did you--?"  He calls out, "Tom!  Is the gate still open?"  You hear a voice in the distance.

"No, I locked it 'alf an hour ago!  An hour before sunset--you know that's the rule."  The man named Tom then rounds the corner from behind one of the cottages that lines the muddy street, and stops in his tracks as he sees you.  "Allo, who's this?" he asks.

The first man answers, "'E just appeared outta thin air.  Must be one o' them."

Tom's eyes grow as big as saucers, and he says in a whisper.  "Is 'e--Is 'e the bear?"

The first man answers, "If'n 'e was the bear, we'd prob'ly be dead right now.  But 'e's definitely one of 'em.  Gotta be, with magic like that."

As he speaks, you hear a third set of footsteps sloshing through the rain behind you.  But before you can turn, you feel a shooting pain along the back of your neck as you see stars and then lose consciousness...

=======================

You awaken some time later.  You are tied tightly to a chair.  The room around you is dark, lit only by a small lantern on a rough-looking wooden table next to Tom, who sits suspiciously looking at you and smoking a pipe.  You see your knapsack on the floor under the table.  Tom has a large, crude revolver in his lap.

You try starting a conversation.  "So...Tom, right?  What's going on here?"

Tom answers.  "I ain't s'posed to talk to you."

Ignoring the fact that he just did, you respond.  "Um...fair enough.  Then...what are you supposed to do?"

Tom:  "I'm s'posed to sit here an' keep an eye on you.  And when the moon comes out, if'n you start changin' into one of 'em, I'm s'posed to put a bullet in yer 'ead."

You:  "Tom, I can assure you, I have no plans of changing into anything other than little old me.  But if it's all the same to you, I'd like to thank you for your time and be on my way.  I don't suppose there's any chance of that, is there?"

Tom:  "Oh, no.  You wouldn' wanna go out there at night.  Not now.  They'll be out any minute now if'n they're not already.  You mus' not be from roun' here if'n you don' know that.  But we really shouldn' be talkin'."

You contemplate your next move as Tom sits there, sucking on his pipe.  You pose the question that has been on your mind since you woke up.  "Tom, what is this bear you were talking about before one of your buddies conked me on the head earlier?"

Tom's eyes grow wide, and then narrow.  "You really ain't from 'roun' here.  It's the count, who lives in the big place up the hill.  He ain't always a bear.  Only when the moon's full.  Then him an' his come out lookin' fer blood.  We're one o' the last villages left.  Tha's why we lock the gate afore sunset each night.  Tha's the only way I can explain it."

"Explain what?" you ask.

"The fact that we's still here, e'en though we da' closest village to him.  But we never know when dey come.  The moon done been up for more'n an hour already, an' all's quiet."

No sooner does Tom utter these words than you hear a shot fired not far away.  A moment later, another.  Then a scream.  Tom leaps to his feet.  "I'm--I'm goin' downstairs an' see what's goin' on," he says.

"Tom, wait.  Untie me first," you plead, but he disappears, slamming and locking the door behind him.  For the next half hour or so, you hear random shots, screams, scuffles, and other noises you aren't sure how to classify.  You think you hear something scratching at the outside of the door.  Then nothing but quiet.  You eventually determine Tom must have either forgotten about you or is otherwise occupied, so you being working on your bonds.  You free yourself and grab your knapsack.  When you try the door, it is locked.  "Great," you mumble to yourself.  The room is large, empty, and dark save the small slivers of moonlight coming in through the shuttered window.

Do you:

A)  Try breaking down the door
B)  Open the window and see if you can get out that way.

The wooden shutter is barred from the inside, so you open it.  You are on the second floor, but the drop to the dirt below is not long.  The street below is lit by a full moon that is high the sky.  You take a quick look around, feel no imminent danger, and drop to the street below.

The front door to the building you just left is to your right.  A sign next to it reads, "The Tack and Bridle Inne."  The door is halfway open, and you see the blood-covered legs of a man protruding from the doorway.  From where you stand, you cannot see the rest of him.  You turn and look over your shoulder and see the town gate about a block up the road.

You approach the door and push it open cautiously.  As you do, and moonlight bathes the entry way, you realize one of the reason you could not see the rest of the person whose legs were protruding out of the doorway is because it is missing.  Pools of blood are everywhere, making dark macabre shapes on the floor, including a pool of blood in the shape of a heart.  You can make out a few more bodies and an unlit lantern sitting up on the bar across the room, but the room is otherwise too dark to see much else.

You are startled to hear a faint groan from a dark corner on the other side of the room.

Do you:

A)  Go inside and explore
B)  Close the door and run for the gate

You make your way over to the bar and light the lantern, which allows you to better survey the room.  The body in the doorway looks like it was chewed in half.  You do not see the upper half anywhere.  There is another body with gigantic chunks of flesh ripped out of it.  But it is the third corpse that catches your eye.  It is somewhat humanoid, but more animal than man, and covered with black, matted fur.  It looks somewhat wolf-like, but its snout resembles that of a crocadile.  From the gunshot wounds in its chest, it is fairly obvious how this grotesque creature's battle ended.  As you stand studying the creature, you are startled by another groan just a few feet away.

You turn toward the sound and see another pair of legs behind an overturned table.  Stepping around the table, you see Tom lying on the floor breathing shallowly, clutching his side, which is mostly torn away and bleeding badly.

"Tom!  Here, let me help you," you say as you rush over to him."

"Jus'...jus' shoot me," he says.

"Shoot you?  Come on, don't talk like that.  We need to get you some help," you say as you look around desperately for something you can use to stop the bleeding.

"There's...there's no...help," he says.  "Only way is...go to the bear's house an' kill him.  Up on the hill.  It's the only way to stop 'em.  They just keep comin' 'til...nothin' left."

"You mean there are more of the things that did this?  I was hoping that dead one on the floor was the last one."

"My--my family...  Hiding in the caves in the hills.  They'll find 'em if we don'...stop him.  Go...please...but shoot me.  I know what happens next.  An' it's worse'n what I'm feelin' now.  Trus' me...do it.  You need to find it in yer heart to do this.  Go fin' yer heart...  Go fin' yer heart..."

His eyes look frantic, and you aren't sure exactly what he means, but you can also sense that he's got his wits about him and is not merely rambling on.  He holds his gun out to you.  "Please!" he pleads.  "Do--it.  Jus' shoot me an' take the res' of my ammo and go...fin' yer--" he starts coughing violently, spitting a lot of blood, and can't seem to stop long enough to say another word.

You take the gun from Tom, but your hand starts trembling and your eyes well up as you hold it out and start thinking about what you had planned to do.  "I don't know if I can just shoot you in cold blood, Tom.  I just don't know."  Tom summons what last bit of strength he has and lunges forward at you, squeezing your hand with both of his, and then slumping back to the floor as the "crack!" of the gunshot echos through the quiet room.  You take the remaining few bullets from his gun.

You turn and are preparing to walk out across the open countryside when the phone begins to ring.

Do you:

A)  Answer it.
B)  Ignore it and leave.

You answer the phone and hear the same familiar computerized voice on the other end, but it sounds almost frantic this time:  "Kevin, where are you?  Have you gotten into the penthouse yet?"

You pause for a moment and decide how best to lie to it.  "No.  No, not yet.  I...ran into some expected difficulties."

"Well, hurry!  You have to get up there and take him out now.  It may already be too late.  I'm tracking power signatures in places that just don't make sense.  Where exactly are you, anyway?"

You aren't sure how to answer without giving something away that could be dangerous to you, so you choose what sees like the next best option.  "Can you say that again?  You're breaking up a bit.  Oh, wait, I'm going through a tunnel."

Computer:  "Wait, you're--what?  Kevin, I--"

You disconnect quickly, shut the phone off, and put it in your pocket.  You set off down the narrow streets and out the gate.  You see the large manor up on the hill in the distance.  The twisting, turning route in between is paved by yellow stones.  You walk.

...

Some time later, you are in a dense, wooded area.  The full moon is lower in the sky now, and the sky itself is beginning to lighten on the horizon.  You stop for a moment to rest, sitting on the ground with your back against a large stone.  You hear a rustling in the bushes off the left side of the path.  The first time you hear it, you ignore it.  Then you hear it again, only louder and closer.

Do you:

A)  Ignore it
B)  Leave the path to check it out
C)  Run

You step off the road, and the moment you do so, you are struck with the sensation of reality somehow being bent around you.  It is a difficult sensation to process, almost as if the ground beneath you is moving rapidly while simultaneously not moving at all.  You don't like this sensation at all and turn to step back onto the road, only to find that the road is far off in the distance.  Feeling just a bit panicked and disoriented, you walk toward the road, and then begin running.  However, after a few minutes, you realize the road is not getting any closer.  This was a bad idea.  But there is no time to dwell further on the subject because the rustling in the bushes has returned.

You turn and stare at the creature that now stands looking back at you underneath the pale green moon.  It looks like the dead creature back at the Inne, and it looks angry.  Or possibly hungry.  You aren't really sure which.

You draw your gun and point it at the creature.  You are a bit surprised when it speaks to you and sounds somewhat human.  "Do you even know how to use that, boy?"  It then lifts its head and makes a sound that its somewhere between a howling and hysterical laughter.  It abruptly stops making the sound and slumps to the ground, blood spilling from the gaping hole in its head.

"Who's laughing now?" you say.  Clearly, what began as laughter so soon did turn to pain.  Suddenly, those hours at the pistol range with your grandfather don't seem like wasted time.  But your reverie is cut short by another rustling in the bushes about 30 yards to your left, and another just a little behind that.

You hold your gun out in front of you and wait.  You do not have to wait long.  A wolf creature suddenly bursts out of the bushes about 20 yards in front of you.  Then a second, just a bit behind it.  You hear a rustling in the bushes off to your left.  That probably means #3 at least.  For a high school kid, you're a pretty good marksman.  But with only 4 bullets in the chamber, you have little margin for error.  If only you had taken the time to reload...

Nothing seems like a good option right about now, but you give in to the panic rising in your and turn to run as fast as you can.  A wolf creature appears out nowhere right in front of you and crouches, ready to spring.  Before it can, you put a hole in its chest with your gun and it falls back with a yelp.  You try to hurdle over its body, but your foot catches, causing you to momentarily lose your balance.  The break in your stride is just enough for the closest wolf creature to close the gap.  It springs and you feel it slam into your shoulder, knocking you to the ground and sending your gun flying off into the bushes to your right.  Before it disengages and rolls away, the wolf creature scratches you pretty badly on your upper right arm with one of its claws.  Your upper right arm is scratched and bleeding and begins to burn.

You rise to your feet and look around you.  You are surrounded by three wolf creatures, who begin making their howling, laughing noise.  You draw your long knife.  One of the wolf creatures springs at you, aiming for your head and upper body.

You dodge to the right and reflexively lunge with the knife.  You hear a yelp as the knife sinks into the wolf creature.  The good news is that it doesn't get up.  The bad news is that you are now without your large knife.  The good news is that the hard thigk poking you in the ribs as you are sprawled out on the ground turns out to be your handgun, which you pick up and hold out in front of you as you rise to your feet.  The bad news is that you only have three bullets in the magazine and you count three wolf creatures that you can see, which are salivating as they close in closer and closer to you.

"I am ready," you say, more to calm yourself than to intimidate the wolf creatures.  They don't seem very intimidated.

You hear a roar behind you and to the left.  Out of your peripheral vision, you see a huge, dark shape emerge and rush your direction at the same time the wolf creature directly in front of you leaps at your head.

All in one motion, you dodge to the right, while starting to run and looking back over your shoulder.  The wolf creature and the huge shadow, which you can now see is a hulking, bear-like creature, slam into each other.  This is the last thing you see as you slam into a tree with such force it knocks you unconscious.

===========================

You awaken some time later with a splitting headache, tied to a chair.  What is it with this place and tying people to chairs, anyway.  You groan and struggle briefly, testing your bonds.  You look around the room and are startled to see the shadow of a large, bearded man sitting in the shadows across from you, watching you intently.  "You shouldn't be out in the forest after moon rise.  I thought you were one of the enemy's, at first, which is why I was going to let them kill you.  But you clearly aren't one of their assassins.  So why are you here?" he asks you as he leans forward, his face now illuminated by the light of the candle on the table next to him.

You take a moment to examine his features, which appear almost more animal than human.  Almost like those of a bear.  Your heart quickens with the realization that you are likely in the presence of the creature Tom warned you about, and are helpless to do anything about it.  Although you've never really been one to pray or talk to God, you now silently pray to him by candle light and try to figure out what to do next.

The man bellows at you, "I said, why are you here?"

Do you:

A)  Tell him the truth
B)  Make up a lie

You aren't really sure what to do.  You aren't really sure of anything anymore, actually.  On one hand, here you sit, frightened for your life.  On the other hand, you notice that your shoulder is cleaned and bandaged, and other than being tied to a chair, you're in relatively good shape.

"I--I really don't know," you tell him.  "I mean, I've just been trying to figure out as best I can what I should do since I got here, but, really, it's all been circumstance."  You begin to tell him your story since getting that envelope.  He listens quiety until you are finished.

"So they told you who I am," he says.

"The count," you say.  "The...bear."

"So, you know I'm the bear," he says.  He seems to get more upset, and his voice begins rising.  "Then you know...I haven't been myself.  They told you what I'm capable of doing!"  He circles around behind you, grabs the ropes with one hand and lifts you and the chair off the ground.  With his other hand, he grabs your knapsack.  "Come with me.  I need to show you some things," he says as he exits the room.  It is dark inside these castle walls, and the narrow corridors you walk through are lit only by the candle in the count's hand.  You then emerge into a large banquet room with a massive but elegant wooden table.  There is a large platter in the center of the table that looks big enough to serve...well...a person on.  There are also place settings, candelsticks, and other typical things.  He sets you down next to the table momentarily and leans close.  "You sit here for a moment," he says. "I'll be right back."  He then disappears through a door at the other end of the room.

B)  Wait

Before long, he returns, picks you back up, and sets off once again.  You soon arrive at a heavy oak door with a dark staircase leading downward.  Down the cellar stairs you disappear with your captor.  At the bottom of the stairs, he sets you down directly across from a large object that is covered wih a black shroud.  He takes a few steps back away from you.  "Now we find out if you are lying," he says with a wicked grin that reveals almost animal-looking sharp teeth.

You look around the room.  It is filled with large, empty cages and what look to be torture devices of various kinds.  There are dark stains on the stone floor that could be old blood.  You can only wonder what horrors lie beneath the shroud as he turns away from you, places his hand on the shroud, and prepares to draw it back.  Through all the jostling from being carried with your chair, you notice that he ropes holding you have loosened a bit.

"Stop!" you yell as loud as you can.  The count pauses and looks a bit confused and startled by your sudden outburst.  "Don't do it," you repeat.  "This has all been a misunderstanding.  I shouldn't even be here.  I don't want to die or be tortured.  Just let me go!"

"Sorry, but that's not how it is," he says.  "You certainly shouldn't be here.  But how you got here and why, I don't know."

"But I told you how and why I got here," you say.

"Yes.  And you might be lying.  I need to know for sure," he says as he turns back to the large, shrouded object."

"No!  Let me please explain!" you scream.

The count whips back around and snarls, his face about an inch from yours.  "I've had just about enough of your screaming," he says.  "If I were going to just kill you, I wouldn't have saved you from the wolves and wouldn't have fixed up your shoulder.  Or did you forget about your shoulder?  That scratch is pretty deep.  Next moonrise, you'll be just like them.  You know that, right?  I can't afford to have that happen, so I either need to send you away or kill you.  Problem is, I can't send you away."

"Why not?" you ask.

"Because I can't.  There's no way out that I know of other than the way you say you came in.  If you can use mirrors, show me."  He pulls back the shroud, and before you is a large, full-length mirror.  "Open the gate back to my brother.  I haven't seen or talked to him since we were banished.  And if they're doing what you said, he may not have much time left.  Show me."

You stare into the mirror and let your mind go blank.  At first, nothing happens.  Eventually, your image in the mirror begins to blur and change.  You see an image of the inside of a room that looks similar to the interior of one of the places in the town you first arrived at in this place.  There is a badly mutilated body on the floor, and a wolf creature suddenly wanders into the frame.  It turns to face you and looks momentarily startled before it snarls and crouches to spring in your direction.

You continue to focus on the mirror, not wanting to close the portal you have opened, despite the fact that the wolf on the other side also realizes a portal has been opened.  Bad move.  The wolf creature pounces through the mirror and lunges right at you, locking its jaws around your throat and knocking you to the floor.  The count roars and leaps at the wolf creature, which expires with a yelp and a sickening cracking sound as the count flings it against the far stone wall.  The last thing you see before you pass out is the count leaning over you with a look of mixed anger and concern.

You are...almost dead.

*********

You awaken some time later, unable to move.  After looking around, you realize you are tied to a bed.  Your neck, now bandaged up, hurts.  You see the count sitting in a chair not far from you.

"Awake, I see, and none too soon.  I wasn't half sure you'd make it, and I wasn't half sure I wanted you to," he says.  "That was either the weakest assassination attempt I've ever seen, or you just have no clue what you are doing.  What were you thinking opening up a portal to the storehouse next to the Inne right after it was attacked?"

You find you are able to talk, although only weakly.  "I...I don't know.  I'm not sure how to control it.  I've only done it once before.  From what your brother told me, I think I need to be touching something from the place I want to go to.  The only thing I was touching was the rope around my wrist, so I guess wherever that come from, that's where the portal opened to."

"I hadn't thought of that," he says.  "Maybe you weren't trying to kill me after all.  But you don't have much time to prove yourself to me.  The moon will be rising again soon.  You've been resting a long time.  And I'll kill you before the moon rises.  I can't have you changing on me."

"What do you want me to do?" you ask.

"Open the portal to my brother and let me talk to him," he says as he pushes another mirror closer to the bed.  "That's the only way I can be sure of what your intentions are.  I have something you can use.  But hurry.  There isn't much time."

The count hands you a Starbucks cup.  He answers your look of surprise before you can formulate your question.  "Dude, they're everywhere nowadays."  You shrug and take the cup.  As you do, you feel a warm pulsing over your chest.  You look down and do not see anything at first.  Then the pendant the Silent Man gave you appears out of nowhere, pulsing with a warm red glow.  The count stares in amazement.  "Where did you--?  You did kill him!  This has all been a trick!  I knew it!" he yells as he rushes toward you with a huge, jagged knife.

"Now wait a minute, man!" you reply.  "I didn't kill him, I swear!  He gave it to me and told me I would need it to help him.  Let me open the mirror and let him tell you himself!"  The Count pauses.  You repeat, "I didn't kill him!"  He slams the knife down on a nearby table, driving the blade completely through the thick wood.  You think to yourself that you are glad you are not the table.

"Proceed," he says calmly, motioning toward the mirror.  You eventually bring up the image of the Silent Man's chamber.  In your weakened condition, it just about exhausts you to open the mirror portal, but once it is open, you find it takes no effort at all to maintain it.  The Silent Man looks to you as if he has been beaten.  He and the Count talk to each other about things you know nothing about and are too tired to take in.  Part of their conversation is the Silent Man recounting how you agreed to help him and how he helped you get out of the tower.  They also get into an argument after a while that concerns you, but you cannot maintain the focus to take in what they are saying.

After a while, the Count turns back to you.  "You can close it now.  I don't think you have the strength to keep it open."  You allow the portal to close.  "I still don't completely trust you," he says.  "But I thank you for letting me talk to my brother and clarify some things.  You have to leave here quickly.  There isn't much time.  The moon is about to rise."  He then tosses your knapsack to you.  "I am inclined to send you on your way instead of killing you, but I have to ask you first.  I was told you might have something that belongs to me.  Is this true?"

Do you:

A)  Give him something (say what)

"Yes.  Yes, I think I do," you say.  You open the knapsack and begin looking throught it.  You cannot find the guitar picks, and you begin to panic.

The Count leans close to you and places a strong hand on your shoulder.  "I have them.  Even my treasure, my Mike Stone pick.  I had to test you and see whether you would give them to me.  I had to know more about your heart before trusting you with this," he says as he hands you a pendant like the one the Silent Man gave you.  "Now drink this," he says, taking your health drink out of your pack.  "Quickly.  We have only minutes before the moon rises.  And trust me, you don't want to be found smiling at the moon in your condition."

You drink the health drink and ask him the question that had been on your mind for a while.  "But what about the moon where I am going?"

"I don't think it works that way," he says.  "You have only become a slave to the moon in this place.  Now, use the mirror.  Quickly."

"Wait, aren't you going to help me?" you ask.

"There is not much more I can do.  But I am sending you to someone who can help," he says.

"Someone else?  Who?  Where am I going?" you ask.

The count smiles and says, "You're off to see the wizard.  But you'll need all your cunning to solve the riddles you'll find there where he is."

You think about it for a moment and say, "No.  I think I need to go back to the studio.  I--I can't explain why.  But I just feel I have to try to get to the bottom of what that machine was trying to do to me."

He responds, "I don't think that is a good idea.  You need to know what you're up against before you go back there.  Go and see the wizard first," he says.  You ponder his words and pace around the room.  As you glance out the nearby window, you see the smallest sliver of moon begin to peek over the hills.  You don't have much time to decide.

You take out the phone and look at it.  The bebot application catches your eye, but you don't have time to play with it right now.  You don't feel well and find yourself sweating, although you don't feel particularly warm.  You stand in front of the mirror and notice you do not look so good either.  You try to clear your mind and reach out toward the phone in your hand.  A place you do not recognize begins to coalesce in the mirror; a place with dark wood, a huge crystal chandelier, and plush red carpeting.  Involuntarily, your body begins to convulse, breaking your concentration.

"Quickly!" shouts the Count.  "It is beginning.  Try to focus!"

You feel excruciating pain in your limbs as if your very bones are cracking.  You turn back to the mirror, which is caught halfway between the image of this new place and your own reflection, which you realize is starting to resemble you less and less as your body begins to change.  You take a deep breath, ignore the pain, and refocus.  You close your eyes.  After a few moments, you hear the Count.  "Go now!  Your time is up.  He is probably hiding somewhere below, but if you look hard enough, you will find the keys to find him and he should be able to give you what you need.  Learn the tri-tone.  It may help.  Now go!"  You open your eyes and see the mirror open before you into this other place.  Your body again begins to convulse, causing the image to waver and causing you to drop to your knees.  You feel the Count's strong hands lift you up and push you toward the mirror.  But you also feel in your mind that the portal is closing and that it is too late.  Reflexively, you close your eyes and put up your hands to protect yourself.  You feel a brief resistance and hear glass shattering.  Then...you fall...

Thankfully, you have a soft landing.  You open your eyes to find yourself lying on the dark red carpet you saw in the mirror.  There are shards of glass on the floor all around you.  You get up and look around.  On the wall is what remains of a huge, ornately framed mirror that is now shattered.  You realize that is the mirror you must have come through.  But you won't be going back that way any time soon.  You see the chandelier.  The room is lavishly decorated and as you look around, you realize you appear to be in what looks like the lobby of a theater.  There are various posters of all kinds of entertainment acts, musical, dramatic, and otherwise, but none that you've ever heard of.  To the north are two doors.  The one to the left has an exit sign above it.  The one to the right has a sign on the door that says "Box Office - employees only."  To the south is a door with a sign that says "restrooms."  To the east are two doors into the theater auditorium.  There are also two staircases leading upstairs.  There's a room at the top of the stairs, but you don't feel particularly drawn to it.

Before doing anything, you reach down and pick up the phone, which you realize you must have dropped when you came through the mirror.  Now that you realize it belongs to the person you are here to see, you take a moment to look through it.  There are a lot of different apps.  The "to-do list" app is flashing, so you open it.  A couple of tasks pop up:  (1) rehearsal; (2) get tickets.  "Get tickets," you say to yourself.  "The world has apparently gone nuts, and the wizard's phone is reminding him to get tickets.  Weird."  You put the phone away.

But while you're thinking about it, you take the opportunity to reload the handgun.

You look down at your chest and notice the pendants again do not appear to be there, although you can sense that they are.  You were not aware they behaved this way prior to your incident with the Count.

You decide to head to the box office door.  It opens.  You go in and see a window to the west facing the entrance hallway.  There is a countertop along that same western wall.  There are drawers underneath it and some sorting bins off to the side.  There are various mail slots on the north wall, along with a bulletin board.  There is a desk along the east wall and several boxes stacked up next to it.  Next to the door on the wall next to you, you see a diagram of the theater taped to the wall, so you take it.

You look around the box office.  There is a lot of cool stuff, but nothing that really catches your eye until you look in the sorting bins on the countertop and see an envelope that is literally shaking.  You gingerly retrieve it from the slot and see an inscription on it that says, "open me."

A. [Edited] I know I might regret it later, but... It's a secret envelope!

Since it said "open me," it obviously disagrees with you.

You open the envelope and, staring down into the envelope, you find inside two tickets for section 101, row K, sets 10 and 11.  "Not bad seats," you say as you take the tickets.  You find nothing else of interest and go back outside.

D as well. I believe something will happen on the Auditorium so we should explore smaller areas first.

Wont you be embarrassed when the real show is actually in the bathroom? :eyebrows:

All I'm saying is...DT haven't released all the dates for their "one-off" shows yet...if ya' know what I mean.  :eyebrows:

**Note:  I realized that the version of the first floor theater map I uploaded did not have one of the changes I made, so I just uploaded the new version.  If you printed out the old one that was posted, take a look at the new one.  You probably don't need to print a new one unless you want to.  The only thing that is different is the restroom entrance area.  But you should definitely make sure to print it out if you haven't printed it yet.  I predict you will need to take good notes in this world.

You head south through the door marked "restrooms" and are caught somewhat off guard.  You are in what should be, according to the map, a short hallway, with the men's room door to the west and the women's room door to the east.  The doors are in the right directions, but are about 50 yards or so farther away than either the map or the laws of physics should allow.  The hallway walls are dark brown, but there is otherwise nothing unusual about these walls.  The hallway itself is dimly lit.  The floor is black and white checkered tile.  As with the rest of the theater you have seen so far, the hallway is dusty and does not look like it has been used in some time.  However, it is dimly lit from some light source you cannot see.  There is construction debris piled along the south wall, including some long boards.

You notice there is a large hole in the floor to the east that blocks your path in that direction.  As you look and try to think of whether or not you might be able to cross it, you feel a hand tap you on the shoulder.  As you turn and look, you see nothing, but here what sounds like a child's giggling and the sound of footsteps far down the hallway to the west.

Do you:

A)  Go to the men's room
B)  Examine the pit to the east
C)  Go back out into the lobby

Sorry guys.  I was gone for a while.

You begin walking toward the men's room.  As you do, you step on a black tile and are startled by the sound of a very loud, dissonant pipe organ note.  You jump back and the note immediately stops.  You look down and notice a cut on your left forearm that is bleeding slightly.  "How did that happen?" you wonder to yourself.  You notice you are standing on a white tile only.

Do you:

A)  Continue toward the men's room in the most direct manner possible.
B)  Continue toward the men's room, careful to only walk on white tiles
C)  Examine the pit to the east
D)  Go back out into the lobby

You carefully make your way to the men's room making sure to stay on the white tiles.  The room is dark, and the lights don't appear to work, so you prop the door open.  You look around in the dim light, but the only interesting thing you find is a pile of wadded up papers in the sink.  Given your curious nature, you can't help but look at them.  There are exactly twelve pieces of paper.  Nine of them are blank.  As for the other three:

The first has the following note:  "I really cannot decide who 'won'--the hive queen or the hegemon.  But I suppose it will be important that I eventually decide."

The second:  "Beware the phantoms!"

The third appears to be an instruction sheet that says:  "Hold in both hands.  For low light, whisper 'starlight.'  For medium light, whisper 'moonlight.'  For full illumination, whisper 'sunlight.'  Do not yell.  Orb may become irritable if you do.  Caution:  full illumination mode for extended periods may result in flare-ups or worse.  Contact technical support and local emergency room immediately if flareup should occur, but don't be frightened of the shadows it creates."

Ineresting...  You leave and go back out into the hallway.

You look down into the pit and can't see anything, even lying flat one the floor with your head partially down in the pit.  You extend your arm with the orb and whisper "moonlight."  Far down in the pit, you see movement, as if the entire floor is alive.  You haven't seen a snake in so long, you have practically forgotten how afraid of them you are.  But with the light the memories all rush into your head as you realize you cannot see the floor below for how many slithering serpents cover it.  "Snakes.  I hate snakes."

You shudder and put the orb back into your pack, then head back out into the lobby, confused and unsure why you would rather go out there than explore the women's room.

As you enter the lobby, you see what appears to be a small child standing in the middle of the lobby holding a ticket.  "Hey there!" you say.  The child spins around and appears startled.  You can tell this more by his body language than his face since the hood on the purple hoodie he is wearing casts a shadow over his face that prevents you from seeing his facial features.  He turns and darts through one of the doors into the auditorium.

*helps joo out*

You really want to get to those keys on the other side of the pit and explore the other restroom, and glance around, looking for ideas.  You spot the boards among the contruction debri along the south wall and use a pair of them to make a makeshift bridge across the pit.  It is a bit shaky, but you make it across without incident.  But you are a bit careless as you step off on the other side, causing the boards to shift...and the ends closest to you to fall into the pit.  "Not good," you say to yourself.  You take the keys and go into the restroom.

The light flickers, giving a strobe effect between light and complete darkness.  You look around while the lighting goes from light to dark, dark to light.  You see nothing helpful or unusual until you look into mirrors above the sinks as you are walking back toward the door.  You walk past the first mirror, and your reflection moves as you do.  You walk past the second mirror and are startled by the fact that your "reflection" is not walking, but is standing still, staring at you.  You stop and stare back.  Your reflection smiles and beckons you closer.  When you hesitate, it reaches forward, its hand emerging from the mirror, holding out a toy spinner from a child's game.  The reflection mouths words "Do you want to play?" although you can hear no sound.

You cautiously take the spinner.  It has six areas on it:

-Lose a turn
-Move ahead 3 spaces
-Move 1 space to the right
-Move 1 space to the left
-Move back 3 spaces
-Lose your life

The last one concerns you, and you decide you want no part of this "game," whatever it is.  Your reflection in the mirror stands there smiling at you and then mouths the words, "you go first.  Spin."  You shake your head and say, "No, thank you.  I don't want to play now."

The reflection's face grows angry, and the background behind it changes to crimson flames.  "You have to play the game now!  Spin!"

You start to back away, and the flames grow more intense as your reflection lunges out of the mirror at you.  You dodge to avoid it and accidentally drop the spinner.  It hits the ground and the pointer spins a bit.  The flickering light in the restroom seems to flicker more intensely for a moment and then leaves you in darkness for a second or two, wondering where the spinner stopped.  As the lights flicker back on, you see the spinner stopped on "Move back 3 spaces."  You glance at your reflection and see its expression change to one of mixed anger and surprise.  It mouths "No!" and lunges at you, but is too late.  Reality shifts around you and the room starts spinning.

You find yourself a moment later laying flat on your stomach on the tiles floor of the cooridor between the two restrooms, back on the other side of the pit.  The wood is stacked back where it was...

You enter the auditorium.  It is medium sized and decorated with ornately carved wood, gold trim, and antique lighting.  There is at least one balcony level directly above you.  There is also a huge chandelier hanging in the center of the auditorium.  As you are looking around, you see movement out of the corner of your eye and you turn just in time to see the child dart across the aisleway and disappear behind a row of seats.

As you start to follow, the lights dim to about half light and you hear slow, deliberate footsteps clicking on the hard wood of the stage.  A single spotlight shines down on a man in the center of the stage wearing a tuxedo and top hat.  His deep baritone voice booms out across the auditorium.  "Ladies and gentelmen, the show is about to begin.  Please take your seats and prepare yourselves for the amazing sights and sounds you are about to witness.  You will see things out of the ordinary; hear voices that seem twisted and strange.  If you should see phantoms during the show, which you surely will, do not be alarmed.  Most of them are quite harmless.  ...unless of course, you have taken something that belongs to them, in which case...be alarmed.  The show will begin in two minutes."

As the lights come back up, the man on stage literally vanishes into thin air.

A)  Leave the auditorium quickly

You approach the row of seats where you believe you saw the child disappear, but you can find no trace of him.  As you continue to look around, you begin hearing voices whispering around you, and you contantly believe you see masses of people moving out of the corner of your eye.  When you turn and try to look directly at them, you do not see anything, but they are constantly there just outside your vision.

You hear a voice over the PA announce:  "The show will begin in one minute.  Please take your seats immediately."

Out of the sea of whispering voices, you hear whispers from the back of the auditorium say something along the lines of, "There he is.  He took it from us."  You feel like you may be in danger.

I guess our lengthy time off deserves a lengthy post from me.  :)  Oh, and :lol @ the person who reported bosk's last post.

******************

You can't shake the uneasy feeling that grips you, and you begin briskly moving toward the door.  You cannot see anyone besides yourself, but feel a constant jostling, and try as you might, your progress toward the door is incredibly slow.  You are about halfway there when the house lights suddenly go off, plunging the entire auditorium into darkness.  The stage lights come up, and you are suddenly aware that the entire auditorium is full of people, most of whom are in their seats lookign toward the stage.  Staring at the door, you see...what appears to be another you standing by the door glaring menacingly at you.  The other you is flanked by two security guards who appear to be watching him carefully with worried looks in their faces.  You hear a loud "clack!" and then a voice booming from the stage:

"Sold! Your number, sir? Thank you.  Lot 663, then, ladies and gentlemen:  a poster for this house's production of 'Hannibal' by Chalumeau."

You turn and see the tudedoed man on stage.  His gaze suddenly meets yours and he momentarily freezes in place.  His face then changes from a smile to a look of irritation.  He rolls his eyes, throws his top hat to the stage, points at you and yells:

"YOU, sir!  What exactly do you think you are doing?"

You sheepishly point at yourself, and he answers.  "Yes.  Yes, of course, you.  And you in the back as well.  We're trying to put on a show here.  Take your seats!  NOW!" he shouts.  You look around the theater and see all eyes staring at you.  All you can think to yourself is, "oh, that this too solid flesh would melt...right into the floor."  You briefly contemplate your options.

Do you:

A)  Turn and run for the door
B)  Quickly find your seat

Clue:  Epic puzzle coming up.  As in Myung's world where it was fairly important to figure out that there was a Wizard of Oz theme, figuring out what the theme(s) of this world are, and whose world it is, will help you tremendously.

Yes, one of the themes for this level is fairly obvious, especially after the last post.  A couple others have not yet been developed much, but are about to be.  There will also be plenty of opportunities to die excruciating and/or comical deaths.  I will also say that you have obtained the most powerful artifact in this level, and it should make your job a lot easier if you don't lose it.

You put your head down and reach into your pack for the envelope containing the tickets.  You accidentally pull out the envelope given to you in the schoolyard back home instead and notice that instead of being hot, it is now quite cool to the touch and is open.  But you don't have time for that now, so you stuff it back in your pack and pull out the envelope with the tickets, and look for section 101, row K, seats 10 and 11.  You happen to glance up for a moment and notice the chandelier slightly quivering.

The man onstage dusts off his top hat, places it back on his head, and continues on with the show, although you are focused more on avoiding people's gazes and quickly finding your seat.  Before sitting down, you look back and see the other you arguing violently with the security guards, although you cannot hear what is being said.  You turn back to the stage.

"Lot 666, then: a chandelier in pieces.  Some of you may recall the strange affair of the--"

You then hear a shout from the back of the theater.

"No!  You're NOT bringing him back again!  This is MY show, and I get to choose what we act out!"

You turn and see that the other you has broken free of the security guards and is running down the aisle toward the stage with a determined look on his face, the security guards close behind.  He clears his throat, and says in a theatrical tone of voice, "Close your eyes, and begin to relax!  Take a deep breath, and let it out slowly."

The tuxedoed man glares at him, raises his voice, and continues on a bit louder, "A mystery never fully explained.  We are told, ladies and gentlemen, that this is the very chandelier which figures in the famous disaster."

The other man continues his monolgue as well, and the two are now talking over each other, quite loudly as the other you passes your aisle, still walking toward the stage.  "Our workshops have repaired it and wired parts of it for the new electric light, so that we may get a hint of how it may look when reassembled."

The other you:  "NO!  You're NOT going to bring him back out after we took so much pain to lock him up!"

You hear a rattling above you, and let out an involuntary gasp as you notice the chandelier shaking violently.  You must have been louder than you thought because several heads, including that of the other you, turn your direction.  The other you smiles crookedly, a smile you recognize from the bathroom mirror.  "You!" he snarls as he leaps at you.

From the stage:  "Perhaps we may frighten away the ghost of so many years ago with a little illumination, gentlemen?"

Do you:

A)  Draw your handgun and fire at the other you
B)  Jump out of his way
C)  Continue to watch the show and see what happens

*flips coin*

And the answer is...A

You have little time to think and simply react.  The situation before you unfolds seemingly in slow motion as several random events collide in haphazard fashion, seemingly like a random stream of consciousness.

From the stage, the opening scene of Hannibal suddenly blares as actors in festive costumes appear.  As loud as the singing from stage is, it is not enough to mask a loud cracking sound from overhead.  But you are presently occupied and fail to notice the massive chandelier swinging violently and breaking free from the ceiling.  You draw your gun and prepare to fire on your mirror image as you pounces, but you are slightly distracted by the very loud collective gasp of the rest of the audience, who are all looking up in fear and awe.  The distraction causes you to miss your target, and you are knocked to your back as his hands close around your throat.  You are on your back, with the other you kneeling on your chest throttling you.  However, this situation lasts only a moment or so.  Your last view is of the chandelier plummeting toward you.  It crushes you and the surrounding few rows as it crashes through the floor, tearing a gaping hole that leads to...something below.

You are dead.

***************************

Do you:

A)  Leave the auditorium quickly
B)  Continue looking for the child
C)  Find your seat

You begin making your way to your seat.  As you find your row, you find yourself jostled about as you try to get to your seat, as if there are people in their seats that you can't see.  If fact, you keep thinking you see people out of the corner of your eye, but when you look, they are gone.  You are about halfway there when the house lights suddenly go off, plunging the entire auditorium into darkness.

You look around the theater and see that it is suddenly full, and all eyes are staring at you as you stand there in the middle of your row.  All you can think to yourself is, "oh, that this too solid flesh would melt...right into the floor."

You find your seat, and the show continues.  "Lot 666, then: a chandelier in pieces.  Some of you may recall the strange affair of the--"

You then hear a shout from the back of the theater.

"No!  You're NOT bringing him back again!  This is MY show, and I get to choose what we act out!  I say we do the other show."

You turn and see...what appears to be you.  Actually, more like the reflection of you that you saw in the bathroom earlier.  He is running down the aisle toward the stage with a determined look on his face, the security guards close behind.  He clears his throat, and says in a theatrical tone of voice, "Close your eyes, and begin to relax!  Take a deep breath, and let it out slowly."

At the same time, the chandelier, which has now broken free from the ceiling, plummets toward the area you just vacated.  The other you never had a chance, as the chandelier crushes him and the surrounding few rows as it crashes through the floor, tearing a gaping hole that leads to...something below.

After you stop coughing and choking on the dust cloud kicked up by the chandelier, you take a look around.  The auditorium is deathly quiet and still, and is dimly lit only by the candles mounted every 10 feet or so down the side walls.

You approach the huge hold in the floor and look down.  Far below, you think you can vaguely make out the main part of the chandelier.  What lies below seems to be a vast, expansive space, but it is dark, and you cannot ascertain much more.  You hear a voice, and somehow know the voice is only inside your head:  "Come with me, and I will how you how deep the rabbit hole goes."

You back away from the hole.  As you turn and face the stage, you see the child up on the stage, standing and looking your direction.  Was it his voice you heard?  You call out to him, "Young child, won't you tell me why I'm here?"

The child giggles, turns and runs, and disappears behind the large, heavy stage backdrop.

Sorry for letting this go, guys.  Last week was a nightmare [to remember].  This week looks hectic as well, but I'll try to be more on top of it.  Okay, so...

You climb up on the now-deserted stage and then take a moment to stop and just gather your wits.  You glance back at the main part of the auditorium.  From here, you can see the second floor balcony.  At the back of the balcony, you think you can see movement in the control room, but cannot make out any details from this distance.  You stop and take a moment to think about the clues given to you thus far and how they will fit into this strange place.  You suddenly realize you are exhausted.  And yet, you know it is probably not safe to stop and rest here for too long.  Still awake, you continue to move along.

You duck behind the backdrop and see various props, including a large pipe organ and some other things.  You also see doors to the rooms shown on the east side of the theater map.  From north to south, the first room has a sign that says "Producer's/Stage Manager's office."  The second is not marked, but there is a huge 'X' painted across the door and door frame in red paint, or possibly blood.  Both doors to the large middle room are labeled "Props and Wardrobe."  The fourth room, "Dressing Room A," and the fifth, "Dressing Room B."

Do you:

A)  Exit the auditorium
B)  Enter the office
C)  Enter the unmarked room
D)  Enter the props/wardrobe room
E)  Enter dressing room A
F)  Enter dressing room B

(and before Splent asks, no, there is no option to enter any restroom, and, no, you will not see any naked people in either dressing room)

You try the door on the office.  "Locked!"  You try the keys you got from the box office, and...one fits.  You turn the key, walk through the...door, and enter the office cautiously.  There is a desk with a computer and two chairs. The computer screen has a screen saver (lol--who still uses those?) operating, but the monitor and keyboard are coated with a thick layer of dust and look like they haven't been used in ages.  There are also stacks of paper, a coat rack in the corner, and a waste basket filled with crumpled up wads of paper.

Do you:

A)  Check out the desk drawers
B)  Check out the computer

You try the top drawer on the desk.  It sticks, and your hand slips off the handle, so you get a better grip and try again.  The drawer jerks open and you lose your grip again and stumble backwards a step.  Good thing, too.  At that moment, as if released from a jack-in-the-box, one of those toy monkeys with the sinister eyes and clanging cymbals springs up out of the drawer.  (in case you have no idea what I'm talking about, one of these:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_73NU6OlNuw )  It swings one of the small cymbals at where your hand previously was, tearing a gash about a half inch deep into the hard wood.  This is not your little brother's toy monkey.  You take a split second to ponder your next move with respect to the monster you created by opening the drawer.

Do you:

A)  Fight (with what?)

A, with Monitor (squish him)

:lolpalm:  That…wasn’t really one of the options I had planned for you guys, but…okay, with the monitor it is then.

You regain your balance just in time as the monkey springs at you and swings one of his cymbals at your head.  You duck and lunge forward, arriving at the desk.  As you turn, you see the monkey hit the wall and start to roll towards you.  The first thing you can think of to drop on him and try to smash him with is the computer monitor on the desk.  Unfortunately, it is bolted to the desk and does not come loose.  Thoughts racing, it quickly occurs to you that perhaps the best way to fight this thing is with something that is actually in your inventory.  The thought is not in time to prevent the monkey from taking a swat at your foot and tearing a deep gash in your shoe, which, thanks to your thick shoes, results in only a minor yet painful cut on your foot.  Reflexively, you kick at the monkey, sending him flying into the far corner of the room into the waste basket.

At that moment, you notice that your moving the monitor caused the screen saver to turn off.  On screen, you see the following prompt.

>I can help.
>Hit ctrl+alt+lightning

No keyboard you’ve ever seen has a “lightning” key, but you notice this one has a key with a symbol that looks like a small lightning bolt.  You hear a rustling in the waste basket and realize you have little time to decide on your next move.

You turn back to the computer and your hand hovers over the keyboard for a few seconds as you contemplate your next move.  Your hesitation nearly costs you.  You hear a shrieking sound and see a quick movement out of the corner of your eye.  You lunge for the computer keyboard and hit the ctrl+alt+lightning keys and are momentarily blinded as a brilliant white light arcs from the computer screen and you feel something whiz by your ear.

As you blink away the bright spots, you see the monkey--or the charred remains of what is left of it--over against the wall.  The computer screen is now inviting you to talk.

You weight the options in your mind and decide that it can't hurt to see what the computer has to say.

You type:
>Okay.  I'm listening.

Computer:
>Good.  Things have changed.  Alliances have shifted in a very unexpected way.
>I can't get into all the details.  But it has been a dramatic turn of events since the camel left.

You:
>What do you mean?

Computer:
>I cannot get into all the details.  Unfortunately, you and I have run out of time. They're coming for you, Kevin. And I don't know what they're going to do.

You:
>Who's coming for me?

Computer:
>Stand up and see for yourself.

You are confused by the fact that you are standing up.  Before you can react, you see the "other you" fade through the wall in the southeast corner of the room.  And "you" don't look pleased at all.

Computer:
>Run, Kevin!  Don't check the other rooms!  Just get below the main level now!  You'll be safer there.  Find the wizard in the maze and tell him to send you here.  He will know what to do.

The other "you" looks somewhat weakened, but still very determined to do you harm.  It is only a few feet from you.

Do you:

A)  Continue talking to the computer
B)  Ignore it, rummage through the drawer, and leave
